In this paper, an improved dipole-moment model for characterizing near-field coupling and far-field radiation from an IC based on near-field scanning is proposed. An array of electric and magnetic ...dipole moments is used to reproduce the field distributions in a scanning plane above an IC. These dipole moments can then be used as noise sources for the IC. In order to ensure the accurate prediction of the near-field coupling from the IC, the regularization technique and the truncated singular-value decomposition method are investigated in this paper, together with the conventional least-squares method, to reconstruct the dipole moments from the near-field scanning data. A simple example is used to demonstrate the approach. The improved dipole-moment model is particularly useful for addressing radio-frequency interference issues where near-field noise coupling needs to be accurately analyzed.
Robust residual strength test methods are critical for assessing the validity of new repair techniques for restoring strength to damaged composite laminates. In this study, the strength of pristine, ...damaged and repaired solid laminate composite material has been investigated by performing four different mechanical tests. Impact damage was imparted to carbon fibre epoxy resin specimens using a drop tower instrument. Specimens were repaired using a novel resin injection technique employing a low viscosity adhesive as the repair resin. The compressive strength of specimens was determined using compression after impact (CAI) and large-scale CAI test methods. Tensile tests were performed to obtain tensile strength. Flexural strength was evaluated by four-point bend tests. The thoroughness of each test method in determining the success of the repair was investigated. This study demonstrates that the strength restoring capacity of a repair method is subject to the test method used to assess the residual strength. The four-point bend test was shown to be the best preliminary test method for screening repair techniques as it is not affected by loading anomalies. However, design criteria should always be considered when choosing a residual strength test method for assessing repair validity.
The sheathing-to-timber connection (STC) is a critical component of timber-framed shear walls. The STC provides the shear wall system with its racking resistance, while anchors and tiedowns provide ...resistance to sliding and overturning, respectively. Because building materials are exposed to weathering during construction, this study aims to quantify the influence of weathering on the structural performance of STCs. To achieve this aim, a total of 117 small-scale specimens were fabricated with 5 different sheathing types and 2 different timber species. Each specimen comprised 2 panels of sheathing connected to 2 short lengths of pine timber (90×35 mm cross-section), with a total of 16/2.8ϕ×30 mm (l) galvanised clouts at 45 mm spacings. Some specimens were tested under the EN 594 monotonic loading protocol and others were tested under the ISO 16670 cyclic loading protocol. Some specimens were exposed to the weather for a period of 6 months before being tested, while others were stored in an air-conditioned environment before being tested. The results show that weathering reduces the ultimate and yield capacity of STC connections by 3% and 5% on average, respectively; however, this result is not statistically significant for most sheathing types. The results varied, with some configurations having an ultimate capacity up to 16% higher and others having an ultimate capacity as much as 20% lower for weathered specimens compared to unweathered specimens. However, weathering reduces the stiffness of STCs by 61% and ductility by 50%, a statistically significant result. For most sheathing types, these findings do not support reductions to the design capacity of STCs that have been exposed to weathering.
I divide the general field of technology ethics into two distinct parts, the ethics of applied technology and the ethics of technology and society. The former is the subject of volumes, whereas the ...latter is just beginning to emerge. This essay aims to bring the ethics of technology and society, with its emphasis on issues of bias, injustice, and equity, into conversation with contemporary political theology, and as such uncover new possibilities for theological reflection. To do this, I discuss how current theological utilizations of the common good are insufficient to provide a unique voice to the many biases and injustices within modern technological systems unless they are properly couched in an interruptive mystical-political framework, as defined here by M. Shawn Copeland, through her use of Bernard Lonergan and Johann-Baptist Metz, and marked by forgiveness, reconciliation, witness, memory, and lament.
In this study, a novel resin injection repair procedure and rig have been developed that have several advantages over current repair methods including a relatively low curing temperature and the use ...of common laboratory equipment. Cyanoacrylates (CAs) have been chosen as the repair resin due to their very low viscosity. Impact damage was introduced to carbon fibre epoxy resin specimens using a drop tower instrument. An impact energy of 20J resulted in repeatable damage consisting of delaminations, matrix cracks and breakout where the plies close to the impacted surface were not fractured. Compression after impact testing was performed to evaluate the success of the repair procedure. Damaged specimens retained 45.1% of the ultimate compressive strength of pristine specimens. It was found that up to 92.4% of the compressive strength of pristine specimens was achieved by specimens repaired with a liquid CA using the developed repair procedure. Repaired specimens had similar damage tolerance to pristine specimens and displayed only minor decreases in compressive strength after fatigue loading.
Writing and Reviewing Papers for Medical Physics There is an art to writing a scientific paper so that it communicates accurately, succinctly, and comprehensively. Developing this art comes with ...experience, and sharing that experience with younger physicists is an obligation of senior scientists, especially those with editorial responsibilities for the journal. In this workshop, the preparation of a scientific manuscript will be dissected so participants can appreciate how each part is developed and then assembled into a complete paper. Then the review process for the paper will be discussed, including how to examine a paper and write an insightful and constructive review. Finally, we will consider the challenge of accommodating the concerns and recommendations of a reviewer in preparing a revision of the paper. A second feature of the workshop will be a discussion of the process of electronic submission of a paper for consideration by Medical Physics. The web‐based PeerX‐Press engine for manuscript submission and management will be examined, with attention to special features such as epaps and line‐referencing. Finally, new features of Medical Physics will be explained, such as Vision 20/20 manuscripts, Physics Letters and the standardized formatting of book reviews.

A procedure for the calibration and compensation of near-field scanning is described and demonstrated. Ultimately, the objective is to quantify the individual field components associated with ...electromagnetic interference (EMI) from high speed circuitry and devices. Specific examples of these methods are shown. The effects of compensation are small but noticeable when the uncompensated output signal from near field scanning is already a very good representation of the field being measured. In other cases, the improvement provided by compensation can be significant when the uncompensated output signal bears little resemblance to the underlying field.

Electromagnetic field coupling and radiation from a heat sink is a challenging issue in the electromagnetic compatibility design of high-speed circuits. In order to accurately predict the fields ...excited by a heat sink, an approach is proposed in this paper to include the equivalent excitation of the heat sink, which is described by some dipole moments constructed from the near-field scanning of the integrated circuit beneath the heat sink. With both the dipole moments and the passive heat-sink structure incorporated in a full-wave model, near-field coupling and far-field radiation can be estimated, and the heat-sink structure can be optimized for mitigating unintentional interferences. Two examples are used to validate and demonstrate the proposed approach.
