In this paper, we introduce the Shared Wireless Infostation Model (SWIM), which extends the Infostation model by incorporating information replication, storage, and diffusion into a mobile ad hoc ...network architecture with intermittent connectivity. SWIM is able to reduce the delay of packet delivery at the expense of increased storage at the network nodes. Furthermore, SWIM improves the overall capacity-delay tradeoff by only moderately increasing the storage requirements. This tradeoff is examined here in the context of a practical application-acquisition of telemetry data from radio-tagged whales. To reduce the storage requirements, without affecting the network delay, we propose and study a number of schemes for deletion of obsolete information from the network nodes. In particular, through the use of Markov chains, we compare the performance of five such storage deletion schemes, which, by increasing the computational complexity of the routing algorithm, mitigate the storage requirements. The results of our study will allow a network designer to implement such a system and to tune its performance in a delay-tolerant environment with intermittent connectivity, as to ensure with some chosen level of confidence that the information is successfully carried through the mobile network and delivered within some time period.
We have studied similar to 2100 early-type galaxies in the SDSS DR3 which have been detected by the GALEX Medium Imaging Survey (MIS), in the redshift range 0 < z < 0.11. Combining GALEX UV ...photometry with corollary optical data from the SDSS, we find that, at a 95% confidence level, at least similar to 30% of galaxies in this sample have UV to optical colors consistent with some recent star formation within the last Gyr. In particular, galaxies with an NUV - r color less than 5.5 are very likely to have experienced such recent star formation, taking into account the possibility of a contribution to NUV flux from the UV upturn phenomenon. We find quantitative agreement between the observations and the predictions of a semianalytical Lambda CDM hierarchical merger model and deduce that early-type galaxies in the redshift range 0 < z < 0.11 have similar to 1%-3% of their stellar mass in stars less than 1 Gyr old. The average age of this recently formed population is similar to 300-500 Myr. We also find that "monolithically" evolving galaxies, where recent star formation can be driven solely by recycled gas from stellar mass loss, cannot exhibit the blue colors (NUV - r < 5.5) seen in a significant fraction ( similar to 30%) of our observed sample.
Astroviruses (AstVs) are positive sense, single-stranded RNA viruses transmitted to a wide range of hosts via the fecal-oral route. The number of AstV-infected animal hosts has rapidly expanded in ...recent years with many more likely to be discovered because of the advances in viral surveillance and next generation sequencing. Yet no study to date has identified human AstV genotypes in animals, although diverse AstV genotypes similar to animal-origin viruses have been found in children with diarrhea and in one instance of encephalitis. Here we provide important new evidence that non-human primates (NHP) can harbor a wide variety of mammalian and avian AstV genotypes, including those only associated with human infection. Serological analyses confirmed that >25% of the NHP tested had antibodies to human AstVs. Further, we identified a recombinant AstV with parental relationships to known human AstVs. Phylogenetic analysis suggests AstVs in NHP are on average evolutionarily much closer to AstVs from other animals than are AstVs from bats, a frequently proposed reservoir. Our studies not only demonstrate that human astroviruses can be detected in NHP but also suggest that NHP are unique in their ability to support diverse AstV genotypes, further challenging the paradigm that astrovirus infection is species-specific.

A supermassive black hole in the nucleus of a galaxy will be revealed when a star passes close enough to be torn apart by tidal forces and a flare of radiation is emitted by the stream of stellar ...debris that plunges into the black hole. Since common active galactic nuclei have accreting black holes that can also produce flares, a convincing demonstration that a stellar tidal disruption has occurred generally begins with a "normal" galaxy that has no evidence of prior nuclear activity. Here we report a luminous UV flare from an elliptical galaxy at z = 0.37 in the Groth field of the GALEX Deep Imaging Survey that has no evidence of a Seyfert nucleus from optical spectroscopy and X-ray imaging obtained during the flare. Multiwavelength data collected at the time of the event, and for 2 years following, allow us to constrain, for the first time, the spectral energy distribution of a candidate tidal disruption flare from optical through X-rays. The luminosity and temperature of the radiation and the decay curve of the flare are in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions for the tidal disruption of a star, and provide the strongest empirical evidence for a stellar disruption event to date.
We analyze star formation (SF) as a function of stellar mass (M sub(*)) and redshift z in the All-Wavelength Extended Groth Strip International Survey. For 2905 field galaxies, complete to 10 ...super(10)(10 super(10.8)) M sub((.)) at z < 0.7(1), with Keck spectroscopic redshifts out to z = 1.1, we compile SF rates (SFRs) from emission lines, GALEX, and Spitzer MIPS 24 km photometry, optical-NIR M sub(*) measurements, and HST morphologies. Galaxies with reliable signs of SF form a distinct "main sequence" (MS), with a limited range of SFRs at a given M sub(*) and z (1 s c0.3 dex), and log(SFR) approximately proportional to log M sub(*). The range of log (SFR) remains constant to z > 1, while the MS as a whole moves to higher SFR as z increases. The range of the SFR along the MS constrains the amplitude of episodic variations of SF and the effect of mergers on the SFR. Typical galaxies spend 667%(95%) of their lifetime since z = 1 within a factor of 2(4) of their average SFR at a given M sub(*) and z. The dominant mode of the evolution of SF since z 6 1 is apparently a gradual decline of the average SFR in most individual galaxies, not a decreasing frequency of starburst episodes, or a decreasing factor by which SFRs are enhanced in starbursts. LIRGs at z 6 1 seem to mostly reflect the high SFR typical for massive galaxies at that epoch. The smooth MS may reflect that the same set of few physical processes governs SF prior to additional quenching processes. A gradual process like gas exhaustion may play a dominant role.
Analysis of environmental DNA (eDNA) enables the detection of species of interest from water and soil samples, typically using species-specific PCR. Here, we describe a method to characterize the ...biodiversity of a given environment by amplifying eDNA using primer pairs targeting a wide range of taxa and high-throughput sequencing for species identification. We tested this approach on 91 water samples of 40 mL collected along the Cuyahoga River (Ohio, USA). We amplified eDNA using 12 primer pairs targeting mammals, fish, amphibians, birds, bryophytes, arthropods, copepods, plants and several microorganism taxa and sequenced all PCR products simultaneously by high-throughput sequencing. Overall, we identified DNA sequences from 15 species of fish, 17 species of mammals, 8 species of birds, 15 species of arthropods, one turtle and one salamander. Interestingly, in addition to aquatic and semi-aquatic animals, we identified DNA from terrestrial species that live near the Cuyahoga River. We also identified DNA from one Asian carp species invasive to the Great Lakes but that had not been previously reported in the Cuyahoga River. Our study shows that analysis of eDNA extracted from small water samples using wide-range PCR amplification combined with high-throughput sequencing can provide a broad perspective on biological diversity.
HIV-infected infants develop broadly neutralizing plasma responses with more rapid kinetics than adults, suggesting the ontogeny of infant responses could better inform a path to achievable vaccine ...targets. Here we reconstruct the developmental lineage of BF520.1, an infant-derived HIV-specific broadly neutralizing antibody (bnAb), using computational methods developed specifically for this purpose. We find that the BF520.1 inferred naive precursor binds HIV Env. We also show that heterologous cross-clade neutralizing activity evolved in the infant within six months of infection and that, ultimately, only 2% SHM is needed to achieve the full breadth of the mature antibody. Mutagenesis and structural analyses reveal that, for this infant bnAb, substitutions in the kappa chain were critical for activity, particularly in CDRL1. Overall, the developmental pathway of this infant antibody includes features distinct from adult antibodies, including several that may be amenable to better vaccine responses.
Biomechanical deviations long (approx. 5years) after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction have not been quantified in males, despite their distinct risk profile as compared to females. These ...deviations can indicate altered joint loading during chronic, repetitive motions.
Cross-sectional study, comparing kinematic and kinetic variables between 15 male anterior cruciate ligament reconstructed patients and 15 healthy controls. During walking and running gait, measurements were taken of impact dynamics, knee and hip sagittal plane angles and moments, and knee varus angles and adduction moments.
Comparing affected limbs to control limbs, significantly lower maximum (P=0.001) and initial (P=0.003) loading rates were found during running, but not in walking. Hip angles were lower for affected limbs of patients compared to the control group (P=0.039) in walking, but not during running. Between-limb comparisons showed important differences in symmetry of the affected patients. Maximum force during running was higher in the unaffected limb (P=0.015), which was linked with a higher loading rate (P=0.008). Knee flexion angle was reduced by 2° on average for the affected limb during running (P=0.010), and both walking and running knee and hip moments showed differences. Knee varus angle showed a 1° difference during walking (P<0.001), but not during running. Knee adduction moment was significantly lower (more valgus) during both walking and running.
Male anterior cruciate ligament reconstructed patients demonstrate persistent, clinically important gait asymmetries and differences from healthy controls long after surgery in kinematics, kinetics, and impact biomechanics.

We present two luminous UV/optical flares from the nuclei of apparently inactive early-type galaxies at image and 0.33 that have the radiative properties of a flare from the tidal disruption of a ...star. In this paper we report the second candidate tidal disruption event discovery in the UV by the GALEX Deep Imaging Survey and present simultaneous optical light curves from the CFHTLS Deep Imaging Survey for both UV flares. The first few months of the UV/optical light curves are well fitted with the canonical image power-law decay predicted for emission from the fallback of debris from a tidally disrupted star. Chandra ACIS X-ray observations during the flares detect soft X-ray sources with image or image and place limits on hard X- ray emission from an underlying AGN down to image. Blackbody fits to the UV/optical spectral energy distributions of the flares indicate peak flare luminosities of image10 super(44)-10 super(45) ergs s super(-1). The temperature, luminosity, and light curves of both flares are in excellent agreement with emission from a tidally disrupted main-sequence star onto a central black hole of several times 10 super(7) M sub(image). The observed detection rate of our search over image2.9 deg super( 2) of GALEX Deep Imaging Survey data spanning from 2003 to 2007 is consistent with tidal disruption rates calculated from dynamical models, and we use these models to make predictions for the detection rates of the next generation of optical synoptic surveys.
