In this text we explain the choice of participant observation in a sociolinguistic part of our study of french slang and we compare qualitative and quantitative aspects of our work.
The slangs of Paris & Sarajevo are compared. Argots have developed differently in the two cities & have different functions. Interviews with Parisian & Sarajevan residents (N = 11 & 12, respectively, ...aged 15-59) yielded 797 & 899 slang terms, respectively. The two populations form slang by similar procedures, but in different proportions. In a qualitative approach, data were collected via an ethnographic method of the Chicago School; observers lived & worked in the field for extended periods & developed their hypotheses progressively. Strategies for eliciting argot data in an interview are noted. A quantitative approach involved classifying lexicon as new, old, or revived; correlations are observed between lexical & subject subgroups. Rationale for combining qualitative & quantitative methods is explained. Adapted from the source document
