Alkaline phosphatase was monitored in 17 mice with s.c.-implanted tumors to relate the total circulating alkaline phosphatase to the total number of tumor cells in each mouse. There was a ...semilogarithmic relationship between the alkaline phosphatase units and the number of tumor cells. A time-independent standard plot of alkaline phosphatase and the number of tumor cells was used to estimate the size of disseminated and localized tumors. In animals treated with cyclophosphamide, the alkaline phosphatase marker was used to monitor the regression and recurrence of the neoplasm in vivo.
To contribute more comprehensive information about the characteristics of asthma, this article analyzed patients served by the University of Alabama at Birmingham Comprehensive Asthma Program. Their ...physicians rated one fifth of these patients as having “severe” asthma with the remainder about equally divided between “moderate” and “mild.” One in two first received a diagnosis of asthma ten or more years previously. Common comorbidities were hypertension, obesity, rhinitis, bronchitis, sinusitis, and arthritis. One half had visited an emergency room or been hospitalized for asthma in the past year. Inhaled bronchodilators and continuous theophylline were the most commonly prescribed medications. Side effects, especially tachycardia and insomnia, were common and almost exclusively associated with theophylline or corticosteroid therapy. Spirometric assessment showed chronic airflow obstruction in those with more severe asthma. Prevalence of respiratory symptoms, intensity of medication regimen, incidence of side effects, and health care utilization increased as asthma severity increased.

Controversy exists as to the influence of age on the prognosis of patients with carcinoma of the cervix. We present a series of patients with International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics ...(FIGO) stage I squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix, who were treated at a single institution with uniform radiation technics or radical surgery. A multifactorial analysis showed that age above or below 40 was not of prognostic significance after adjusting for race, substage, and treatment. Equal five-year survival was obtained by either radiation therapy or radical surgery. Complications in patients treated with radiation therapy appeared to be more serious than those in the surgical group. Theoretical reasons are advanced to favor surgical management in younger patients.
The experience of the Southern Regional Trophoblastic Disease Center includes 222 patients who were referred from January 1972 to October 1977. The initial tissue diagnosis was hydatidiform mole in ...212 patients and choriocarcinoma in ten. There was spontaneous remission of 142 (69%) of the moles and one of the choriocarcinomas, and 77 patients developed persistent trophoblastic disease. Of these, 58 had no evidence of metastasis, and all achieved remission with single-drug therapy. Nineteen patients developed metastases; 13 were in the "good prognosis" category, and all achieved remission with single-drug therapy. Five (83%) of the six patients with metastases in the "poor prognosis" group achieved remission with triple chemotherapy; one died of her disease.
The relationship between alcohol consumption & suicide rate in the US was examined through analysis of statistical, census, & sales data on alcohol consumption, suicide rates, & demographic & ...socioeconomic factors, 1977-1988. Analysis revealed that suicide rates were stable, spirit consumption decreased, wine consumption increased, & beer consumption remained stable. States in the West had high suicide rates, & suicide was positively associated with consumption of beer &, to a lesser degree, with total alcohol consumption. Analysis by quartile of each alcoholic beverage's consumption pattern revealed a significant inverse relationship between suicide rate & both beer & total alcohol consumption at the lowest quartile & a significant positive relationship between suicide & beer & spirits consumption at the highest quartile. A study was undertaken to evaluate the utility of human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA screening and colposcopy in the management of women whose Papanicolaou smears demonstrated atypia less than dysplasia. ...Fifty patients whose initial Papanicolaou smears were interpreted as showing atypia less than dysplasia were evaluated for the presence of HPV 16 DNA in exfoliated cervicovaginal cells and for histologic findings on biopsy. Those 50 patients were compared to two groups of patients: one consisting of 124 patients with biopsy-documented cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and another of 112 patients with normal Papanicolaou smears. The presence of HPV 16 DNA was confirmed with Southern analysis in 46% of patients with atypical Papanicolaou smears, 46% with confirmed CIN and 11.6% with normal Papanicolaou smears. The 50 patients with atypical smears underwent colposcopically directed cervical biopsies, revealing the following results: 14 (28%) had normal histology, 29 (58%) had koilocytosis without dysplasia, and 7 (14%) had CIN. HPV 16 DNA was present in exfoliated cervicovaginal cells from a large percentage of patients from each category (50% of patients with normal histology, 41.2% with koilocytosis and 57% with CIN). HPV 16 DNA screening did not predict which patients with atypical smears had underlying CIN. Colposcopically directed biopsy remains the evaluation method of choice.
After standardization for age and menopausal status, the prevalence of estrogen receptor positivity among 88 White breast cancer patients was about .72 compared with a prevalence of about .54 among ...Black patients. The prevalence of progesterone receptor positivity was also higher among White than among Black patients, although the magnitude of the difference was smaller. These differences were unchanged after adjustment for tumor size and nodal and distant metastases in addition to age and menopausal status.
