Inventory robots produce accurate results while reducing costs. Such robots are specialized in navigating around store/warehouse facilities while reading radiofrequency identification (RFID) tags. ...However, commercial stores pose a serious challenge to navigation capabilities since these scenarios are likely to be modified relatively frequently. Current solutions involve having to re-map the modified layout and redesign the robots' routes. This means that a human operator must direct the robot through the target area, reducing the autonomy and scalability of these solutions. The main goals of this article are: first, assessing the feasibility of RFID-based exploration to enable autonomous mapping of inventory environments; and second, comparing the classical robotic navigation based on waypoints to the RFID-based navigation strategy. It will be shown that RFID-based strategies can be used to successfully build maps autonomously and obtain similar inventory accuracies when compared the current non-autonomous strategies.
Although previously considered entirely reversible, general anaesthesia is now being viewed as a potentially significant risk to cognitive performance at both extremes of age. A large body of ...preclinical as well as some retrospective clinical evidence suggest that exposure to general anaesthesia could be detrimental to cognitive development in young subjects, and might also contribute to accelerated cognitive decline in the elderly. A group of experts in anaesthetic neuropharmacology and neurotoxicity convened in Salzburg, Austria for the BJA Salzburg Seminar on Anaesthetic Neurotoxicity and Neuroplasticity. This focused workshop was sponsored by the British Journal of Anaesthesia to review and critically assess currently available evidence from animal and human studies, and to consider the direction of future research. It was concluded that mounting evidence from preclinical studies reveals general anaesthetics to be powerful modulators of neuronal development and function, which could contribute to detrimental behavioural outcomes. However, definitive clinical data remain elusive. Since general anaesthesia often cannot be avoided regardless of patient age, it is important to understand the complex mechanisms and effects involved in anaesthesia-induced neurotoxicity, and to develop strategies for avoiding or limiting potential brain injury through evidence-based approaches.
Anaesthetic-induced developmental neurotoxicity (AIDN) has been clearly established in laboratory animal models. The possibility of neurotoxicity during uneventful anaesthetic procedures in human ...neonates or infants has led to serious questions about the safety of paediatric anaesthesia. However, the applicability of animal data to clinical anaesthesia practice remains uncertain. The spectre of cerebral injury due to cerebral hypoperfusion, metabolic derangements, coexisting disease, and surgery itself further muddles the picture. Given the potential magnitude of the public health importance of this issue, the clinician should be cognisant of the literature and ongoing investigations on AIDN, and raise awareness of the risks of both surgery and anaesthesia.
The objective of this study was to examine the association between increased physical activity at the moment of timed artificial insemination (AI), detected by an automated activity monitor (AAM), ...and fertility outcomes. This paper also investigated factors affecting estrous expression in general. A total of 1,411 AI events from 1,040 lactating Holstein cows were recorded, averaging 1.3 ± 0.6 (±standard deviation) events per cow. Activity (measured as steps/h) was monitored continuously by a leg-mounted AAM located on the rear leg of the cow. Ovulation was synchronized by a timed AI protocol based on estradiol and progesterone. Ovarian ultrasonography was performed in all cows on d −11 (AI = d 0) and in a subset of cows on d 0 (n = 588) and d 7 (n = 819) to determine the presence of a corpus luteum and follicles. The body condition score (1 to 5 scale) was assessed on d 0 and a blood sample was collected for progesterone measurement on d 7. Using the AAM, an estrus event was determined when the relative increase (RI) in physical activity of the cow exceeded 100% of the baseline activity. The physical activity was classified as strong RI (≥300% RI), moderate RI (100–300% RI), or no estrus (<100% RI). Milk production was measured daily and averaged between d −11 and 0. Pregnancy was diagnosed at 32 and 60 d post-AI and pregnancy losses were calculated. The mean RI at estrus was 328.3 ± 132.1%. Cows with strong RI had greater pregnancy per AI than those with moderate RI and those that did not express estrus (35.1 vs. 27.3 vs. 6.2%). When including only cows that successfully ovulated after timed AI, those that displayed strong intensity RI still had greater pregnancy per AI than those with moderate intensity RI or those that did not express estrus (45.1 vs. 34.8 vs. 6.2%). Cows expressing strong RI at timed AI had greater ovulation rates compared with moderate RI and cows that did not express estrus (94.9 vs. 88.2 vs. 49.5%). Furthermore, pregnancy losses were reduced in cows with strong RI compared with cows expressing moderate RI (13.9 vs. 21.7%). Cows with a strong RI at estrus were more likely to have a corpus luteum at the beginning of the protocol and had greater concentration of progesterone 7 d post-AI. Multiparous cows expressed lower RI compared with primiparous cows. Cows with lower body condition score tended to have decreased RI at estrus. No correlation between estrous expression and pre-ovulatory follicle diameter was observed. Also, no correlation was observed between milk production at AI and RI. In conclusion, strong intensity RI of estrus events at timed AI was associated with improved ovulation rates and pregnancy per AI, and reduced pregnancy losses. These results provide further evidence that measurements of estrous expression can be used to predict fertility at the time of AI and possibly be used as a tool to assist decision making strategies of reproduction programs.
Ketamine-induced neuroapoptosis has been attributed to diverse stress-related mechanisms. Glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β) is a multifunctional kinase that is active in neuronal development and ...linked to neurodegenerative disorders. We hypothesized that ketamine would enhance GSK-3β-induced neuroapopotosis, and that lithium, an inhibitor of GSK-3β, would attenuate this response in vivo.
Protein levels of cleaved caspase-3, protein kinase B (AKT), GSK-3β, and cyclin D1 were measured in post-natal day 7 rat pups after 1.5, 3, 4.5, and 6 h exposure to ketamine. A cohort of rat pups was randomized to a 6 h exposure to ketamine with and without lithium. Neuroapoptosis was measured by cleaved caspase-3 and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end-labelling staining by immunohistochemistry. Protein levels of cleaved caspase-3 and -9 and the total and phosphorylated forms of AKT, GSK-3β, and cyclin D1 (cell cycle protein) were also measured.
Ketamine produced a duration-dependent increase in cleaved caspase-3 and cyclin D1, which corresponded to decreases in phosphorylated AKT and GSK-3β. Co-administration of lithium with ketamine attenuated this response.
Ketamine-induced neuroapoptosis is associated with a temporal decrease in GSK-3β phosphorylation, and simultaneous administration of lithium mitigated this response. These findings suggest that GSK-3β is activated during this ketamine-induced neuroapoptosis.
We present the results of a technological analysis of the Howiesons Poort and MSA III lithic artifacts from Cave 1A at Klasies River. We studied most of the debitage and retouched pieces from ...Deacon's excavations (about 3000 pieces) and all the cores and retouched pieces from three layers of Singer and Wymer excavations (640 pieces). Our analysis shows: (1) that HP blade production was based on the use of marginal percussion by soft stone hammer, as at Rose Cottage; (2) that impact scars at Klasies, Rose Cottage and Sibudu indicate that the backed pieces were hafted in two different ways; and (3) that the HP backed pieces were an innovative way of hafting spear tips but are not clear evidence of the invention of bows and arrows.
We document the gradual evolution of debitage techniques within the HP sequence with progressive abandonment of the HP technological style. Very similar trends occur in the upper part of the HP sequence at Rose Cottage. The similarity in temporal trends between sites separated by more than 600
km has significant implications for the disappearance of the HP industry. We suggest that the disappearance of the HP was not due to a phenomenon of population contraction and isolation that caused the collapse of social networks. The internal evolution and parallel process of change documented at Klasies and Rose Cottage speak against a collapse of social systems and are associated with evidence of environmental and subsistence changes at the transition MIS 4/3.
In this study, the main objective was to assess if long luteal phases could have other causes than pregnancy losses. We enrolled Holstein dairy cows ≥50 d in milk (DIM) from a commercial herd in ...Brazil from October 2016 to August 2017. All cows received an estradiol-based synchronization protocol, and, on the day of insemination (d 0), were randomly assigned either an artificial insemination (AI) or a placebo insemination (PBO) in a 3:1 ratio. An ultrasound was used to assess the presence of a CL on d17, 24, and 31, which, combined to the information from patches for the detection of estrus, was used to determine the length of the luteal phase following AI or PBO. Pregnancy was assessed by ultrasound on d 31 and cows that were pregnant were excluded from the analyses. The length of the estrous cycles was categorized as short (<17 d), normal (17–23 d), long (24–30 d), and very long (≥31 d). We compared the proportion of cows in each category between the AI and PBO groups using a cumulative ordinal mixed model. We define prolonged luteal phase as estrous cycles ≥24 d and tested its association with potential risk factors (parity, season, DIM, uterine size and position score, milk production, body condition score, and the presence of a corpus luteum (CL) at enrollment to the synchronization protocol) using mixed logistic regression models. Results are presented as odds ratio (OR) and 95% credible intervals (BCI). Data from 876 inseminations (AI: n = 616, PBO: n = 260) was collected. Overall, 12% of estrous cycles were short, 31% were normal, 19% were long, and 38% were very long. There was no difference in the odds of being in longer estrous cycle categories for the AI compared with the PBO group (OR = 0.92, 95% BCI = 0.76–1.10). Season and presence of a CL at enrollment were associated with prolonged luteal phase. In the AI group, there was a possible effect of early pregnancy losses on the lifespan of the CL, but not the PBO group, which led us to conclude that long and very long estrous cycles were not all caused by the embryonic loss. In fact, the high prevalence of cows with an extended CL lifespan in the present study suggests this could be an under- or miss-reported characteristic of high-producing lactating Holstein cows. This finding may have important repercussions in the understanding of the CL function physiology of lactating Holstein cows.
The General Anesthesia compared to Spinal anesthesia (GAS) study is a prospective randomized, controlled, multisite, trial designed to assess the influence of general anesthesia (GA) on ...neurodevelopment at 5 years of age. A secondary aim obtained from the blood pressure data of the GAS trial is to compare rates of intraoperative hypotension after anesthesia and to identify risk factors for intraoperative hypotension.
A total of 722 infants ≤60 weeks postmenstrual age undergoing inguinal herniorrhaphy were randomized to either bupivacaine regional anesthesia (RA) or sevoflurane GA. Exclusion criteria included risk factors for adverse neurodevelopmental outcome and infants born at <26 weeks of gestation. Moderate hypotension was defined as mean arterial pressure measurement of <35 mm Hg. Any hypotension was defined as mean arterial pressure of <45 mm Hg. Epochs were defined as 5-minute measurement periods. The primary outcome was any measured hypotension <35 mm Hg from start of anesthesia to leaving the operating room. This analysis is reported primarily as intention to treat (ITT) and secondarily as per protocol.
The relative risk of GA compared with RA predicting any measured hypotension of <35 mm Hg from the start of anesthesia to leaving the operating room was 2.8 (confidence interval CI, 2.0-4.1; P < .001) by ITT analysis and 4.5 (CI, 2.7-7.4, P < .001) as per protocol analysis. In the GA group, 87% and 49%, and in the RA group, 41% and 16%, exhibited any or moderate hypotension by ITT, respectively. In multivariable modeling, group assignment (GA versus RA), weight at the time of surgery, and minimal intraoperative temperature were risk factors for hypotension. Interventions for hypotension occurred more commonly in the GA group compared with the RA group (relative risk, 2.8, 95% CI, 1.7-4.4 by ITT).
RA reduces the incidence of hypotension and the chance of intervention to treat it compared with sevoflurane anesthesia in young infants undergoing inguinal hernia repair.
Introduction
Mental health disorders are considered a priority in health policies around the world. It is estimated that more than 900 million people worldwide have a mental disorder, in which ...stress-related disorders account for a high number of emergency department visits. The scientific literature has pointed out the importance of considering how gender and sex differences influence the clinical outcomes of people with mental illness, playing an important role in the clinical management of these patients.
Objectives
The aim of this report is to investigate the presence of gender differences in the care of psychiatric patients attending the emergency department (ED), taking into account the clinical characteristics, reasons for consultation and practices.
Methods
The study considered all episodes of patients who visited the ED during 2017 and who were assessed by the psychiatric department. Statistical analyses were performed using IBM SPSS Statistic software.
Results
During the 12 months period, a total of 3180 episodes were evaluated by the psychiatric department in the ED. Of them, 1723 were female (54,2%) and 1457 male. Regarding clinical data, there were found statistically significant differences with respect to the pharmacological prescription in the ED, specifically in the prescription of benzodiazepines, psychiatric diagnoses after discharge and the indication of hospital admission between women and men.
Conclusions
This study emphasizes the importance of considering the existence of gender differences in both the clinical presentation as well as in the care of psychiatric patients attending the ED. The analysis of these variables would help to improve the health care of psychiatric patients.
