Background/Aims
Fragment reattachment is a procedure that offers advantages, such as preservation of tooth structure and maintenance of color, shape, and translucency of the original tooth. The aim ...of this study was to analyze the reattachment techniques used to restore anterior teeth fractured by trauma.
Materials and Methods
The PubMed, LILACS, Web of Science, Cochrane, and Scopus databases were searched in October 2016, and the search was updated in February 2017. A search of the gray literature was performed in Google Scholar and OpenGrey. Reference lists of eligible studies were evaluated to identify additional studies. Two authors assessed studies for inclusion and extracted the data. In vitro studies that evaluated permanent human teeth fractured by trauma were included.
Results
Twenty‐one studies remained after screening. The bond strength between the fragment and the crown was evaluated in 119 experimental groups. Ten different techniques were evaluated as follows: no preparation, chamfer, bevel, anchors, overcontour, internal groove, no preparation associated with chamfer after reattachment, fragment dentin removal associated with chamfer after reattachment, bevel associated with overcontour, and groove associated with shoulder. Five different materials were used to reattach the fragment: bonding system, luting composite resin, flowable composite, microhybrid composite, and nanocomposite.
Conclusion
Fragment reattachment using a technique with no preparation and an adhesive system associated with an intermediate composite with good mechanical properties can restore part of the resistance of the fractured tooth.
Objectives
The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate in vivo the response of bone tissue to photobiomodulation when associated with texturized P(VDF-TrFE)/BT in calvaria defects of ...ovariectomized rats.
Materials and methods
Wistar Hannover rats were submitted to ovariectomy/control surgery. Calvaria bone defects of 5-mm diameter were performed after 90 days of ovariectomy. The animals were divided into OVX (without laser (L) and membrane), OVX + P(VDF-TrFE)/BT, OVX + P(VDF-TrFE)/BT + L, and OVX + PTFE + L. It was utilized a low-intensity gallium-aluminum-arsenide laser (GaAlAs) with 780-nm wavelength and 30-J/cm

energy density in 12 sessions (120 s). Thirty days after the bone defect the animals were euthanized for histological, microtomographic, and molecular evaluation. Quantitative analysis was analyzed by statistical software for
p
< 0.05.
Results
Histological parameters showed bone tissue formation at the borders of all group defects. The association of photobiomodulation and texturized P(VDF-TrFE)/BT was not synergistic and did not show significant changes in morphometric analysis and biomarkers gene expression. Nevertheless, texturized P(VDF-TrFE)/BT membrane enhanced bone repair regardless of the association with photobiomodulation therapy, with an increase of connectivity density when compared to the OVX + PTFE + L group. The association of photobiomodulation therapy and PTFE was synergistic, increasing the expression of
Runx2
,
Alp
,
Bsp
,
Bglap
,
Sp7
, and
Rankl
, even though not enough to reflect significance in the morphometric parameters.
Conclusions
The utilization of texturized P (VDF-TrFE)/BT, regardless of the association with photobiomodulation therapy, enhanced bone repair in an experimental model of osteoporosis.
Aluminum (Al) is a widespread metal in the environment, and is found in fresh or processed foods, household utensils, packaging, and medicines. In addition to its high toxicity, Al can also have ...estrogenic agonistic effects on target organs. Considering that the Al effects on the prostate are little known, the aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of aluminum chloride (AlCl3) subacute exposure on the morphophysiology of the male ventral prostate and the female prostate of adult gerbils. Furthermore, the glandular restoration capacity in face of the Al insults was evaluated in gerbils that were submitted to 30 days of recovery. Male and female gerbils were orally exposed to AlCl3 (10 mg/kg) for 30 consecutive days. The animals were euthanized 1 day (Al1D) or 30 days (Al30D) after the end of treatment. Prostates were dissected out and processed for structural, ultrastructural and immunohistochemical analyses. Male ventral prostates and female prostates of the Al1D group showed increased cell proliferation, glandular hyperplasia, increased secretory activity and greater androgen receptor immunoreactivity. In males, Al withdrawal (Al30D) allowed a partial recovery of the prostate, as the glandular secretory activity, and frequency of androgen receptor positive cells were similar to the control group. In females, the recuperation interval (Al30D) was not enough to restore the prostatic morphology, since the gland remained hyperplastic, proliferative, and with greater androgen and estrogen receptor immunoreactivity. These data alert to the importance of avoiding Al exposure, since this metal can have a harmful and prolonged action on the prostate.

The Anoplocephalidae family comprises a group of parasites that affect reptiles, birds, and mammals. Humans can be accidentally infected by ingesting contaminated mites. We present a case of human ...bertiellosis in Brazil. Our report reinforces the importance of correctly identifying the parasite to provide adequate treatment.
The aim of this study was to develop a phytocosmetic sunscreen emulsion with antioxidant effect, containing a blend of flavonoid-enriched plant extracts. In vitro sun protection factor, antioxidant ...activity, skin irritation, photostability, cutaneous permeation, and retention of flavonoids were evaluated. Thermodynamically stable emulsions were obtained and tested for sensorial analysis after loading the blend of extracts. The selected emulsion was stable when stored at low temperatures (5 °C), for which after 120 days the concentration of quercetin and rutin were above their limit of quantification, i.e., 2.8 ± 0.39 μg/mL and 30.39 ± 0.39 μg/mL, respectively. Spreadability, low rupture strength and adhesiveness were shown to be similar to a conventional topical product. Higher brittleness, pseudo-plastic, and viscoelastic behaviors were also recorded for the developed phytocosmetic sunscreen. The product presented a critical wavelength of 387.0 nm and ultraviolet rays A and B (UVA/UVB) rate of 0.78, confirming that the developed formulation shows capacity for UVA/UVB protection, protecting skin against damages caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Rutin was shown to permeate the skin barrier and was also quantified in the stratum corneum (3.27 ± 1.92 μg/mL) by tape stripping and retention test (114.68 ± 8.70 μg/mL). The developed flavonoid-enriched phytocosmetic was shown to be non-irritant to skin by an in vitro assay. Our results confirm the antioxidant activity, sun protection, and physical properties of the developed phytocosmetic for topical application.
Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS) is a rare genetic disorder that causes accelerated aging and a high risk of cardiovascular complications. However, the underlying mechanisms of cardiac ...complications of this syndrome are not fully understood. This study modeled HGPS using cardiomyocytes (CM) derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) derived from a patient with HGPS and characterized the biophysical, morphological, and molecular changes found in these CM compared to CM derived from a healthy donor. Electrophysiological recordings suggest that the HGPS-CM was functional and had normal electrophysiological properties. Electron tomography showed nuclear morphology alteration, and the 3D reconstruction of electron tomography images suggests structural abnormalities in HGPS-CM mitochondria, however, there was no difference in mitochondrial content as measured by Mitotracker. Immunofluorescence indicates nuclear morphological alteration and confirms the presence of Troponin T. Telomere length was measured using qRT-PCR, and no difference was found in the CM from HGPS when compared to the control. Proteomic analysis was carried out in a high-resolution system using Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The proteomics data show distinct group separations and protein expression differences between HGPS and control-CM, highlighting changes in ribosomal, TCA cycle, and amino acid biosynthesis, among other modifications. Our findings show that iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes from a Progeria Syndrome patient have significant changes in mitochondrial morphology and protein expression, implying novel mechanisms underlying premature cardiac aging.
Traumatic dental injuries (TDI) are most prevalent during adolescence and infancy, and they have an important impact on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). The aim of this study was to ...assess the effect of dental treatment and the severity of TDI on the OHRQoL of schoolchildren in public schools in Brazil.
This cross-sectional study evaluated schoolchildren aged 11 to 14 years in Brasilia, Brazil. The criteria used for the examinations were TDI-O'Brien criteria; Dental caries-DMFT criteria; and malocclusion-the Dental Aesthetic Index. The impact of oral health on the children's quality of life was assessed with the Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ
) that was completed by the children while on the school premises. Socio-demographic information was also collected from the parents. Statistical analysis was performed using non-parametric and association tests, as well as linear regression.
A total of 20.2% of the students had some TDI in their permanent anterior teeth; 20% of traumatized teeth were treated, and 80% were not treated. Sorting by severity, 75.1% of the schoolchildren had a TDI involving only the enamel, and 24.9% had a TDI extending beyond the enamel. Significant differences were observed between the severity of a TDI and the total scores of CPQ
(Kruskal-Wallis; p = 0.0026), emotional well-being (p = 0.0006), and social well-being (p = 0.0001) when the group with TDI extending beyond the enamel was compared with the other groups (control and with TDI involving only the enamel), even after adjustment for socio-demographic and clinical variables. For oral symptoms and functional limitation, no differences were observed among the groups.
Dental trauma and fractures extending beyond the enamel, treated or not, have a negative impact on the OHRQoL of schoolchildren, suggesting effects on self-perception and in the social and emotional spheres.

The year 2020 has generated profound changes in personal and working relations, and in dreams of millions of people worldwide. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency and content of ...nightmares during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil, evaluating its associations with sociodemographic, occupational, and clinical factors. Cross-sectional exploratory study, including 1,057 participants who responded to an online survey about mental violence and nightmares during the pandemic, between May 25 and June 1, 2020. A descriptive analysis of the results was done to obtain frequency tables. McNemar's non-parametric test was used to compare the frequency of nightmares before and after the pandemic, and logistic regression models, to identify factors most strongly associated with the pandemic nightmares. Participants were from 21 Brazilian states, with a mean age of 38 ± 14 years, and 78% women. Half of them (
n
= 529) reported at least one nightmare episode during the pandemic, and 32.9% (
n
= 348) described a pandemic content. There was nearly a 3-fold increase in the occurrence of nightmares “once a week or more” during the pandemic, 9% before vs. 25% after. Prior psychiatric care, suicidal ideation, sleep medication, increased pandemic alcohol consumption, perceiving high risk of contamination, being woman, and of younger age were factors associated with having nightmares during the pandemic. Prior psychiatric care, sleep medication, and age remained significant after excluding participants without nightmares and comparing between individuals with and without a pandemic content. We conclude the COVID-19 pandemic has affected people's dreams. The increase in the frequency of nightmares, their pandemic content, and association with previous conditions are a concerning public mental health issue and should be taken into consideration by authorities and policy makers.
Several pollutants can alter neonatal prostatic development predisposing this gland to diseases. The toxicity and endocrine disrupting potential of aluminum has been reported in many organs, but ...little is known about its effects on the prostate. This study aimed to evaluate the effects that aluminum neonatal exposure can cause in the male ventral prostate and in the female prostate of adult and senile gerbils. Male and female pups were treated orally with aluminum chloride (10 mg/kg) from the 1st to the 14th day life. After treatment, the animals were aged until they reached 90 days or 1 year of life. The prostate glands were dissected out and submitted to morphological, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural analyses. Ventral prostates of adult males showed moderate hyperplasia and increased epithelial proliferation not associated with androgen receptor (AR) deregulation. On the other hand, senile males showed intense prostatic hyperplasia, and increased cell proliferation and epithelial AR regulation. Additionally, at both ages, there was a reduction in the prostate secretory function. The morphological changes observed in the female prostate were like those found in males. However, in adult females, prostatic hyperplasia was accompanied by a lower regulation of AR and estrogen receptor alpha, while in senile females, intense hyperplastic growth was associated with an increase in estrogen receptor alpha and a reduction in stromal AR. These results demonstrate that aluminum chloride neonatal exposure alters the hormonal regulation of the male and female prostate, inducing tissue damage that occurs in adulthood and intensifies during aging.
•BPS caused endocrine disruption in the prostate of male and female gerbils.•BPS caused more pronounced prostate morphological changes than BPA.•BPS promoted up-regulation of the androgen and ...estrogen receptors in the prostate.
This study evaluated the effects of BPS (40 μg/kg/day, during 28 consecutive days) on the male ventral prostate and female prostate of adult gerbils. For comparative purposes, gerbils were also exposed to BPA under the same experimental conditions. The prostates were submitted to biometric, morphometric, histopathological, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural analyses. The results demonstrated that exposure to both types of bisphenol caused no changes in testosterone or estradiol serum levels. Morphologically, the effects of BPS and BPA on female prostates were similar and included changes in prostatic tissue compartments, glandular hyperplasia, AR and ERα up-regulation and increased cell proliferation. In males, BPS and BPA promoted differential effects, since the prostate presented morphological changes and proliferative disorders that were more pronounced in the BPS group. Therefore, this study demonstrates that BPS caused endocrine disruption in the prostate of male and female gerbils.
