Mesh segmentation has become an important component in many applications in computer graphics. In the last several years, many algorithms have been proposed in this growing area, offering a diversity ...of methods and various evaluation criteria. This paper provides a comparative study of some of the latest algorithms and results, along several axes. We evaluate only algorithms whose code is available to us, and thus it is not a comprehensive study. Yet, it sheds some light on the vital properties of the methods and on the challenges that future algorithms should face
Decompressive craniotomy is a neurosurical technique known since the origin of neurosurgery, but its use as a routine started at the end of the 19th century. In last decades, the use of decompressive ...craniotomy decreased, mainly because of poor results obtained and the advances in medical treatment of refractory intracranial hypertension in the Intensive Care Units. Nevertheless, in recent years there has been a renewed interest with the use of this surgical techique in young patients with head injuries and severe intracranial hypertensio'n, but no surgical mass lesion, as well as in patients with ischemic stroke causing life threatening mass effect. The authors present a series of four young patients with head injuries and "malignant" intracranial hypertension on whom wide craniotomies were performed with an excellent outcome. The literature is reviewed.

The distribution of cytopathic and noncytopathic biotypes of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) in the tissues of ...colostrum-fed and colostrum-deprived calves was investigated. Colostrum-fed (group A) and colostrum-deprived (group B) calves were experimentally infected with the BVDV isolate 80/1, which contains both BVDV biotypes. Colostrum-deprived calves were also experimentally infected with a noncytopathic BVDV (group C) or with a cytopathic BVDV (group D) cloned from the 80/1 isolate. All calves were sequentially euthanized, and a wide range of tissue samples were processed for immunofluorescent and virus isolation studies. In group A, consistent immunofluorescent staining for BVDV was detected in vascular smooth muscle of numerous blood vessels in the tissues examined, mainly at 11 and 13 days postinoculation. A predominance of samples containing cytopathic BVDV was observed in the calves of this group, following virus isolation studies. Both cytopathic and noncytopathic BVDV were detected/recovered from a larger range of specimens in the calves in group B than from the calves in group A. In the calves in all the experimental groups, large amounts of BVDV antigen were detected mainly in tissue samples from the lymphoid and gastrointestinal systems, whereas only minimal amounts of BVDV were detected in the respiratory tract. Abundant noncytopathic BVDV antigen was also detected in pituitary gland and in Langerhans islets in pancreases of colostrum-deprived calves infected with the cloned noncytopathic BVDV. Noncytopathic BVDV was isolated from a wider range of tissues from calves in group C than in the colostrum-deprived calves infected with both BVDV biotypes. A cytopathic BVDV was isolated/detected in retropharyngeal, mesenteric, and abomasal lymph nodes and in thymus of 2 calves in group C. Cytopathic BVDV was detected/isolated mainly from mesenteric lymph nodes and Peyer's patches of the calves in group D.
ABSTRACT
Background:
The spectrum of severe and protracted diarrhea (SPD), previously defined as intractable diarrhea, has changed during the past several decades. Despite recent advances in ...determining the cause of SPD and in treatment, this syndrome still represents a challenge and is becoming a major problem affecting health care resources. This study was conducted to characterize the epidemiology, spectrum of causes, and the outcome of SPD in Italy in recent years.
Methods:
All the SPD cases seen at the major centers of pediatric gastroenterology in Italy during a 3‐year period (1993‐1996) were recruited in this multicenter, prospective survey.
Results:
Thirty‐two children (26 boys and 6 girls; median age at the onset of SPD, 40 days) were enrolled in this study by 9 of 26 participating centers. Twelve were newly diagnosed cases, with an estimated SPD incidence rate in Italy of 0.64 to 0.92 × 10‐5 infants per year. The most common causes were autoimmune enteropathy (n = 8) and ultrastructural abnormalities of the enterocyte (n = 7), whereas food intolerance and postenteritis syndrome were less frequent (3 and 2 cases, respectively). Two children with autoimmune enteropathy fulfilled the criteria for the X‐linked variant of this condition. At the end of the study period, 9 of 31 patients had recovered, 15 still had diarrhea, and 7 had died.
Conclusions:
Severe and protracted diarrhea is a rare but challenging problem in Italy. Because parenteral nutrition or intestinal transplantation are the only options in a subset of cases (e.g., ultrastructural abnormalities of the enterocyte), infants with SPD should be referred to specialized centers where advanced diagnostic and therapeutic facilities are available.
