ABSTRACT We report the γ-ray detection of a young radio galaxy, PKS 1718−649, belonging to the class of compact symmetric objects (CSOs), with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the Fermi ...satellite. The third Fermi Gamma-ray LAT catalog (3FGL) includes an unassociated γ-ray source, 3FGL J1728.0−6446, located close to PKS 1718−649. Using the latest Pass 8 calibration, we confirm that the best-fit 1 position of the γ-ray source is compatible with the radio location of PKS 1718−649. Cross-matching of the γ-ray source position with the positions of blazar sources from several catalogs yields negative results. Thus, we conclude that PKS 1718−649 is the most likely counterpart to the unassociated LAT source. We obtain a detection test statistics TS ∼ 36 (>5 ) with a best-fit photon spectral index Γ = 2.9 0.3 and a 0.1-100 GeV photon flux density F0.1−100 GeV = (11.5 0.3) × 10−9 ph cm−2 s−1. We argue that the linear size (∼2 pc), the kinematic age (∼100 years), and the source distance (z = 0.014) make PKS 1718−649 an ideal candidate for γ-ray detection in the framework of the model proposing that the most compact and the youngest CSOs can efficiently produce GeV radiation via inverse-Compton scattering of the ambient photon fields by the radio lobe non-thermal electrons. Thus, our detection of the source in γ-rays establishes young radio galaxies as a distinct class of extragalactic high-energy emitters and yields a unique insight on the physical conditions in compact radio lobes interacting with the interstellar medium of the host galaxy.
Abstract
Hot spots observed at the edges of extended radio lobes in high-power radio galaxies and quasars mark the position of mildly relativistic termination shock, where the jet bulk kinetic energy ...is converted to the internal energy of the jet particles. These are the only astrophysical systems where mildly relativistic shocks can be directly resolved at various wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum. The western hot spot in the radio galaxy Pictor A is an exceptionally good target in this respect, due to the combination of its angular size and high surface brightness. In our previous work, after a careful Chandra image deconvolution, we resolved this hot spot into a disk-like feature perpendicular to the jet axis, and identified it as the front of the jet termination shock. We argued for a synchrotron origin of the observed X-ray photons, which implied electron energies reaching at least 10–100 TeV at the shock front. Here, we present a follow-up on that analysis, proposing, in particular, a novel method for constraining the shape of the X-ray continuum emission with subarcsecond resolution. The method is based on a Chandra hardness map analysis, using separately deconvolved maps in the soft and hard X-ray bands. In this way, we have found there is a systematic, yet statistically significant gradient in the hardness ratio across the shock, such that the implied electron energy index ranges from
s
≤ 2.2 at the shock front to
s
> 2.7 in the near downstream. We discuss the implications of the obtained results for a general understanding of particle acceleration at mildly relativistic shocks.
A leading explanation for the origin of Galactic cosmic rays is acceleration at high-Mach number shock waves in the collisionless plasma surrounding young supernova remnants. Evidence for this is ...provided by multi-wavelength non-thermal emission thought to be associated with ultrarelativistic electrons at these shocks. However, the dependence of the electron acceleration process on the orientation of the upstream magnetic field with respect to the local normal to the shock front (quasi-parallel/quasi-perpendicular) is debated. Cassini spacecraft observations at Saturn's bow shock have revealed examples of electron acceleration under quasi-perpendicular conditions, and the first in situ evidence of electron acceleration at a quasi-parallel shock. Here we use Cassini data to make the first comparison between energy spectra of locally accelerated electrons under these differing upstream magnetic field regimes. We present data taken during a quasi-perpendicular shock crossing on 2008 March 8 and during a quasi-parallel shock crossing on 2007 February 3, highlighting that both were associated with electron acceleration to at least MeV energies. The magnetic signature of the quasi-perpendicular crossing has a relatively sharp upstream-downstream transition, and energetic electrons were detected close to the transition and immediately downstream. The magnetic transition at the quasi-parallel crossing is less clear, energetic electrons were encountered upstream and downstream, and the electron energy spectrum is harder above ∼100 keV. We discuss whether the acceleration is consistent with diffusive shock acceleration theory in each case, and suggest that the quasi-parallel spectral break is due to an energy-dependent interaction between the electrons and short, large-amplitude magnetic structures.
We report on a recent multiband optical photometric and polarimetric observational campaign of the blazar OJ 287 that was carried out during 2016 September-2017 December. We employed nine telescopes ...in Bulgaria, China, Georgia, Japan, Serbia, Spain, and the United States. We collected over 1800 photometric image frames in BVRI bands and over 100 polarimetric measurements over ∼175 nights. In 11 nights with many quasi-simultaneous multiband (V, R, I) observations, we did not detect any genuine intraday variability in flux or color. On longer timescales, multiple flaring events were seen. Large changes in color with respect to time and in a color-magnitude diagram were seen, and while only a weak systematic variability trend was noticed in color with respect to time, the color-magnitude diagram shows a bluer-when-brighter trend. Large changes in the degree of polarization and substantial swings in the polarization angle were detected. The fractional Stokes parameters of the polarization showed a systematic trend with time in the beginning of these observations, followed by chaotic changes and then an apparently systematic variation at the end. These polarization changes coincide with the detection and duration of the source at very high energies as seen by VERITAS. The spectral index shows a systematic variation with time and V-band magnitude. We briefly discuss possible physical mechanisms that could explain the observed flux, color, polarization, and spectral variability.
Context. Radio galaxies classified as X-shaped/winged, are characterised by two pairs of extended and misaligned lobes, which suggest a rapid realignment of the jet axis, for which a potential cause ...(including binary supermassive black holes, a black hole merger, or a Lense-Thirring precession) is still under debate. Aims. Here we analyse the complex radio structure of 3C 293 winged source hosted by the post-merger galaxy UGC 8782, which uniquely displays a significant asymmetry between the sizes (and therefore the ages) of the two pairs of lobes, indicating that an episode of jet realignment took place only very recently. This allows us to tightly constrain the corresponding timescales, and therefore to discriminate between different models proposed for the formation of X-shaped radio galaxies in general. Methods. Based on all the available and carefully re-analysed radio data for 3C 293, we have performed a detailed spectral modelling for the older and younger lobes in the system, using the existing evolutionary DYNAGE algorithm. In this way we derived the lobes’ ages and jet energetics, which we then compared to the accretion power in the source. Results. We found that the 200 kpc-scale outer lobes of 3C 293 are ~ 60 Myr old and, until very recently, have been supplied with fresh electrons and magnetic field by the jets, i.e., jet activity related to the formation of the outer lobes ceased within the last Myr. Meanwhile, the inner 4 kpc-scale lobes, tilted by ~ 40° with respect to the outer ones, are only about ~ 0.3 Myr old. Interestingly, the best model fits also return identical values of the jet power supplying the outer and the inner structures. This power, moreover, is of the order of the maximum kinetic luminosity of a Blandford-Znajek jet for a given black hole mass and accretion rate, but only in the case of relatively low values of a black hole spin, a ~ 0.2. Conclusions. The derived jet energetics and timescales, along with the presence of two optical nuclei in UGC 8782, all provide a strong support to the Lense-Thirring precession model in which the supermassive black hole spin, and therefore the jet axis, flips rapidly owing to the interactions with the tilted accretion disk in a new tidal interaction episode of the merging process. We further speculate that, in general, X-shape radio morphology forms in post-merger systems that are rich in cold molecular gas, and only host slowly spinning supermassive black holes.
Here we report on the detailed analysis of the gamma -ray light curve of a luminous blazar PKS 1510?089 observed in the GeV range with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the Fermi satellite ...during the period 2011 September-December. By investigating the properties of the detected three major flares with the shortest possible time binning allowed by the photon statistics, we find a variety of temporal characteristics and variability patterns. This includes a clearly asymmetric profile (with a faster flux rise and a slower decay) of the flare resolved on sub-daily timescales, a superposition of many short uncorrelated flaring events forming the apparently coherent longer-duration outburst, and a huge single isolated outburst unresolved down to the timescale of 3 hr. In the latter case we estimate the corresponding gamma -ray flux doubling timescale to be below 1 hr, which is extreme and never previously reported for any active galaxy in the GeV range. The other unique finding is that the total power released during the studied rapid and high-amplitude flares constitutes the bulk of the power radiatively dissipated in the source and a significant fraction of the total kinetic luminosity of the underlying relativistic outflow. Our analysis allows us to access directly the characteristic timescales involved in shaping the energy dissipation processes in the source, and to provide constraints on the location and the structure of the blazar emission zone in PKS 1510?089.
We present a systematic analysis of the mid-infrared (MIR) properties of the youngest radio galaxies, based on low-resolution data provided by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer and IRAS ...satellites. We restrict our analysis to sources with available X-ray data that constitute the earliest phase of radio galaxy evolution, i.e., those classified as gigahertz-peaked spectrum and/or compact symmetric objects. In our sample of 29 objects, we find that the host galaxies are predominantly red/yellow ellipticals, with some of them displaying distorted morphology. We find a variety of MIR colors and observe that the sources in which the MIR emission is dominated by the ISM component uniformly populate the region occupied by galaxies with a wide range of pronounced (≥0.5M yr−1) star formation activity. We compare the MIR color distribution in our sample to that in the general population of local active galactic nuclei (AGNs), in the population of evolved FR II radio galaxies, and also in the population of radio galaxies with recurrent jet activity. We conclude that the triggering of radio jets in AGNs does not differentiate between elliptical hosts with substantially different fractions of young stars; instead, there is a relationship between the jet duty cycle and the ongoing star formation. The distribution of the subsample of our sources with z < 0.4 on the low-resolution MIR versus absorption-corrected X-ray luminosity plane is consistent with the distribution of a sample of local AGNs. Finally, we comment on the star formation rates of the two γ-ray-detected sources in our sample, 1146+596 and 1718-649.
Abstract
We present an analysis of the mid-infrared spectra, obtained from the Spitzer Space Telescope, of the dark globule DC 314.8–5.1, which is at the onset of low-mass star formation. The target ...has a serendipitous association with a B-type field star that illuminates a reflection nebula in the cloud. We focus on the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features prevalent throughout the mid-infrared range. The analysis of the spectra with the PAHFIT software as well as with the pypahdb package shows that (i) the intensities of PAH features decrease over distance from the ionizing star toward the cloud center, with some however showing a saturation at larger distances; (ii) the relative intensities of the 6.2 and 8.6 features with respect to the 11.2
μ
m feature remain high throughout the globule, suggesting a higher cation-to-neutral PAH ratio of the order of unity; the breakdown from pypahdb confirms a high ionized fraction within the cloud; (iii) the pypahdb results display a decrease in large-PAH fraction with increased distance from HD 130079, as well as a statistically significant correlation between the large-size fraction and the ionized fraction across the globule; (iv) the 7.7 PAH feature displays a peak nearer to 7.8
μ
m, suggesting a chemically processed PAH population with a small fraction of UV-processed PAHs; and (v) the H
2
S(0) line is detected at larger distances from the ionizing star. All in all, our results suggest divergent physical conditions within the quiescent cloud DC 314.8–5.1 as compared to molecular clouds with ongoing star formation.
Abstract
We report Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) observations of the radio-loud active galactic nucleus SBS 0846+513 (z = 0.5835), optically classified as a narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy, together ...with new and archival radio-to-X-ray data. The source was not active at γ-ray energies during the first two years of Fermi operation. A significant increase in activity was observed during 2010 October-2011 August. In particular, a strong γ-ray flare was observed in 2011 June reaching an isotropic γ-ray luminosity (0.1-300 GeV) of 1.0 × 1048 erg s−1, comparable to that of the brightest flat spectrum radio quasars, and showing spectral evolution in γ rays. An apparent superluminal velocity of (8.2 ± 1.5)c in the jet was inferred from 2011 to 2012 Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) images, suggesting the presence of a highly relativistic jet.
Both the power released by this object during the flaring activity and the apparent superluminal velocity are strong indications of the presence of a relativistic jet as powerful as those of blazars. In addition, variability and spectral properties in radio and γ-ray bands indicate blazar-like behaviour, suggesting that, except for some distinct optical characteristics, SBS 0846+513 could be considered as a young blazar at the low end of the blazar's black hole mass distribution.
Aims. Compact symmetric objects (CSOs) are thought to represent the first step in the evolutionary path of radio galaxies. In the present study, we investigated the X-ray emission of two CSOs ...confirmed to emit at GeV energies: PKS 1718–649 and TXS 1146+596. Unveiling the origin of their observed high-energy emission is crucial to establishing the physical parameters of the radio source and understanding how CSOs interact with the surrounding medium. Methods. We combined archival and new NuSTAR observations of PKS 1718–649 and TXS 1146+596 to have broadband X-ray coverage. For both sources, we modeled the broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) from the radio band up to γ -rays in order to derive their physical parameters. We also discuss the role of the ambient medium in confining the source expansion, which we investigate using X-ray obscuration. Results. For the first time, we report X-ray detections of PKS 1718–649 and 1146+596 with NuSTAR at energies higher than 10 keV. Combining Chandra and NuSTAR observations of TXS 1146+596, we reveal the presence of a multitemperature thermal component dominating the soft X-ray spectrum, and we interpret this finding as indicative of an AGN feedback process in action in this source. In addition, we show that two emitting electron populations are necessary to reproduce the observed broadband SED of TXS 1146+596: in our models, the X-ray emission could either be produced by synchrotron radiation or by a weak X-ray corona, or could be an ADAF-type emission. Interestingly, an additional X-ray component, namely a weak corona, is also required for PKS 1718–649. Moreover, we argue that heavily obscured and possibly frustrated sources tend to show different radio sizes with respect to those that are unobscured and free to expand.
