Usage-based insurance schemes provide new opportunities for insurers to accurately price and manage risk. These schemes have the potential to better identify risky drivers which not only allows insurance companies to better price their products but it allows drivers to modify their behaviour to make roads safer and driving more efficient. However, for Usage-based insurance products, we need to better understand how driver behaviours influence the risk of a crash or an insurance claim. In this article, we present our analysis of automotive telematics data from over 28 million trips. We use a case control methodology to study the relationship between crash drivers and crash-free drivers and introduce an innovative method for determining control (crash-free) drivers. We fit a logistic regression model to our data and found that speeding was the most important driver behaviour linking driver behaviour to crash risk.
The KamLAND experiment has determined a precise value for the neutrino oscillation parameter Deltam21(2) and stringent constraints on theta12. The exposure to nuclear reactor antineutrinos is ...increased almost fourfold over previous results to 2.44 x 10(32) proton yr due to longer livetime and an enlarged fiducial volume. An undistorted reactor nuovere energy spectrum is now rejected at >5sigma. Analysis of the reactor spectrum above the inverse beta decay energy threshold, and including geoneutrinos, gives a best fit at Deltam21(2)=7.58(-0.13)(+0.14)(stat) -0.15+0.15(syst) x 10(-5) eV2 and tan2theta12=0.56(-0.07)+0.10(stat) -0.06+0.10(syst). Local Deltachi2 minima at higher and lower Deltam21(2) are disfavored at >4sigma. Combining with solar neutrino data, we obtain Deltam21(2)=7.59(-0.21)+0.21 x 10(-5) eV2 and tan2theta12=0.47(-0.05)+0.06.
KamLAND has measured the flux of nu;(e)'s from distant nuclear reactors. We find fewer nu;(e) events than expected from standard assumptions about nu;(e) propagation at the 99.95% C.L. In a 162 ...ton.yr exposure the ratio of the observed inverse beta-decay events to the expected number without nu;(e) disappearance is 0.611+/-0.085(stat)+/-0.041(syst) for nu;(e) energies >3.4 MeV. In the context of two-flavor neutrino oscillations with CPT invariance, all solutions to the solar neutrino problem except for the "large mixing angle" region are excluded.
Epitaxial growth of topological insulator bismuth telluride by molecular beam epitaxy onto BaF2 (111) substrates is studied using Bi2Te3 and Te as source materials. By changing the beam flux ...composition, different stoichiometric phases are obtained, resulting in high quality Bi2Te3 and Bi1Te1 epilayers as shown by Raman spectroscopy and high-resolution X-ray diffraction. From X-ray reciprocal space mapping, the residual strain, as well as size of coherently scattering domains are deduced. The Raman modes for the two different phases are identified and the dielectric functions derived from spectroscopic ellipsometry investigations. Angular resolved photoemission reveals topologically protected surface states of the Bi2Te3 epilayers. Thus, BaF2 is a perfectly suited substrate material for the bismuth telluride compounds.
We show that in manganese-doped topological insulator bismuth telluride layers, Mn atoms are incorporated predominantly as interstitials in the van der Waals gaps between the quintuple layers and not ...substitutionally on Bi sites within the quintuple layers. The structural properties of epitaxial layers with Mn concentration of up to 13% are studied by high-resolution x-ray diffraction, evidencing a shrinking of both the in-plane and out-of plane lattice parameters with increasing Mn content. Ferromagnetism sets in for Mn contents around 3% and the Curie temperatures rises up to 15 K for a Mn concentration of 9%. The easy magnetization axis is along the c-axis perpendicular to the (0001) epilayer plane. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy reveals that the Fermi level is situated in the conduction band and no evidence for a gap opening at the topological surface state with the Dirac cone dispersion is found within the experimental resolution at temperatures close to the Curie temperature. From the detailed analysis of the extended x-ray absorption fine-structure experiments (EXAFS) performed at the MnK-edge, we demonstrate that the Mn atoms occupy interstitial positions within the van der Waals gap and are surrounded octahedrally by Te atoms of the adjacent quintuple layers.
The aim was to investigate the ability of self-assembling Peptide P11-4 Matrix (SAPM) to remineralize artificial initial caries lesions compared to the use of fluoride varnish. Volunteers were ...recruited for this randomised, cross-over in situ trial. Bovine specimens, half including orthodontic brackets, were recessed on the buccal aspects of mandibular appliances. Specimens included internal sound enamel control, a demineralised control and a part exposed during the in situ phase. Each phase lasted four weeks, followed by a one-week washout. Treatment groups were: A: negative control, no treatment,B: positive control, 22,600 ppm fluoride varnish,C: test group, 1,000 ppm SAPM. Laser fluorescence values (LF) were measured before/after demineralisation, and after the in situ period. Micro-CT analysis was used to assess mineral changes within the specimens after the in situ phase. In specimens without brackets, ΔLF values after in situ phase were: A: +5.28, B: +0.85, C: -2.89. Corresponding ΔLF for specimens with brackets were: A: +5.77, B: +1.30, C: -3.15. LF-values between groups significantly differed from each other (p < 0.0001) after the in situ phase. Micro-CT analysis yielded no significant difference among groups for specimens without brackets. For specimens with brackets, the test group showed significantly more remineralisation than the negative (p = 0.01) and positive control (p = 0.003). Within the limitations of the study, SAPM showed prevention of caries and remineralisation of enamel around orthodontic brackets.
We present the results of a search for extraterrestrial electron antineutrinos (v sub(e)'s) in the energy range 8.3 MeV < Ev sub(e) < 31.8 MeV using the KamLAND detector. In an exposure of 4.53 ...kton-year, we identify 25 candidate events. All of the candidate events can be attributed to background, most importantly neutral current atmospheric neutrino interactions, setting an upper limit on the probability of super(8)B solar converting into v sub(e)'s at 5.3 x 10 super(-5) (90% CL), if we assume an undistorted v sub(e) shape. This limit corresponds to a solar v sub(e) flux of 93 cm super(-2) s super(-1) or an event rate of 1.6 events (kton - year) super(-1) above the energy threshold Ev sub(e) > or =, slanted 8.3 MeV. The present data also allows us to set more stringent limits on the diffuse supernova neutrino flux and on the annihilation rates for light dark matter particles.
Monitoring several correlated quality characteristics of a process is common in modern manufacturing and service industries. Although a lot of attention has been paid to monitoring the multivariate ...process mean, not many control charts are available for monitoring the covariance matrix. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of the literature on control charts for monitoring the covariance matrix in a multivariate statistical process monitoring (MSPM) framework. It classifies the research that has previously appeared in the literature. We highlight the challenging areas for research and provide some directions for future research.
