To the important discussions in this book, I would like to offer some thoughts and a warning regarding the marginalization of two types of migrants in Europe and in the US: asylum seekers and illegal ...immigrants. While, of course, important differences exist between these two, there are also striking similarities. Unlike other migrants, such as those who liberal democracies crave because they make up the 'creative class' (Florida 2006), asylum seekers and illegal immigrants are not actively sought and indeed face considerable barriers to entry. Yet they enter anyway, raising concerns about national security, political stability, economic harm and cultural degradation. And once they have entered, Europe and the US, as liberal democracies, find it surprisingly difficult to either deport them or integrate them. This inability to deal with them satisfactorily leaves liberal democracies frustrated and migrants marginalized. Regrettably, on neither side of the Atlantic does the situation appear near resolution and, in fact, I fear that the US is now in danger of making the same mistake Europe has long made.
