Affective polarization—emotional polarization, or the hostility between the parties—has reached an unprecedented fever pitch. In Undue Hate, Daniel F. Stone tackles the biases undergirding affective polarization head-on. Stone explains why we often develop objectively false, and overly negative, beliefs about the other side—causing us to dislike them more than we should.Approaching affective polarization through the lens of behavioral economics, Undue Hate is unique in its use of simple mathematical concepts and models to illustrate how we misjudge those we disagree with, for both political and nonpolitical issues. Stone argues that while our biases may vary, just about all of us unwisely exacerbate conflict at times—managing to make ourselves worse off in the long run. Finally, the book offers both short- and long-term solutions for tempering our bias and limiting its negative consequences—and, just maybe, finding a way back to understanding one another before it is too late.
A set of 908 clinically derived colistin-resistant Enterobacteriaeae isolates collected worldwide in 2014-2016 were screened for the presence of the plasmid-borne mcr-1, mcr-2, mcr-3, mcr-4 and mcr-5 ...genes. In total 3.2% (29/908) of the collection were positive for mcr, including 27 Escherichia coli, 1 Klebsiella pneumoniae and 1 Enterobacter cloacae. Twenty-four isolates possessed genes from the mcr-1 family, including the original mcr-1 (n = 22), as well as mcr-1.2 (n = 1) and mcr-1.5 (n = 1), which each differ from mcr-1 by encoding single amino acid variations. Genes from the mcr-3 family were found in isolates from Thailand, including mcr-3.1 (n = 3) and mcr-3.2 (n = 1). An E. coli isolated from a patient with a urinary tract infection in Colombia contained the recently discovered mcr-5. The full colistin-resistant collection was tested against a panel of antimicrobial agents with ceftazidime-avibactam and tigecycline exhibiting the highest activity.

This study investigates the effects of variation in “congeniality” of news on Facebook user engagement (likes, shares, and comments). We compile an original data set of Facebook posts by 84 German news outlets on politicians that were investigated for criminal offenses from January 2012 to June 2017. We also construct an index of each outlet's media slant by comparing the language of the outlet with that of the main political parties, which allows us to measure the congeniality of the posts. We find that user engagement with congenial posts is higher than with uncongenial ones, especially in terms of likes. The within-outlet, within-topic design allows us to infer that the greater engagement with congenial news is likely driven by psychological and social factors, rather than a desire for accurate or otherwise instrumental information.

I present a model of affective polarization—growth in hostility over time between two parties—via quasi-Bayesian inference. In the model, two agents repeatedly choose actions. Each choice is based on ...a balance of concerns for private interests and the social good. More weight is put on private interests when an agent’s character is intrinsically more self-serving and when the other agent is believed to be more self-serving. Each agent Bayesian updates about the other’s character, and dislikes the other more when she is perceived as more self-serving. I characterize the effects on growth in dislike of three biases: a prior bias against the other agent’s character, the false consensus bias, and limited strategic thinking. Prior bias against the other’s character remains constant or declines over time, and actions do not diverge. The other two biases cause actions to become more extreme over time and repeatedly be “worse” than expected, causing mutual growth in dislike, that is, affective polarization. The magnitude of dislike can become arbitrarily large—even when both players are arbitrarily “good” (unselfish). The results imply that seemingly irrelevant cognitive biases can be an important cause of the devolution of relationships, in politics and beyond, and that subtlety and unawareness of bias can be key factors driving the degree of polarization.
Ceftibuten is an established, oral, third-generation cephalosporin in early clinical development in combination with an oral prodrug of avibactam for the treatment of complicated urinary tract ...infections, including acute pyelonephritis. We evaluated the
activity of ceftibuten-avibactam against 1,165 Enterobacterales isolates selected from the 2016-2020 ATLAS global surveillance program based upon their β-lactamase genotype, β-lactam-susceptible phenotype, species identification, and specimen source (95.8% urine). MICs were determined by CLSI broth microdilution. Avibactam was tested at a fixed concentration of 4 μg/mL. Molecular methods were used to identify β-lactamase genes. Ceftibuten-avibactam inhibited 90% (MIC
) of ESBL-producing (
= 645), KPC-producing (
= 60), chromosomal AmpC-positive (
= 100), OXA-48-like-producing (
= 50), and acquired AmpC-producing (
= 110) isolates at concentrations of 0.12, 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 μg/mL, respectively. At concentrations of ≤1 and ≤8 μg/mL, ceftibuten-avibactam inhibited 98.4 and 99.2% of ESBL-positive isolates; 96.7 and 100% of KPC-positive isolates; 91.0 and 99.0% of chromosomal AmpC-positive isolates; 86.0 and 96.0% of OXA-48-like-positive isolates; and 85.5 and 91.8% of acquired AmpC-positive isolates. Against ESBL-producing, KPC-producing, chromosomal AmpC-positive, OXA-48-like-producing, and acquired AmpC-producing isolates, ceftibuten-avibactam was 256-, 128-, >64-, >32-, and > 16-fold more potent than ceftibuten alone. The potency of ceftibuten-avibactam was 4-fold greater than ceftazidime-avibactam against ESBL-producing (ceftibuten-avibactam MIC
, 0.12 μg/mL; ceftazidime-avibactam MIC
, 0.5 μg/mL) and KPC-producing (0.5 μg/mL; 2 μg/mL) isolates, equivalent to ceftazidime-avibactam (MIC
, 2 μg/mL) against OXA-48-like-producing isolates, 2-fold less active than ceftazidime-avibactam (1 μg/mL; 0.5 μg/mL) against chromosomal AmpC-positive isolates, and 4-fold less active than ceftazidime-avibactam (4 μg/mL; 1 μg/mL) against acquired AmpC-producing isolates. Continued development of ceftibuten-avibactam appears justified.

Extreme partisan animosity has been on the rise in the US and is prevalent around the world. This hostility is typically attributed to social group identity, motivated reasoning, or a combination thereof. In this paper, I empirically examine a novel contributing factor: the “unmotivated” cognitive bias of overprecision (overconfidence in precision of beliefs). Overprecision could cause partisan hostility indirectly via inflated confidence in one’s own ideology, partisan identity, or perceptions of social distance between the parties. Overprecision could also cause this hostility directly by causing excessively strong inferences from observed information that is either skewed against the out-party or simply misunderstood. Using a nationally representative sample, I find consistent support for direct effects of overprecision and mixed support for indirect effects. The point estimates imply a one standard deviation increase in a respondent’s overprecision predicts as much as a 0.71 standard deviation decline in relative out-party favorability.
Abstract
Objectives
To determine the spread of ESBLs and carbapenemases in Enterobacterales and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Europe.
Methods
45 335 Gram-negative bacilli were collected in 18 European ...countries as part of the International Network for Optimal Resistance Monitoring (INFORM) global surveillance programme from 2013 to 2017. Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined using broth microdilution, and 9546 isolates were screened for β-lactamase genes by PCR and sequencing.
Results
ESBLs were identified in 35.5% of Klebsiella pneumoniae and 18.5% of Escherichia coli. ESBL carriage was lowest among isolates in Northern/Western Europe and highest in Eastern Europe. CTX-M-15 was the dominant ESBL in all countries except Greece, where SHV-type ESBLs were more common. Carbapenemases (KPC, OXA-48-like, GES, NDM and VIM) were found in 3.4% of Enterobacterales and were most common among K. pneumoniae (10.5% of those collected). Carbapenemase carriage was lowest in Northern/Western and highest in Southern Europe. KPC-positive Enterobacterales were most abundant but the percentages of OXA-48-like-, NDM- and VIM-positive isolates increased over time and were correlated with an increase in meropenem non-susceptibility. Carbapenemases (VIM, IMP, NDM and GES) were also identified in 5.1% of P. aeruginosa and were commonly found in Eastern Europe. Carbapenemase carriage and meropenem non-susceptibility among P. aeruginosa fluctuated over the 5 years studied and were not well correlated.
Conclusions
ESBL and carbapenemase carriage varied by species and European subregion. Meropenem non-susceptibility in European isolates of Enterobacterales can be attributed to carbapenemase carriage and is increasingly caused by MBLs and OXA-48-like carbapenemases. Carbapenemases or other β-lactamases are not a common cause of meropenem non-susceptibility in P. aeruginosa in Europe.
To estimate the incidence of carbapenem-resistant
(CRE), a global collection of 81,781 surveillance isolates of
collected from patients in 39 countries in five geographic regions from 2012 to 2017 ...was studied. Overall, 3.3% of isolates were meropenem-nonsusceptible (MIC ≥2 μg/ml), ranging from 1.4% (North America) to 5.3% (Latin America) of isolates by region. Klebsiella pneumoniae accounted for the largest number of meropenem-nonsusceptible isolates (76.7%). The majority of meropenem-nonsusceptible
carried KPC-type carbapenemases (47.4%), metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs; 20.6%) or OXA-48-like β-lactamases (19.0%). Forty-three carbapenemase sequence variants (8 KPC-type, 4 GES-type, 7 OXA-48-like, 5 NDM-type, 7 IMP-type, and 12 VIM-type) were detected, with KPC-2, KPC-3, OXA-48, NDM-1, IMP-4, and VIM-1 identified as the most common variants of each carbapenemase type. The resistance mechanisms responsible for meropenem-nonsusceptibility varied by region. A total of 67.3% of all carbapenemase-positive isolates identified carried at least one additional plasmid-mediated or intrinsic chromosomally encoded extended-spectrum β-lactamase, AmpC β-lactamase, or carbapenemase. The overall percentage of meropenem-nonsusceptible
increased from 2.7% in 2012 to 2014 to 3.8% in 2015 to 2017. This increase could be attributed to the increasing proportion of carbapenemase-positive isolates that was observed, most notably among isolates carrying NDM-type MBLs in Asia/South Pacific, Europe, and Latin America; OXA-48-like carbapenemases in Europe, Middle East/Africa, and Asia/South Pacific; VIM-type MBLs in Europe; and KPC-type carbapenemases in Latin America. Ongoing CRE surveillance combined with a global antimicrobial stewardship strategy, sensitive clinical laboratory detection methods, and adherence to infection control practices will be needed to interrupt the spread of CRE.
The in vitro activity of ceftazidime-avibactam was evaluated against 34,062 isolates of Enterobacteriaceae from patients with intra-abdominal, urinary tract, skin and soft-tissue, lower respiratory ...tract, and blood infections collected in the INFORM (International Network For Optimal Resistance Monitoring) global surveillance study (176 medical center laboratories in 39 countries) in 2012 to 2014. Overall, 99.5% of Enterobacteriaceae isolates were susceptible to ceftazidime-avibactam using FDA approved breakpoints (susceptible MIC of ≤8 μg/ml; resistant MIC of ≥16 μg/ml). For individual species of the Enterobacteriaceae, the ceftazidime-avibactam MIC inhibiting ≥90% of isolates (MIC90) ranged from 0.06 μg/ml for Proteus species to 1 μg/ml for Enterobacter spp. and Klebsiella pneumoniae Carbapenem-susceptible isolates of Escherichia coli, K. pneumoniae, Klebsiella oxytoca, and Proteus mirabilis with a confirmed extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) phenotype, or a ceftazidime MIC of ≥16 μg/ml if the ESBL phenotype was not confirmed by clavulanic acid inhibition, were characterized further to identify the presence of specific ESBL- and plasmid-mediated AmpC β-lactamase genes using a microarray-based assay and additional PCR assays. Ceftazidime-avibactam demonstrated potent activity against molecularly confirmed ESBL-producing (n = 5,354; MIC90, 0.5 μg/ml; 99.9% susceptible), plasmid-mediated AmpC-producing (n = 246; MIC90, 0.5 μg/ml; 100% susceptible), and ESBL- and AmpC-producing (n = 152; MIC90, 1 μg/ml; 100% susceptible) isolates of E. coli, K. pneumoniae, K. oxytoca, and P. mirabilis We conclude that ceftazidime-avibactam demonstrates potent in vitro activity against globally collected clinical isolates of Enterobacteriaceae, including isolates producing ESBLs and AmpC β-lactamases.
