Many previous studies of US cigarette and alcohol consumption have focused on single equations. However, the addictive nature of consumption suggests that it is more appropriate to model these ...products as a system. We propose a two-step estimation procedure and apply the procedure to a system of equations for cigarette, beer and wine consumption. Results differ from those derived from an existing two-step procedure. Findings suggest that consumption of cigarettes, beer and wine is responsive to income changes but the elasticities are rather small. Personal physiques, education, age, race, ethnicity, health, gender, employment status, and regions also play significant roles in consumption.

l-Dopa) oxidation catalyzed by tyrosinase. It was found that the tyrosinase inhibitory activities of all the extracts increased with the increase of their concentrations. The inhibition kinetics, analyzed by Lineweaver–Burk plots, revealed that
G. paraguayense extracts showed a mixed-type inhibition for mushroom tyrosinase when
l-Dopa was used as substrate. A comparison of the IC
50 and

i values showed that GE95 exhibited the most effective inhibition of tyrosinase among the extracts.
We report a polymer-stabilized liquid crystal (LC) microlens array with a large dynamic range and fast response time. The top substrate has a planar indium-tin oxide (ITO) electrode, while the bottom ...substrate has two patterned ITO electrodes for generating a fringing field and uniform longitudinal field. The fringing field is utilized to create the desired gradient refractive index profile in the LC/monomer layer, which is later stabilized by UV curing to form polymer networks. To tune the focal length, we apply a longitudinal field to change the lens shape. This microlens array offers several attractive features, such as large dynamic range, fast response time, and good mechanical stability.
An A-->T substitution in cDNA nucleotide 1197 (c.1197A/T) of the human phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) gene has been regarded as a silent mutation, because both the wild-type (GUA) and the mutant ...(GUU) alleles encode a valine residue at codon 399 (V399 V). The nucleotide c.1197 is located at the 3'-end of exon 11at position -3 of the exon-intron junction. To explore whether the substitution exerts any effects on the processing of the PAH mRNA, illegitimate PAH transcripts from lymphoblast cultures of a phenylketonuria (PKU) patient heterozygous for c.1197A/T were analyzed by the polymerase chain reaction following reverse-transcription (RT-PCR). mRNAs with an exon 11 deletion were revealed. Furthermore, by using an R408 W mutation in the paternal allele as a marker, sequence analysis of the RT-PCR products indicates that virtually all PAH transcripts from the maternal allele with the c. 1197A/T substitution do not contain exon 11. To address whether this substitution is the main determinant for exon skipping, PAH minigenes with or without the substitution were constructed and transfected to a human hepatoma cell line. Analysis of the transcription products by S1 nuclease mapping clearly indicated that such exon 11 skipping was directly associated with the c.1197A/T substitution. Thus, this study demonstrates that the c.1197A/T substitution in the PAH gene is not just a neutral polymorphism but a mutation that induces post-transcriptional skipping of exon 11 leading to a PKU phenotype.

Objectif Déterminer le pourcentage d'adultes souffrant d'hypertension qui ont indiqué: (i) avoir déjà été diagnostiqués hypertendus; (ii) prendre des antihypertenseurs; et enfin, (iii) avoir réussi à ...garder leur hypertension sous contrôle. Et ce, dans cinq sites de surveillance démographique et sanitaire à travers cinq pays différents en Asie. Méthodes Des données ont été récoltées lors d'enquêtes menées auprès des ménages entre 2016 et 2020, sur les cinq sites de surveillance au Bangladesh, en Inde, en Indonésie, en Malaisie et au Vietnam. Nous avons fixé divers critères pour définir l'hypertension: une pression artérielle systolique ≥ 140 mmHg, une pression artérielle diastolique ≥ 90 mmHg ou la prise d'hypertenseurs. L'hypertension était considérée comme sous contrôle lorsque la pression artérielle systolique < 140 mmHg et la pression artérielle diastolique < 90 mmHg. Enfin, nous avons ventilé la sensibilisation à l'hypertension, son traitement et son contrôle selon les sites de surveillance et, pour chaque site, selon le sexe, la tranche d'âge, le niveau d'éducation, l'indice de masse corporelle et un éventuel tabagisme. Résultats Sur 22 142 participants, 11 137 souffraient d'hypertension: 211 au Bangladesh; 487 en Inde; 1641 en Indonésie; 8164 en Malaisie; et 634 au Vietnam. L'âge moyen des participants souffrant d'hypertension s'élevait à 60 ans (plage comprise entre 19 et 101 ans). Le site malaisien était le seul site où plus de la moitié des individus hypertendus étaient conscients de leur état. Le traitement de l'hypertension allait de 20,8% (341/1641; IC de 95%: 18,8-22,8%) sur le site indonésien à 44,7% (3649/8164; IC de 95%: 43,6-45,8%) sur le site malaisien. Moins d'un participant sur quatre atteint d'hypertension était parvenu à la maintenir sous contrôle. Les femmes et les adultes plus âgés étaient généralement davantage sensibilisés à l'hypertension, ainsi qu'à son traitement et son contrôle. Conclusion D'importantes variations ont été observées en matière de sensibilisation et de traitement de l'hypertension d'un site de surveillance à l'autre. En revanche, quel que soit le site, rares étaient celles et ceux chez qui l'hypertension était sous contrôle.
