ABSTRACT
We present the first asteroseismic results for δ Scuti and γ Doradus stars observed in Sectors 1 and 2 of the TESS mission. We utilize the 2-min cadence TESS data for a sample of 117 stars ...to classify their behaviour regarding variability and place them in the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram using Gaia DR2 data. Included within our sample are the eponymous members of two pulsator classes, γ Doradus and SX Phoenicis. Our sample of pulsating intermediate-mass stars observed by TESS also allows us to confront theoretical models of pulsation driving in the classical instability strip for the first time and show that mixing processes in the outer envelope play an important role. We derive an empirical estimate of 74 per cent for the relative amplitude suppression factor as a result of the redder TESS passband compared to the Kepler mission using a pulsating eclipsing binary system. Furthermore, our sample contains many high-frequency pulsators, allowing us to probe the frequency variability of hot young δ Scuti stars, which were lacking in the Kepler mission data set, and identify promising targets for future asteroseismic modelling. The TESS data also allow us to refine the stellar parameters of SX Phoenicis, which is believed to be a blue straggler.
We report the discovery and characterisation of a super-Earth and a sub-Neptune transiting the bright (
K
= 8.8), quiet, and nearby (37 pc) M3V dwarf TOI-1266. We validate the planetary nature of ...TOI-1266 b and c using four sectors of TESS photometry and data from the newly-commissioned 1-m SAINT-EX telescope located in San Pedro Mártir (México). The host brightness and negligible activity combined with the planetary system architecture and favourable planet-to-star radii ratios makes TOI-1266 an exquisite system for a detailed characterisation.
We have developed an efficient simulation tool 'GOLLUM' for the computation of electrical, spin and thermal transport characteristics of complex nanostructures. The new multi-scale, multi-terminal ...tool addresses a number of new challenges and functionalities that have emerged in nanoscale-scale transport over the past few years. To illustrate the flexibility and functionality of GOLLUM, we present a range of demonstrator calculations encompassing charge, spin and thermal transport, corrections to density functional theory such as local density approximation +U (LDA+U) and spectral adjustments, transport in the presence of non-collinear magnetism, the quantum Hall effect, Kondo and Coulomb blockade effects, finite-voltage transport, multi-terminal transport, quantum pumps, superconducting nanostructures, environmental effects, and pulling curves and conductance histograms for mechanically-controlled break-junction experiments.
In this work, we present 16 directional and 27 intensity high‐quality values from Iberia. Moreover, we have updated the Iberian archeomagnetic catalogue published more than 10 years ago with a ...considerable increase in the database. This has led to a notable improvement of both temporal and spatial data distribution. A full vector paleosecular variation curve from 1000 BC to 1900 AD has been developed using high‐quality data within a radius of 900 km from Madrid. A hierarchical bootstrap method has been followed for the computation of the curves. The most remarkable feature of the new curves is a notable intensity maximum of about 80 μT around 600 BC, which has not been previously reported for the Iberian Peninsula. We have also analyzed the evolution of the paleofield in Europe for the last three thousand years and conclude that the high maximum intensity values observed around 600 BC in the Iberian Peninsula could respond to the same feature as the Levantine Iron Age Anomaly, after travelling westward through Europe.
Plain language summary
Knowledge of the Earth's magnetic field plays an important role on the understanding of its dynamics. By measuring certain rocks or archeological objects from around the world, we can determine the field's shape and intensity in former times. Knowing its evolution is essential to understand how this field is generated, how it has varied through time and how it may behave in the future. In this work, we present new measurements of the magnetic field from the Iberian Peninsula that provide useful constraints on the magnetic field for archeological times that currently lack information. We have updated the compilation of Iberian data for the last 3,000 years and calculated a new reference curve for the magnetic field for this region. We have found that the magnetic field was particularly intense in the Iberian Peninsula about 2,600 years ago. By comparing this result with data from Europe and the Middle East, we observe that this high intensity has been moving from east to west through southern Europe. This feature is probably related with the rapid intensity change (the geomagnetic spike) recently discovered in the Levantine region.

The phospholipase A2 (PLA2) superfamily consists of lipolytic enzymes that hydrolyze specific cell membrane phospholipids and have long been considered a central hub of biosynthetic pathways, where ...their lipid metabolites exert a variety of physiological roles. A misregulated PLA2 activity is associated with mainly inflammatory-derived pathologies and thus has shown relevant therapeutic potential. Many natural and synthetic anti-inflammatory drugs (AIDs) have been proposed as direct modulators of PLA2 activity. However, despite the specific chemical properties that these drugs share in common, little is known about the indirect modulation able to finely tune membrane structural changes at the precise lipid-binding site. Here, we use a novel experimental strategy based on differential scanning calorimetry to systematically study the structural properties of lipid membrane systems during PLA2 cleavage and under the influence of several AIDs. For a better understanding of the AIDs-membrane interaction, we present a comprehensive and comparative set of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Our thermodynamic results clearly demonstrate that PLA2 cleavage is hindered by those AIDs that significantly reduce the lipid membrane cooperativity, while the rest of the AIDs oppositely tend to catalyze PLA2 activity to different extents. On the other hand, our MD simulations support experimental results by providing atomistic details on the binding, insertion, and dynamics of each AID on a pure lipid system; the drug efficacy to impact membrane cooperativity is related to the lipid order perturbation. This work suggests a membrane-based mechanism of action for diverse AIDs against PLA2 activity and provides relevant clues that must be considered in its modulation.
The candidate SX Phe star KIC 11754974 shows a remarkably high number of combination frequencies in the Fourier amplitude spectrum: 123 of the 166 frequencies in our multifrequency fit are linear ...combinations of independent modes. Predictable patterns in frequency spacings are seen in the Fourier transform of the light curve. We present an analysis of 180 d of short-cadence Kepler photometry and of new spectroscopic data for this evolved, late A-type star. We infer from the 1150-d, long-cadence light curve, and in two different ways, that our target is the primary of a 343-d, non-eclipsing binary system. According to both methods, the mass function is similar, f(M) = 0.0207 ± 0.0003 M. The observed pulsations are modelled extensively, using separate, state-of-the-art, time-dependent convection (TDC) and rotating models. The models match the observed temperature and low metallicity, finding a mass of 1.50-1.56 M. The models suggest that the whole star is metal poor, and that the low metallicity is not just a surface abundance peculiarity. This is the best frequency analysis of an SX Phe star, and the only Kepler δ Sct star to be modelled with both TDC and rotating models.
Vitrification in a dilute colloidal system needs an asymmetric particle composition (a mixture of nano and micro colloids) to materialize. The volume fraction of the large particles increases (up to ...0.58) driven by depletion forces produced by the smaller colloids. Such entropic forces are short-ranged and attractive. We found a different type of dynamical arrest in an extremely dilute asymmetric mixture of nanovesicles and polystyrene microparticles, where energy, instead of entropy, is the main protagonist to drive the arrest. Furthermore, when the vesicles go through the gel-fluid phase transition, the mean square displacements of the microparticles suffer a sudden splitting indicating a viscous jump. If the vesicles are doped with negatively charged lipids, particles and vesicles repel each other and the rheology of the mixture becomes athermal and Newtonian. Our findings are important to understand caging phenomena in biological systems, where diverse electrostatic distributions are present.

Context. Transiting sub-Neptune-type planets, with radii approximately between 2 and 4R⊕, are of particular interest as their study allows us to gain insight into the formation and evolution of a ...class of planets that are not found in our Solar System. Aims. We exploit the extreme radial velocity (RV) precision of the ultra-stable echelle spectrograph ESPRESSO on the VLT to unveil the physical properties of the transiting sub-Neptune TOI-130 b, uncovered by the TESS mission orbiting the nearby, bright, late F-typestar HD 5278 (TOI-130) with a period of Pb=14.3 days. Methods. We used 43 ESPRESSO high-resolution spectra and broad-band photometry information to derive accurate stellar atmospheric and physical parameters of HD 5278. We exploited the TESS light curve and spectroscopic diagnostics to gauge the impact of stellar activity on the ESPRESSO RVs. We performed separate as well as joint analyses of the TESS photometry and the ESPRESSORVs using fully Bayesian frameworks to determine the system parameters. Results. Based on the ESPRESSO spectra, the updated stellar parameters of HD 5278 are Teff=6203±64K, logg=4.50±0.11dex, Fe/H =−0.12±0.04dex,M?=1.126+0.036−0.035M, and R?=1.194+0.017−0.016R. We determine HD 5278 b’s mass and radius to be Mb=7.8+1.5−1.4M⊕ and Rb=2.45±0.05R⊕. The derived mean density, %b=2.9+0.6−0.5g cm−3, is consistent with the bulk composition of a sub-Neptune with a substantial (∼30%) water mass fraction and with a gas envelope comprising ∼17% of the measured radius. Given the host brightness and irradiation levels, HD 5278 b is one of the best targets orbiting G-F primaries for follow-up atmospheric characterization measurements with HST and JWST. We discover a second, non-transiting companion in the system, with a period of Pc=40.87+0.18−0.17days and a minimum mass of Mcsinic=18.4+1.8−1.9M⊕. We study emerging trends in parameters space (e.g., mass, radius, stellar insolation, and mean density) of the growing population of transiting sub-Neptunes, and provide statistical evidence for a low occurrence of close-in,10−15M⊕companions around G-F primaries withTeff&5500K.
