Photocatalytic water splitting using sunlight is a promising technology capable of providing high energy yield without pollutant byproducts. Herein, we review various aspects of this technology ...including chemical reactions, physiochemical conditions and photocatalyst types such as metal oxides, sulfides, nitrides, nanocomposites, and doped materials followed by recent advances in computational modeling of photoactive materials. As the best-known catalyst for photocatalytic hydrogen and oxygen evolution, TiO₂ is discussed in a separate section, along with its challenges such as the wide band gap, large overpotential for hydrogen evolution, and rapid recombination of produced electron-hole pairs. Various approaches are addressed to overcome these shortcomings, such as doping with different elements, heterojunction catalysts, noble metal deposition, and surface modification. Development of a photocatalytic corrosion resistant, visible light absorbing, defect-tuned material with small particle size is the key to complete the sunlight to hydrogen cycle efficiently. Computational studies have opened new avenues to understand and predict the electronic density of states and band structure of advanced materials and could pave the way for the rational design of efficient photocatalysts for water splitting. Future directions are focused on developing innovative junction architectures, novel synthesis methods and optimizing the existing active materials to enhance charge transfer, visible light absorption, reducing the gas evolution overpotential and maintaining chemical and physical stability.
This personal account concerns novel recent discoveries in the area of mesoporous materials. Most of the papers discussed have been published within the last two to three years. A major emphasis of ...most of these papers is the synthesis of unique mesoporous materials by a variety of synthetic methods. Many of these articles focus on the control of the pore sizes and shapes of mesoporous materials. Synthetic methods of various types have been used for such control of porosity including soft templating, hard templating, nano‐casting, electrochemical methods, surface functionalization, and trapping of species in pores. The types of mesoporous materials range from carbon materials, metal oxides, metal sulfides, metal nitrides, carbonitriles, metal organic frameworks (MOFs), and composite materials. The vast majority of recent publications have centered around biological applications with a majority dealing with drug delivery systems. Several other bio‐based articles on mesoporous systems concern biomass conversion and biofuels, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies, ultrasound therapy, enzyme immobilization, antigen targeting, biodegradation of inorganic materials, applications for improved digestion, and antitumor activity. Numerous nonbiological applications of mesoporous materials have been pursued recently. Some specific examples are photocatalysis, photo‐electrocatalysis, lithium ion batteries, heterogeneous catalysis, extraction of metals, extraction of lanthanide and actinide species, chiral separations and catalysis, capturing and the mode of binding of carbon dioxide (CO2), optical devices, and magneto‐optical devices. Of this latter class of applications, heterogeneous catalysis is predominant. Some of the types of catalytic reactions being pursued include hydrogen generation, selective oxidations, aminolysis, Suzuki coupling and other coupling reactions, oxygen reduction reactions (ORR), oxygen evolution reactions (OER), and bifunctional catalysis. For perspective, there have been over 40,000 articles on mesoporous materials published in the last 4 years and about 1388 reviews. By no means is this personal account thorough or all inclusive. One objective has been to choose a variety of articles of different types to obtain a flavor of the breadth of diversity involved in the area of mesoporous materials.
This review concerns recent developments in the area of mesoporous materials.
This Account first gives a historical overview of the development of octahedral molecular sieve (OMS) and octahedral layer (OL) materials based on porous mixed-valent manganese oxides. Unique ...properties of such systems include excellent semiconductivity and porosity. Materials that are conducting and porous are rare and can offer novel properties not normally available with most molecular sieve materials. The good semiconductivity of OMS and OL systems not only permits potential applications of the conductivity of these materials but also allows characterization of these systems where charging effects are often a problem. Porous manganese oxide natural materials are found as manganese nodules, and these materials when dredged from the ocean floors have been used as excellent adsorbents of metals such as from electroplating wastes and have been shown to be excellent catalysts. Rational for synthesis of novel OMS and OL materials is related to the superb conductivity, microporosity, and catalytic activity of these natural materials. The natural systems are often found as mixtures, are poorly crystalline, and have incredibly diverse compositions due to exposure to various aqueous environments in nature. Such exposure allows ion exchange to occur. Preparation of pure crystalline OL and OMS systems is one of the very significant goals of this work. The status of this research area is one of moderate development. Opportunities exist for preparation of a multitude of novel materials. Some applications of these materials have recently been achieved primarily in the area of catalysis and membranes, and others such as sensors and adsorptive systems are likely. Characterization studies are becoming more sophisticated as new materials and proper preparation of materials for such characterization studies are being done. The research area involved in this work is solid state chemistry. The fields of materials synthesis, characterization, and applications of materials are all important in developments of this field. Researchers in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, physics, and biological sciences are actively pursuing research in this area. The most significant results found in this work are related to the novel structural and physical properties of porous manganese oxide materials. Variable pore size materials have been synthesized using structure directors and with a variety of synthetic methodologies. Transformations of tunnel materials with temperature and in specific atmosphere have recently been studied with in situ synchrotron methods. Conductivities of these materials appear to be related to the structural properties of these systems with more open structures being less conductive. Catalytic properties of these OMS and OL materials have been shown to be related to the redox cycling of various oxidations states of manganese such as Mn2+, Mn3+, and Mn4+. Chemists interested in synthesis of new materials, the chemistry of solids, enhancing the rates of catalytic reactions, and finding new applications of materials would be interested in these novel materials. Fundamental properties of electron transfer are critical to this research. Concepts of nonstoichiometry, defects, oxygen vacancies, and intermediates are fundamental to many of the syntheses, characterization, and applications such as fuel cells, catalysis, adsorption, sensors, batteries, and related applications.
Manganese oxides of various structures (α-, β-, and δ-MnO2 and amorphous) were synthesized by facile methods. The electrocatalytic properties of these materials were systematically investigated for ...catalyzing both oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline media. Extensive characterization was correlated with the activity study by investigating the crystal structures (XRD, HRTEM), morphologies (SEM), porosities (BET), surfaces (XPS, O2-TPD/MS), and electrochemical properties (Tafel analysis, Koutechy–Levich plots, and constant-current electrolysis). These combined results show that the electrocatalytic activities are strongly dependent on the crystallographic structures, and follow an order of α-MnO2 > AMO > β-MnO2 > δ-MnO2. Both OER studies and ORR studies reveal similar structure-determined activity trends in alkaline media. In the OER studies, α-MnO2 displays an overpotential of 490 mV compared to 380 mV shown by an Ir/C catalyst in reaching 10 mA cm–2. Meanwhile, α-MnO2 also exhibits stability for 3 h when supplying a constant current density of 5 mA cm–2. This was further improved by adding Ni2+ dopants (ca. 8 h). The superior OER activity was attributed to several factors, including abundant di-μ-oxo bridges existing in α-MnO2 as the protonation sites, analogous to the OEC in PS-II of the natural water oxidation system; the mixed valencies (AOS = 3.7); and the lowest charge transfer resistances (91.8 Ω, η = 430 mV) as revealed from in situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). In the ORR studies, when reaching 3 mA cm–2, α-MnO2 shows 760 mV close to 860 mV for the best ORR catalyst (20% Pt/C). The outstanding ORR activity was due to the strongest O2 adsorption capability of α-MnO2 suggested by temperature-programmed desorption. As a result, this discovery of the structure-related electrocatalytic activities could provide guidance in the further development of easily prepared, scalable, and low-cost catalysts based on metal oxides and their derivatives.
Using molecular simulation for adsorbent screening is computationally expensive and thus prohibitive to materials discovery. Machine learning (ML) algorithms trained on fundamental material ...properties can potentially provide quick and accurate methods for screening purposes. Prior efforts have focused on structural descriptors for use with ML. In this work, the use of chemical descriptors, in addition to structural descriptors, was introduced for adsorption analysis. Evaluation of structural and chemical descriptors coupled with various ML algorithms, including decision tree, Poisson regression, support vector machine and random forest, were carried out to predict methane uptake on hypothetical metal organic frameworks. To highlight their predictive capabilities, ML models were trained on 8% of a data set consisting of 130,398 MOFs and then tested on the remaining 92% to predict methane adsorption capacities. When structural and chemical descriptors were jointly used as ML input, the random forest model with 10-fold cross validation proved to be superior to the other ML approaches, with an R 2 of 0.98 and a mean absolute percent error of about 7%. The training and prediction using the random forest algorithm for adsorption capacity estimation of all 130,398 MOFs took approximately 2 h on a single personal computer, several orders of magnitude faster than actual molecular simulations on high-performance computing clusters.
Alloying palladium (Pd) catalysts with various metalloid and nonmetal elements can improve their catalytic performance in different chemical reactions. However, current nanosynthesis methods can only ...generate Pd alloys containing one metalloid or nonmetal, which limits the types of element combinations that may be used to improve Pd-based nanocatalysts. Herein, we report a simple soft-templating synthetic strategy to co-alloy Pd with the metalloid boron (B) and the nonmetal phosphorus (P) to generate ternary PdBP mesoporous nanospheres (MSs) with three-dimensional dendritic frameworks. We use a one-step aqueous synthesis method where dimethylamine borane and sodium hypophosphite serve as the B and P sources, respectively, as well as the co-reducing agents to drive the nucleation and growth of ternary PdBP alloy on a sacrificial dioctadecyldimethylammonium chloride template. The concentration of metalloid to nonmetal and the diameters of dendritic MSs can be tailored. The synthetic protocol is also extended to other multicomponent PdMBP alloy MSs to generate different types of dendritic mesoporous frameworks. Boron and phosphorus are known to accelerate the kinetics of the electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and alcohol oxidation reactions (AORs), because their alloys promote the decomposition of oxygen-containing intermediates on Pd surfaces. The dendritic mesoporous morphology of the ternary PdBP MSs also accelerates electron/mass transfer and exposes numerous active sites, enabling better performance in the ORR and AORs. Extending the surfactant-templating synthetic route to multiple types of elements will enable the generation of libraries of multicomponent metal–metalloid-nonmetal alloy nanostructures with functions that are suitable for various targeted applications.

A newly designed Fe2O3@CeO2-ZrO2/Palygorskite heterogeneous Fenton catalyst with high degradation efficiency toward Congo Red (CR) is reported. The iron oxide (Fe2O3) was used as the ...originator of hydroxyl radicals (OH), CeO2-ZrO2 was used as an efficient matrix of Fe2O3 to enhance the oxidation performance, and the Palygorskite (Pal) played the role of substrate and adsorbent. A synergetic effect of the catalyst was realized by enhancing the adsorption capacity and dispersibility of CeO2-ZrO2 and Fe2O3 nanoparticles, and also due to charge transfer between these two species. The products were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, TEM, XPS, VSM and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms. The catalytic activities were evaluated in terms of many reaction parameters. The removal efficiency of CR was up to 95% on Fe2O3@CeO2-ZrO2/Pal under optimized conditions (Pal accounted for 30% of the catalyst mass fraction and Ce/Zr atoms molar ratio = 8:2, T = 30 °C, pH = 3.4, 4 g L−1 catalyst, 40 mM H2O2 and 500 mg/L CR), the product also has shown good reusability. Both α-Fe2O3 and CeO2-ZrO2 played important roles in the generation of hydroxyl radicals, which determined the catalytic efficiency of the composite catalyst. Fe2O3@CeO2-ZrO2/Pal was proven to be a promising candidate in the field of heterogeneous Fenton catalysis.
Due to their synergistic structural and compositional advantages, ultrathin multimetallic nanosheets are widely recognized as highly efficient electrocatalysts for alcohol electrooxidation. However, ...despite significant efforts, current synthetic strategies for the preparation of multimetallic nanosheets mainly focus on the reduction of metal precursors in organic solvents or in the presence of toxic CO. In this study, a one-pot aqueous synthesis method based on the self-assembly of the novel surfactant docosyltrimethylammonium chloride was employed to produce ultrathin free-standing trimetallic PdPtCu nanosheets under ambient and eco-friendly conditions. No toxic chemicals or organic solvents were employed in this synthesis. The obtained PdPtCu nanosheets were ultrathin with a dendrite-like nanostructure (with an average thickness of ∼3.5 nm) and alloyed crystalline features. The proposed synthetic strategy is also universally applicable for tuning the elemental ratios and compositions of ultrathin multimetallic nanosheets. Due to the multiple advantages of unique ultrathin dendrite nanostructures and multimetallic elemental compositions, the PdPtCu nanosheets exhibited remarkably enhanced performance in the electrooxidation of alcohols (methanol, ethanol, glycerol and glucose). The proposed one-pot eco-friendly synthetic concept could be used to build more multimetallic nanostructures with synergetic enhancement effects for a range of electrocatalytic applications.
A unique approach for the synthesis of nonstoichiometric, mesoporous molybdenum oxide (MoO3–x) with nanosized crystalline walls by using a soft template (PEO‐b‐PS) synthesis method is introduced. The ...as‐synthesized mesoporous MoO3–x is very active and stable (durability > 12 h) for the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under both acidic and alkaline conditions. The intrinsic MoO3 serves as an HER electrocatalyst without the assistance of carbon materials, noble metals, or MoS2 materials. The results from transmission electron microscopy and N2 sorption techniques show that the as‐synthesized mesoporous MoO3–x has large accessible pores (20–40 nm), which are able to facilitate mass transport and charge transfer during HER. In terms of X‐ray diffraction, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, temperature‐programmed oxidation, and diffusive reflectance UV–vis spectroscopy, the mesoporous MoO3–x exhibits mixed oxidation states (Mo5+, Mo6+) and an oxygen‐deficient structure. The as‐synthesized MoO3–x only requires a low overpotential (≈0.14 V) to achieve a 10 mA cm−2 current density in 0.1 m KOH and the Tafel slope is as low as 56 mV dec−1. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate a change of electronic structure and the possible reaction pathway of HER. Oxygen vacancies and mesoporosity serve as key factors for excellent performance.
