We described the teleomorph of Fusarium sacchari as Gibberella sacchari, sp. nov. This species can be separated from other species of Gibberella on the basis of the longer, narrower ascospores found ...in G. sacchari and by sexual cross fertility. Female-fertile mating type tester strains were developed that can be used for making sexual crosses with this heterothallic fungus under laboratory conditions. The anamorph, Fusarium sacchari, was neotypified.
In this letter, we advocate recognizing the genus Fusarium as the sole name for a group that includes virtually all Fusarium species of importance in plant pathology, mycotoxicology, medicine, and ...basic research. This phylogenetically guided circumscription will free scientists from any obligation to use other genus names, including teleomorphs, for species nested within this clade, and preserve the application of the name Fusarium in the way it has been used for almost a century. Due to recent changes in the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants, this is an urgent matter that requires community attention. The alternative is to break the longstanding concept of Fusarium into nine or more genera, and remove important taxa such as those in the F. solani species complex from the genus, a move we believe is unnecessary. Here we present taxonomic and nomenclatural proposals that will preserve established research connections and facilitate communication within and between research communities, and at the same time support strong scientific principles and good taxonomic practice.
Several Fusarium species are associated with wheat stems in New Zealand, but there are no detailed reports on the relative abundance and distribution of these species. Hence, a survey was conducted ...on the South Island of New Zealand to assess the frequency of isolation of Fusarium species associated with randomly collected wheat stem bases and seven grass species. A total of 11 Fusarium species were isolated from wheat stem bases, six of which were also isolated from the other grasses. Putative isolates of the known wheat pathogens F. culmorum and F. pseudograminearum were recovered from wheat and grass stem bases. Fusarium culmorum was isolated from 16% of all wheat stems compared with F. pseudograminearum which was only isolated from 1.5% of the wheat stems. Amplified fragment length polymorphism analysis revealed five distinct clusters among the isolates analysed. These clusters correspond to four pathogenic species, F. pseudograminearum, F. culmorum, F. crookwellense and F. graminearum, based on the sequence of the Tef-1 (translation elongation factor-1 alpha ) gene. Isolates from the grass Chionochloa rubra ssp. cuprea which were putatively identified as F. pseudograminearum based on morphological features were found to be isolates of F. graminearum that could not form perithecia homothallically under laboratory conditions. Molecular characterisation confirmed the association of F. pseudograminearum with wheat stem bases, and indicated that there is some genetic divergence between isolates of this important pathogen recovered on the North and the South Islands of New Zealand.

We investigate the signal propagation in AC-LGAD (aka RSD), which are LGAD with a common N+ layer and segmented AC-coupled readout contacts, by measuring the response to IR laser TCT on a large ...selection of AC-LGAD with strip readout. The interest for this topic derives from the realization that while large charge sharing between neighboring strips is essential for good position resolution, large sharing beyond the next neighbor generates background signals which in general are detrimental to the sensor goal of low occupancy. Using AC-LGAD with strip readout produced by Hamamatsu Photonics (HPK), we evaluate the effects of a variety of sensor properties, including geometrical parameters (strip length, width), process parameters like the N+ layer resistivity, the coupling capacitance, and the thickness of the bulk on the signal sharing and the position resolution.
•AC-LGAD are a new form of Ultra-Fast Silicon Detectors.•They have highly segmented readout reducing power consumption.•Signal sharing leads to high precision temporal and spatial resolution.

Fusarium wilt of basil, caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. basilici, occurs worldwide but has not been officially recorded in Australia. Fourteen isolates of F. oxysporum were collected from ...diseased basil from a number of locations in Australia. A PCR diagnostic test previously shown to react only with isolates of F. oxysporum f. sp. basilici was used to identify the isolates and Koch's postulates were performed for a subset of isolates to confirm pathogenicity. Two techniques, vegetative compatibility grouping and DNA fingerprinting using enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC) targeted primers, were used to analyse all isolates. Diagnostic PCR confirmed that 11 of the isolates were F. oxysporum f. sp. basilici and they were shown to belong to a single VCG and to have a single ERIC profile, indicating that the population is essentially clonal. This is the first report of this pathogen in Australia.PUBLICATION ABSTRACT

Phytophthora cinnamomi is causing the death of a dominant understorey shrub (Oxylobium arborescens) in subalpine woodland at Barrington Tops National Park, northern New South Wales. A threatened ...species, Tasmannia purpurascens, is also affected. The diseased area is about 5 ha, which is large in New South Wales where P. cinnamomi has not been regarded as a serious pathogen. Cuttings of the Wollemi Pine, Wollemia nobilis, were inoculated with Phytophthora cinnamomi, Botyosphaeria sp., Rhizoctonia sp., Fusarium oxysporum and F. solani. P. cinnamomi and the Botyosphaeria ...sp. were pathogenic causing plant death over a period of up to 5 weeks. None of the other fungi caused significant disease although two out of nine plants inoculated with F. oxysporum died during the experimental period. Cation exchange between these protons and calcium in the medium is a possible cause of the calcium phosphate solubilizing activity. The relevance of these data to phosphate-solubilizing activity in natural environments is discussed.
