In this study, we evaluated ocular-surface changes and tear-film functions in patients with plaque-type psoriasis.
This study was performed on two groups. Group I included 100 eyes of 50 subjects ...with chronic plaque-type psoriasis whose diagnoses were confirmed with skin biopsy. Group II included 100 eyes of 50 healthy volunteers who were in the same age and sex distribution. Ocular-surface changes were evaluated on the cell content of the surface conjunctival epithelium by conjunctival impression cytology and tear-film functions by the Schirmer I test and break-up time (BUT).
Of the patients with psoriasis, 50% had a grade 0, 30% had a grade I, and 20% had a grade II conjunctival impression cytology differentiation compared with 95, 3, and 2%, respectively in the control group (p < 0.001). Snake-like appearance of nuclear chromatin in conjunctival epithelial cells was demonstrated in 12% of eyes in group I but in 2% of eyes in group II. The Schirmer's test results showed that average values were 10.1 +/- 5.8 mm in group I and 12.6 +/- 5.5 mm in group II (p > 0.001). The mean break-up time was 7.8 +/- 3.7 s in group I and 12.5 +/- 4.6 s in group II (p < 0.001).
We showed the early conjunctival changes in patients with psoriasis. According to these results, primary etiologic factors may contribute to ocular lesions in psoriasis.
Long-term BVRI photometric light curves of the pre-main sequence stars V977 Cep and V982 Cep during the period from 2000 October to 2016 August are presented. The stars are located in the vicinity of ...the reflection nebula NGC 7129. Our photometric data show that both stars exhibit strong photometric variability in all optical passbands, which is typical for Classical T Tauri stars. Using our observational data we analyze the reasons for the observed brightness variations. In the case of V977 Cep we identify previously unknown periodicity in its light curve.
8α-Amino-2,6-dimethylergoline is the key intermediate for the synthesis of a number of ergot derivatives under clinical development. They are structurally related to the better known lysergic acid ...and its derivative, the diethylamide (LSD). The use of lysergic acid or its isomer, paspalic acid, both of which are readily available by fermentation on an industrial scale, as a starting material for the synthesis of 8α-amino-2,6-dimethylergoline appears to be the obvious choice as the basic structural elements already exist. Whereas the transformation of the acid function to the amino moiety proceeded under well-established conditions, the introduction of the single methyl group posed a major challenge to the industrial chemist. Various methodologies are available to solve this problem, and the approach that involves direct metalation and methylation is found to be most suitable for up-scaling to multiton quantities. The importance of using on-line monitoring techniques (FT-IR) in process research and development will be exemplified by this report.
We present new data from BVRI photometric observations of five PMS stars during the period from April 2013 to July 2014. The stars are located in the field of NGC 7000/IC 5070 ("Gulf of Mexico") - a ...region with active star formation. The presented paper is a continuation of our long-term photometric investigations of the young stellar objects in this region. The long-term multicolor photometric observations of PMS stars are very important for their exact classification. Our results show that the studied stars exhibit different types of photometric variability in all bands. We tried to classify them using our data from the long-term photometry and data published by other authors.
A patient with intrusion of a scleral sponge implant after retinal reattachment surgery is described. Retinal incarceration occurred during primary retinal reattachment surgery and the patient ...underwent additional cryopexy and radial sponge implant. However, the retina remained detached and pars plana vitrectomy was performed with silicone oil endotamponade to reattach the retina. The interval between placement of the sderal buckle and development of intrusion was 3 months. The buckle was sutured to the sclera with mattress sutures. During the postoperative follow-up period, the intraocular pressure was elevated and controlled with topical antiglaucomatous medication. The encircling band was cut but left in place to avoid perforation, and the retina remained attached. Intrusion of a buckle after retinal reattachment surgery is a rare complication that usually does not require surgical intervention. Cutting the silicone band without removing it may be a treatment option.
Purpose: To evaluate the causes of failure to find retinal breaks, the anatomical and functional outcomes of patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RD) without detectable breaks (Group I), ...to compare the results with detectable breaks (Group II).
Methods: Forty‐five out of 258 eyes that had RD without detectable breaks were analysed retrospectively.
Results: The causes of failure to find retinal breaks were aphakia/pseudophakia in 22 eyes, small pupil without any eye disease in four eyes, corneal opacity in two eyes, cataract in two eyes, vitreous haze in two eyes, choroidal detachment in one eye, and unknown cause in 12 eyes. After a single scleral buckling procedure, anatomical re‐attachment of the retina successfully occurred in 62.2% of group I and 78.9% of group II patients. After repeated surgery, final anatomical success rates were 87.2% and 90.2%, respectively. The best corrected visual acuity was 6/60 or better in 53.9% in Group I and 52.5% in Group II.
Conclusion: The main cause of failure to find the retinal break was aphakia or pseudophakia. Although the rates of retinal reattachment in eyes without detectable breaks in primary buckling surgery was lower than detectable breaks and reoperations were required more frequently, final success rates were satisfactory and similar in both groups.
PURPOSE: Acute hydrops develops when Descemets membrane and the endothelium of the ectatic cornea separates to allow aqueous humor to enter the stroma. The current study was done to determine if ...penetrating keratoplasty (PK) in keratoconus patients with resolved hydrops has a poor prognosis. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 35 eyes of 35 patients with keratoconus who underwent PK after the resolution of acute hydrops (Group 1) and of 74 eyes of 69 patients who had PK without a previous history of acute hydrops (Group 2) was performed. The chi-square test was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: The mean age in Group 1 was 21.1 plus or minus 11.0 years. The mean age in Group 2 was 23.2 plus or minus 14.4 years. Vernal keratoconjunctivitis was present in 11 patients in Group 1 (31%) and in 12 (17.4%) patients in Group 2. Loose sutures were present in two patients (6%) in Group 1; both resulted in loose suture-related corneal neovascularization. Loose sutures developed in five patients (7%) in Group 2.
