This paper presents corrosion resistance results of a 12Cr ferritic ODS steel (Fe-12Cr-2W-0.5Zr-0.3Y2O3) fabricated via a powder metallurgy route as a prospective applicant for fuel cladding ...materials. In a spent nuclear fuel reprocessing facility, nitric acid serves as the primary solvent in the PUREX method. Therefore, fundamental immersion and electrochemical tests were conducted in various nitric acid solutions to evaluate corrosion degradation behavior. Additionally, polarization tests were also performed in 0.61 M of sodium chloride solutions (seawater-like atmosphere) as a more general, all-purpose procedure that produces valid comparisons for most metal alloys. For comparison, martensitic X46Cr13 steel was also examined under the same conditions. In general, the corrosion resistance of the 12Cr ODS steel was better than its martensitic counterpart despite a lower nominal chromium content. Potentiodynamic polarization plots exhibited a lower corrosion current and higher breakdown potentials in chloride solution in the case of the ODS steel. It was found that the corrosion rate during immersion tests was exceptionally high in diluted (0.1–3 M) boiling nitric acid media, followed by its sharp decrease in more concentrated solutions (>4 M). The results of the polarization plots also exhibited a shift toward more noble corrosion potential as the concentrations increased from 1 M to 4 M of HNO3. The results on corrosion resistance were supported by LSCM and SEM observations of surface topology and corrosion products.
In this paper, a new type of borasilsesquioxanes was synthesized through a condensation process, and its reactivity in catalytic hydrosilylation reactions with silanes, siloxanes, and silsesquioxanes ...was investigated. The obtained compounds were mostly obtained in >90% yield. They were fully characterized using spectroscopic (1H, 13C, 29Si NMR) and spectrometric (MALDI-TOF-MS) methods. The next stage of the research involved studying the thermogravimetric properties of the borasilsesquioxanes. By analyzing the different stages of decomposition using spectroscopic techniques (NMR, ATR-FTIR, Raman) and microscopic imaging, it was found that the structure of the borasilsesquioxanes changed during the pyrolysis process and polymer compounds were formed.
Abstract
In this work, the possibility of managing the rheological and mechanical parameters of composites based on PLA with the use of cubic structures of organofunctional spherosilicates was ...verified. To accurately observe the effect of various organosilicon modifier substitutions on changes in composites’ properties, we synthesized and used monofunctional octasubstituted derivatives as reference systems. The OSS/PLA systems were tested with concentrations of 0.1–2.5% (w/w) using extrusion to obtain a filament with a diameter of 1.75 mm. The printed samples underwent comprehensive tests including microscopic (SEM–EDS, optical microscope), rheological, thermal (TG, DSC, HDT), mechanical (impact and strength) as well as water contact angle tests. The work is interdisciplinary in nature and combines elements of organosilicon synthesis, materials engineering, and materials processing and characterization technology.
Abstract
We have developed a new effective route for obtaining (E)-vinyl-substituted silatranes via ruthenium-catalyzed silylative coupling of 1-allylsilatrane with olefins. Experimental research ...allowed us also to propose the mechanism of the process based on stoichiometric reactions.

With the development of 3D printing technology, there is a need to produce printable materials with improved properties, e.g., sliding properties. In this paper, the authors present the possibilities ...of producing composites based on biodegradable PLA with the addition of graphite. The team created composites with the following graphite weight contents: 1%, 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10%. Neat material was also subjected to testing. Tribological, mechanical, and chemical properties of the mentioned materials were examined. Measurements were also made after keeping the samples in ageing and climatic ovens. Furthermore, SEM observations of samples before and after friction tests were carried out. It was demonstrated that increasing graphite content caused a significant decrease in wear (PLA + 10% graphite had a wear rate three times lower than for a neat material). The addition of graphite did not adversely affect most of the other properties, but it ought to be noted that mechanical properties changed significantly. After conditioning in a climatic oven PLA + 10% graphite has (in comparison with neat material) 11% lower fracture stress, 47% lower impact strength, and 21% higher Young’s modulus. It can be certainly stated that the addition of graphite to PLA is a step towards obtaining a material that is low-cost and suitable for printing sliding spare parts.
This article presents the development of an automated three-point bending testing system using a robot to increase the efficiency and precision of measurements for PLA/TPU polymer blends as ...implementation high-throughput measurement methods. The system operates continuously and characterizes the flexural properties of PLA/TPU blends with varying TPU concentrations. This study aimed to determine the effect of TPU concentration on the strength and flexural stiffness, surface properties (WCA), thermal properties (TGA, DSC), and microscopic characterization of the studied blends.
In this study, microstructural evolution and phase transition of nickel-free Fe-18Cr-18Mn (wt. %) austenitic steel powders, induced by mechanical alloying, were investigated. X-ray diffraction, ...scanning electron microscopy, and microhardness testing techniques were used to observe the changes in the phase composition and particle size as functions of milling time. The first 30 h of mechanical alloying was performed in an argon atmosphere followed by nitrogen for up to 150 h. X-ray diffraction results revealed that the Fe-fcc phase started to form after 30 h of milling, and its fraction continued to increase with alloying time. However, even after 150 h of milling, weak Fe-bcc phase reflections were still detectable (~3.5 wt. %). Basic microstructure features of the multi-phase alloy were determined by X-ray profile analyses, using the whole powder pattern modeling approach to model anisotropic broadening of line profiles. It was demonstrated that the WPPM algorithm can be regarded as a powerful tool for characterizing microstructures even in more complicated multi-phase cases with overlapping reflections. Prolonging alloying time up to 150 h caused the evolution of the microstructure towards the nanocrystalline state with a mean domain size of 6 nm, accompanied by high densities of dislocations exceeding 1016/m2. Deformation-induced hardening was manifested macroscopically by a corresponding increase in microhardness to 1068 HV0.2. Additionally, diffraction data were processed by the modified Williamson–Hall method, which revealed similar trends of domain size evolutions, but yielded sizes twice as high compared to the WPPM method.
In this study, organosilicon compounds were used as modifiers of filaments constituting building materials for 3D printing technology. Polymethylhydrosiloxane underwent a hydrosilylation reaction ...with styrene, octadecene, and vinyltrimethoxysilane to produce new di- or tri-functional derivatives with varying ratios of olefins. These compounds were then mixed with silica and incorporated into the ABS matrix using standard processing methods. The resulting systems exhibited changes in their physicochemical and mechanical characteristics. Several of the obtained composites (e.g., modified with VT:6STYR) had an increase in the contact angle of over 20° resulting in a hydrophobic surface. The addition of modifiers also prevented a decrease in rheological parameters regardless of the amount of filler added. In addition, comprehensive tests of the thermal decomposition of the obtained composites were performed and an attempt was made to precisely characterize the decomposition of ABS using FT-IR and optical microscopy, which allowed us to determine the impact of individual groups on the thermal stability of the system.
This paper presents the impact of accelerated aging on selected mechanical and thermal properties of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) composites filled with sedimentary hybrid natural filler-Opoka rock. ...The filler was used in two forms: an industrial raw material originating as a subsieve fraction natural material, and a rock calcinated at 1000 °C for production of phosphorous sorbents. Fillers were incorporated with constant amount of 5 wt % of the resulting composite, and the material was subjected to accelerated weathering tests with different exposition times. The neat polypropylene and composites with calcium carbonate as a reference filler material were used for comparison. The aim of the research was to determine the possibility of using the Opoka rock as a new hybrid filler for polypropylene, which could be an alternative to the widely used calcium carbonate and silica. The thermal, mechanical, and structural properties were evaluated by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), tensile tests, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflectance (FTIR/ATR) prior to and after accelerated aging. As a result, it was found that the composites of polypropylene with Opoka were characterized by similar or higher functional properties and higher resistance to photodegradation compared to composites with conventional calcium carbonate. The results of measurements of mechanical properties, structural and surface changes, and the carbonyl index as a function of accelerated aging proved that Opoka was an effective ultraviolet (UV) stabilizer, significantly exceeding the reference calcium carbonate in this respect. The new hybrid filler of natural origin in the form of Opoka can therefore be used not only as a typical powder filler, but above all as a UV blocker/stabilizer, thus extending the life of polypropylene composites, especially for outdoor applications.
