Heavy metal contents were investigated in different organ tissues of Mullus barbatus (L., 1758) from Candarli Bay in the northeast Agean Sea in May 2004. Muscle, liver and gill tissue were analyzed ...for copper, lead, chromium, zinc and iron by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). The concentrations of copper in the muscle tissue ranged between 0.11 and 1.25, in liver 0.62 - 2.08, in gill 0.32 - 1.26; chromium in muscle 4.21 - 9.02, in gill 10.49 - 17.49, in liver 15.50 - 26.37; lead in muscle 1.20 - 9.74, in gill 3.18 - 11.82, in liver 5.30 - 12.52; zinc in muscle 0.36 - 0.97, in gill 1.16 - 2.57, in liver 2.08 - 6.19; iron in muscle 4.16 - 9.32, in gill 8.23 - 25.63, and in liver 5.43-58.45 ( mu g super(-1) wet weight). The order of the metal concentrations found in M. barbatus was Cu < Zn < Pb < Cr < Fe. According to statistical analysis, there were no significant relationship between individual lengths and weights of Mullus barbatus and bioaccumulation of heavy metals (ANOVA, p > 0.05). In this study, the mean values of Pb and Cr in muscle tissues were exceeded the legislation limits of FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) and MARA (T.C. Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs). In addition, Pb and Cr values in excess of permissible limits may be harmful to human health.

A total of 546 tub gurnard (Chelidonichthys lucernus L., 1758) were caught monthly by trawl surveys carried out between September 1999 and August 2000 in Izmir Bay (Aegean Sea). Fork lengths of ...females ranged from 12.7 to 34.4 cm, and of males from 14.1 to 29.9 cm. The female: male ratio was 1:0.52. The maximum age observed was 5 for females and 3 for males and the length-weight relationships were estimated as W=0.0051*L super(3.245) and W=0.0053*L super(3.237), respectively; the von Bertalanffy growth equations were L sub(t)=49.09(1-e super(-0.186(t+1.484))); L sub(t)=31.44(1-e super(-0.886(t+0.886))) and L sub(t)=52.12(1-e super(-0.163(t+1.609))) for females, males and both sexes, respectively. The growth performance index value ( Phi ) was computed as 2.646 for all specimens. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) values indicated that spawning occurred from late December (2.268) to the end of March (6.158). Vilicna duljina tijela kod zenki kretala se od 12.7 do 34.4 cm, a muzjaka od 14.1 do 29.9 cm. Odnos spolova muzjaka i zenki iznosio je 1:0.52. Najveca starosna dob ustanovljena za zenke bila je 5, a za muzjake 3, dok je duzinsko-maseni iznosio za zenke W=0.0051*L super(3.245) i za muzjake W=0.0053*L super(3.237). Vrijednosti dobivene von Bertalanffy-ijevom jednadzbom iznosile su Lt=49.09(1-e super(-0.186(t+1.484))) za zenke, L sub(t)=31.44(1-e super(-0.886(t+0.886))) za muzjake, te L sub(t)=52.12(1-e super(-0.163(t+1.609))) za oba spola. Black gobies, Gobius niger L., 1758, were sampled monthly between March 2003 and February 2004 in Izmir Bay involving 1149 specimens. Length distribution varied between 5.1 and 15.2 cm total length. ...Age determined from direct reading on otoliths was comprised from zero to five years. There were significant differences in mean lengths at age group for the two sexes, which did not allow the use of combined data. The parameters of the fitted Von Bertalanffy growth equation (with seasonal component, birth date on the 1st of January) were L^sub ∞^= 16.69 cm, k= 0.301 yr^sup -1^, t^sub 0^= -2.205 for males, and L^sub ∞^= 14.84 cm, k= 0.321 yr^sup -1^, t^sub 0^= -1.459 for females. Macroscopic examination of the gonads, and analysis of the monthly values of the gonadosomatic index, indicated that reproduction starts in March and lasts during October, with a maximum in March, followed by August and October. Individuals become sexually mature around 7.80 cm TL (a size that can be reached in less than 1 year) for females. In this population, the sex ratio (male:female) was 3.6:1. Stomach contents were mainly Mollusca (%IRI= 47.53), Crustacea (%IRI= 42.94), Polychaeta (%IRI= 8.26), Foreminifera (%IRI= 1.14) and Teleostei (%IRI= 0.13). PUBLICATION ABSTRACT

The present work describes biological features of 315 specimens of painted comber (Serranus scriba) caught monthly by commercial fishers in the Gulbahce Bay (Turkey) during the period of July 1999 to ...June 2000. It was determined that the painted comber resembled the age groups of I and VI. Fishes ranged from 8.1 to 23.2 cm in total length and from 10.90 to 197.74 g in weight. The length-weight relationship and condition factor of fishes were estimated as W=0.0127*L super(3.054), K=1.549 plus or minus 0.145 respectively. According to the von Bertalanffy, growth parameters for all individuals were: L sub( infinity )=31.18 cm, k=0.117 year super(-1) and t sub(o)=-1.690 year. The growth performance index value ( Phi ') was computed as 2.056 for all specimens. It has been determined that the food of S. scriba consisted mainly of crustaceans.
In this study, a total of 66 european sardine (Sardina pilchardus Walbaum, 1792) larvae, sampled between 0.5-1 meters by hand net from the coasts of Urla in Izmir Bay (Turkey) in January 2003, were ...investigated. Length and weight of fishes were distributed between 23.25 and 32.72 mm, 0.0041 and 0.09 g, respectively. Daily growth rings in their otoliths were counted from 35 to 60. The diameters and radius of the otoliths were measured as 158.11-423.35 mu m and 87.65-244.55 mu m, respectively. A good relationship was found between otolith diameters and daily growth rings (r=0.89) of the larvae.
In this study, a total of 1161 anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus, L., 1758), specimens collected from the purse-seine boats operating in Izmir Bay (Turkey) during the period from the January-December ...1997 were investigated. The fork length and the total weight of both sexes varied from 6.2-14.0 cm and from 1.46-22.47 g, respectively. Female:male ratio was 1:0.33 and maximum age group was determined as III. Most specimens belonged to age group I. The von Bertalanffy's growth equations in length and weight were L sub(t)=14.93(1-e- super(0.628(t-0.710))) and W sub(t)=26.17(1-e super(-0.628(t-0.710))) super(3.130) for all specimens. Length-weight relationship equation were estimated as W=0.0057*L super(3.130). Condition factors were determined between 0.449 and 0.839 for females, from 0.550-0.864 for males.
