The first English-language account of Ivan Morozov and his
ambition to build one of the world's greatest collections of modern
art A wealthy Moscow textile merchant, Morozov started
buying art in a ...modest way in 1900 until, on a trip to Paris, he
developed a taste for the avant-garde. Meticulous and highly
discerning, he acquired works by the likes of Monet, Pissarro, and
Cezanne. Unlike his friendly rival Sergei Shchukin, he collected
Russian as well as European art. Altogether he spent 1.5 million
francs on 486 paintings and 30 sculptures-more than any other
collector of the age. Natalya Semenova traces Morozov's life,
family, and achievements, and sheds light on the interconnected
worlds of European and Russian art at the turn of the century.
Morozov always intended to leave his art to the state-but with the
Revolution in 1917 he found himself appointed "assistant curator"
to his own collection. He fled Russia and his collection was later
divided between Moscow and St. Petersburg, only to languish in
storage for decades. Morozov: The Story of a Family and a Lost
Collection is being published to coincide with "The Morozov
Collection" exhibition at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris, in
October 2020.

In this extended essay Alexander Rappaport offers a sympathetic overview of the work of the Russian art historian, theorist, and translator Alexander Gabrichevsky (1891-1968). After studying at ...Moscow University, Gabrichevsky went on to teach there on the philosophy and theory of art. This topic was to become a lifetime preoccupation. In 1920 he joined the Institute of Artistic Culture, where he established a course in the spatial arts in collaboration with Vasiliy Kandinsky, and a year later Gabrichevsky was appointed deputy chair in the philosophy department at the Russian Academy of Artistic Sciences, where he further developed his didactic interest in the spatial arts. Although elected as a corresponding member of the Academy of Architecture of the USSR in 1941, he was condemned to academic exile shortly afterward and accused of cosmopolitanism in 1948. While this was an offense in Stalin's Soviet Union, the breadth of Gabrichevsky's polymath knowledge is powerfully revealed in Rappaport's text, which analyzes Gabrichevsky's concept of "Art Practition" as opposed to "Art Criticism." While the latter points to acquired knowledge, the former relates to the direct experience with the concrete art object and with the essence of things. Rappaport analyzes Gabrichevsky's extraordinary rich exploration of the genetic past of mankind under the headings "Art Practition," "History and Culture," "Individuation: Interior and Exterior," "Space and Mass," "The Body," "The Kernel and the Shell," "Gesture," and finally "The Magus and the Shamam."
