A claim for evidence of dark matter interactions in the DAMA experiment has been recently reinforced. We employ a new type of germanium detector to conclusively rule out a standard isothermal ...galactic halo of weakly interacting massive particles as the explanation for the annual modulation effect leading to the claim. Bounds are similarly imposed on a suggestion that dark pseudoscalars might lead to the effect. We describe the sensitivity to light dark matter particles achievable with our device, in particular, to next-to-minimal supersymmetric model candidates.
The Mu2e field mapping system is designed to produce high accuracy field maps of the detector solenoid used in the experiment. The data acquisition system is mobile and uses a self-propelled mapper ...with rotating arms equipped with 3D Hall probes. The measurements require not only accurate magnetic field readouts, but also accurate locations of all Hall probes while measuring data. The latter is accomplished by using the laser tracker to measure positions of several retroreflectors on the field mapper during data acquisition. The measurement process requires scanning the whole space inside the large solenoid and takes many hours to complete, which necessitates its full automation. The automation software includes control of the mapper, readout of Hall and NMR probes and control of a laser tracker, including prediction of retroreflector positions and execution of quality control checks. The software architecture and data acquisition hardware of the field mapping system are described, with special attention given to control of the laser tracker and its integration with the rest of the system.
We report on a new analysis of neutrino oscillations in MINOS using the complete set of accelerator and atmospheric data. The analysis combines the ν(μ) disappearance and ν(e) appearance data using ...the three-flavor formalism. We measure |Δm(32)(2)| = 2.28-2.46 × 10(-3) eV(2) (68% C.L.) and sin(2)θ(23) = 0.35-0.65 (90% C.L.) in the normal hierarchy, and |Δm(32)(2)| = 2.32-2.53 × 10(-3) eV(2) (68% C.L.) and sin(2)θ(23) = 0.34-0.67 (90% C.L.) in the inverted hierarchy. The data also constrain δ(CP), the θ(23} octant degeneracy and the mass hierarchy; we disfavor 36% (11%) of this three-parameter space at 68% (90%) C.L.
The NOvA experiment has seen a 4.4σ signal of ν¯e appearance in a 2 GeV ν¯μ beam at a distance of 810 km. Using 12.33×1020 protons on target delivered to the Fermilab NuMI neutrino beamline, the ...experiment recorded 27 ν¯μ→ν¯e candidates with a background of 10.3 and 102 ν¯μ→ν¯μ candidates. This new antineutrino data are combined with neutrino data to measure the parameters |Δm322|=2.48−0.06+0.11×10−3 eV2/c4 and sin2θ23 in the ranges from (0.53–0.60) and (0.45–0.48) in the normal neutrino mass hierarchy. The data exclude most values near δCP=π/2 for the inverted mass hierarchy by more than 3σ and favor the normal neutrino mass hierarchy by 1.9σ and θ23 values in the upper octant by 1.6σ.
Colocalized dark-field scattering, atomic force and surface-enhanced Raman scattering microscopic (DFSM, AFM and SERS) imaging of single gold nanoparticles is presented using a home-made instrument. ...A high numerical aperture total internal reflection objective allows us to probe the polarization-dependence of DFSM spectra associated with individual nanoparticles, which reveal their degree of anisotropy and reflect the morphology and orientation observed on AFM images. Under convenient light excitation, the SERS enhancement efficiency reaches 106-107 for the investigated gold nanorod and ellipsoid, in good agreement with the 103-105 electromagnetic enhancement factor assessed from finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) calculations and a 102-103 chemical contribution. FDTD calculations also confirm the possibility to reproduce nicely anisotropic behaviours disclosed by DFSM studies using SERS measurements.
A search for mixing between active neutrinos and light sterile neutrinos has been performed by looking for muon neutrino disappearance in two detectors at baselines of 1.04 and 735 km, using a ...combined MINOS and MINOS+ exposure of 16.36×10^{20} protons on target. A simultaneous fit to the charged-current muon neutrino and neutral-current neutrino energy spectra in the two detectors yields no evidence for sterile neutrino mixing using a 3+1 model. The most stringent limit to date is set on the mixing parameter sin^{2}θ_{24} for most values of the sterile neutrino mass splitting Δm_{41}^{2}>10^{-4} eV^{2}.
We present updated results from the NOvA experiment for νμ→νμ and νμ→νe oscillations from an exposure of 8.85×1020 protons on target, which represents an increase of 46% compared to our previous ...publication. The results utilize significant improvements in both the simulations and analysis of the data. A joint fit to the data for νμ disappearance and νe appearance gives the best-fit point as normal mass hierarchy, Δm322=2.44×10−3 eV2/c4, sin2θ23=0.56, and δCP=1.21π. The 68.3% confidence intervals in the normal mass hierarchy are Δm322∈2.37,2.52×10−3 eV2/c4, sin2θ23∈0.43,0.51∪0.52,0.60, and δCP∈0,0.12π∪0.91π,2π. The inverted mass hierarchy is disfavored at the 95% confidence level for all choices of the other oscillation parameters.
The inclusive electron neutrino charged-current cross section is measured in the NOvA near detector using 8.02 x 1020 protons-on-target (POT) in the NuMI beam. The sample of GeV electron neutrino ...interactions is the largest analyzed to date and is limited by ≃ 17% systematic rather than the ≃ 7.4% statistical uncertainties. The double-differential cross section in final-state electron energy and angle is presented for the first time, together with the single-differential dependence on Q2 (squared four-momentum transfer) and energy, in the range 1 GeV ≤ Eν < 6 GeV. Detailed comparisons are made to the predictions of the GENIE, GiBUU, NEUT, and NuWro neutrino event generators. The data do not strongly favor a model over the others consistently across all three cross sections measured, though some models have especially good or poor agreement in the single differential cross section vs. Q2.
