The experimental parameters were optimized and the analytical characteristics investigated. The developed assay was applied to real SARS-CoV-2 samples, and very good results that were in accordance with the real time polymerase chain reaction were obtained.

Objectives: Pneumonias are the most frequent infectious diseases that cause death at the age of 60 and over. In our study, we aimed to evaluate the clinical course and treatment success of elderly ...patients with pneumonia who were hospitalized and treated according to national guidelines. Methods: Between January 2017 and June 2018, the files of the patients with pneumonia were reviewed retrospectively. Demographic findings, symptoms, laboratory and radiological data, antibiotics, CURB-65 scores, duration of hospitalization and the ending type of stay were evaluated. Results: Of 105 patients; 71 were old (79.49±7.92 years), 34 were young (49.00±12.92 years). Symptoms were similar in both; comorbidities, multilober infiltrations and parapneumonic pleurisy were more common in the elderly. Clinically significant pathogen bacterial growth rates were 41.93% in young and 20% in the elderly. The mean duration of hospitalization was longer in the elderly (11.35±5.49 days). Acute renal failure and pleural fluid negatively affected the success of the treatment. There was a significant relationship between duration of hospitalization and CURB-65, age, smoking year, multilobar involvement, accompanying COPD, urea and albumin values. Conclusion: Although clinical findings of elderly patients with pneumonia who were hospitalized and treated in accordance with treatment guidelines were more severe than youngs, it was observed that this condition did not affect the success of treatment when hospitalization period was long. Duration of hospitalization in the elderly is prolonged due to various factors such as the worsening of underlying disease. Control of underlying diseases, appropriate nutrition and prevention of smoking will decrease the duration of hospitalization and treatment success will increase.

Even in series studies with high numbers, ...the amount of liquid in this area was measured with a maximum 1,4 cm in size. Our case report is the biggest HRPR in diameter. HRPRs have clinical significance since they are in the differential diagnosis with lymph nodes and mediastinal cysts. We present a 57-year-old patient with clinical and radiological findings.

We present a 68-years-old male patient with an atypical CT presentation in which GGOs are gathered around the areas of paraseptal emphysema accompanied by CT and clinical findings. This involvement is an unexpected pattern because of the atypical distribution of the GGO.
Introduction: Vertebroplasty is a minimally invasive method for the treatment of painful vertebrae fractures. Sementembolism, a rare complication of this method, is usually asymptomatic and does not ...require treatment. Anticoagulant therapy or surgical embolectomy is recommended when symptomatic. Case Presentation: A 41-year-old man applied to our clinic with chest pain and shortness of breath 3 days after percutaneous vertebroplasty that was performed for the fracture of thoracic 12 (Th12) vertebra due to a traffic accident. There were no pathological findings in his physical examination. He was normotensive, and room air oxygen saturation (SaO2) was 98%. A left lung lower zone branching radio-opacity was detected in postero anterior (PA) chest radiography. His hematological, biochemical and cardiac laboratory parameters were in normal values. There was no electrocardiographic abnormality. With suspicion of cement embolism, thorax CT-angiography was performed. The Th12 vertebrae had a compression fracture in the corpus and a hyperdense view of cement approximately 2.2 cm in diameter. In the right paravertebral space, the linear hyperdense line in the hemiazigos vein was noteworthy at the distance between Th 11, Th 12 and L1 vertebrae corpus (compatible with cement embolism). In addition, high density areas were observed in both lung parenchyma in right middle lobe, upper lobe in left lung and subsegmental branches in lower lobe medial area (cement embolism). There were no pathological findings or pleural effusion in the lung parenchyma. The patient was symptomatic for pulmonary embolism but he was hemodynamically stable. Echocardiography (Echo) revealed an ejection fraction of 60% and a mean pulmonary arterial pressure of 25mmHg. The removal of cement embolus was not considerated since the patient was hemodynamically stable, Echo was normal and there was not any sign of cement in the main pulmonary arteries. He started to the treatment with subcutaneus anticoagulant therapy and his respiratory symptoms were recovered quickly. After treatment during 3 months, we ended the anticoagulant therapy. Since then, the patient has been under control and has no complaints. Conclusion: Cement embolism may not be a mortal clinical situation if it is diagnosed early and treated appropriately to the location of mechanical occlusion in the pulmonary arteries. Another important point is that all patients should be controlled with routine chest X-ray after vertebroplasty, before discharging from hospital. There is not any consensus algorithm about the treatment of pulmonary cement embolism, but case reports and case series show some outcomes.
Objective: Sleep is important for metabolism and the immune system. Disturbed sleep may be a risk factor for poor recovery from diseases. Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia has been the ...most common cause of hospitalization in the last year. This study aimed to evaluate the sleep quality of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 pneumonia and the factors that affect their sleep quality. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study included patients with COVID-19 pneumonia who were hospitalized at a pandemic clinic. The demographic data, symptoms, laboratory parameters, and hospitalization duration were evaluated. After the first night of admission, the patients completed Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) and hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS). Results: This study included 105 patients, of whom 55 were with mild-moderate pneumonia and 50 with severe pneumonia. The mean value of the total PSQI score was 8.43±2.03 in the non-severe group and 12.64±2.24 in the severe group. Positive correlations were found between the total PSQI score and age, HAD-A score, HAD-D score, length of hospital stay, and ferritin. Negatively significant correlations were found between the PSQI score and leukocyte count, lymphocyte count, albumin, and oxygen saturation. Independent factors, such as disease severity, HADS scores, oxygen saturation, and dyspnea, were associated with the total PSQI score (R2=0.630). Conclusion: Patients who are hospitalized with COVID-19 pneumonia had poor sleep quality. Sleep quality was affected by disease severity. Anxiety and depression levels, oxygen saturation, and dyspnea are associated with sleep quality in these patients.

Idiopathic FOP is a rare type of COP. What we know on this subject is made up of a few clinical cases published in recent years. Our patient was admitted to the hospital with an intermittent coughing ...complaint that worsens over time. Due to a suspicion of malignancy, a radiological evaluation was requested including a PET-CT and a transbronchial biopsy was performed. Until the last part of our algorithm, the patient profile was clinically and radiologically in favor of the diagnosis of malignancy but, in the end, the diagnosis of FOP was fixed with a follow-up decision. In conclusion, FOP is a relatively new entity that should be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of malignancy.
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal dominant disease characterized by the dysfunction of exocrine secretory glands resulting from a mutation in the transmembrane regulator protein (CFTR) gene. As ...life expectancy increases in patients with cystic fibrosis secondary to advances in treatment, advanced age malignancies secondary to cystic fibrosis emerge. Especially, the frequency of gastrointestinal system malignancies and colon cancers increases with aging. Appendiceal tumors are a rare entity and constitute less than 1% of gastrointestinal tumors. We presented a villous adenoma encountered in an 18-year-old male patient with CF accompanied by clinical and radiological findings. Our case is the first reported appendiceal tumor that emerged in patients with cystic fibrosis.
The most common thoracic manifestation form of ankylosing spondylitis is apical fibrocystic changes. It is also known as apical fibrobullous disease (AFBD). The patient was diagnosed with ankylosing ...spondylitis before 9 years. He suffered COVID-19 infection and passed an intensive care period. However, post-covid fibrosis (PCF) atypically affected dominantly apical zones. If we had no sequential CT evaluations, our case could be easily confused with AFBD. On CT taken before COVID-19, the lung apex was normal. Thus, it was confirmed that there was no rheumatologic thoracic manifestation in the patient before suffering from COVID-19 pneumonia. PCF created similar changes as AFBD. Our case is the first reported paper on this topic.
Physicians do not adequately use their unique professional privilege to prevent patients from smoking. The aim of this study was to investigate the type and extent of advice given to patients by ...physicians of different medical specialties regarding smoking cessation.
In total, 317 volunteer physicians were included in this study. The participants rated their attitudes toward the smoking habits of their patients by completing a questionnaire. The approaches used to address the smoking habits of patients significantly differed among physicians working at polyclinics, clinics and emergency service departments (p<0.001). Physicians working at clinics exhibited the highest frequency of inquiring about the smoking habits of their patients, while physicians working at emergency service departments exhibited the lowest frequency.
Physicians from different medical specialties significantly differed in their responses. Physicians specializing in lung diseases, thoracic surgery, and cardiology were more committed to preventing their patients from cigarette smoking.
The role of physicians, particularly pulmonologists and thoracic surgeons, is critical in the fight against cigarette smoking. Promoting physician awareness of this subject is highly important in all other branches of medicine.
