What does a sacred text look like? Are religious books materially different from other books? Does materiality matter? This article deals with three different aspects of material variance attested ...amongst the Dead Sea Scrolls, Ancient Jewish religious text fragments, of which were found in the Judean Desert. I suggest that the substitution of the ancient Hebrew script by the everyday Aramaic script, also for Torah and other religious texts, was intentional and programmatic: it enabled the broader diffusion of scriptures in Hellenistic and Roman Judea. The preponderant use of parchment for religious texts rather than papyrus may be a marker of identity. The many small scrolls which contained only small parts of specific religious books (Genesis, Psalms) may have been produced as religious artefacts which express identity in the period when Judaism developed into a religion of the book.
A hitherto unidentified Qumran Cave 4 fragment should be assigned to 4Q96 (4QPs
), and attests to a textual variant which probably reflects a different word order in Ps 115:3.

This article identifies the Qumran Cave 4 manuscripts which Józef Milik labelled, more than fifty years ago, 4Q239 Pesher on the True Israel, 4Q240 Commentary on Canticles?, 4Q241 Fragments citing ...Lamentations, and 4Q349 Sale of Property. In addition two other manuscripts are identified: one tiny fragment preserves part of a copy of the Prayer of Manasseh (known from 4Q381), and an unidentified manuscript appears to be a communal confession.

Whereas scholarship generally assumes a fixed text of Jubilees by the second century B.C.E., this article explores the evidence for first-century B.C.E. revisions and Fortschreibungen. The combined ...evidence of 4Q216 and 4Q217 hints at a first-century B.C.E. addition to Jub. 1, and the absence of Jub. 23:32 from 4Q176 frag. 21 may indicate subsequent Fortschreibung. The article argues, following Milik, for a manuscript bisection of Jubilees, and for a reassignment of 4Q176 frag. 21 to 4Q221. An appendix presents the hitherto unpublished fragment 4Q221 frag. 20.
