ABSTRACT
We report the discovery and characterization of a pair of sub-Neptunes transiting the bright K-dwarf TOI-1064 (TIC 79748331), initially detected in the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite ...(TESS) photometry. To characterize the system, we performed and retrieved the CHaracterising ExOPlanets Satellite (CHEOPS), TESS, and ground-based photometry, the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS) high-resolution spectroscopy, and Gemini speckle imaging. We characterize the host star and determine $T_{\rm eff, \star }=4734\pm 67\,\mathrm{ K}$, $R_{\star }=0.726\pm 0.007\, \mathrm{ R}_{\odot }$, and $M_{\star }=0.748\pm 0.032\, \mathrm{ M}_{\odot }$. We present a novel detrending method based on point spread function shape-change modelling and demonstrate its suitability to correct flux variations in CHEOPS data. We confirm the planetary nature of both bodies and find that TOI-1064 b has an orbital period of Pb = 6.44387 ± 0.00003 d, a radius of Rb = 2.59 ± 0.04 R⊕, and a mass of $M_{\rm b} = 13.5_{-1.8}^{+1.7}$ M⊕, whilst TOI-1064 c has an orbital period of $P_{\rm c} = 12.22657^{+0.00005}_{-0.00004}$ d, a radius of Rc = 2.65 ± 0.04 R⊕, and a 3σ upper mass limit of 8.5 M⊕. From the high-precision photometry we obtain radius uncertainties of ∼1.6 per cent, allowing us to conduct internal structure and atmospheric escape modelling. TOI-1064 b is one of the densest, well-characterized sub-Neptunes, with a tenuous atmosphere that can be explained by the loss of a primordial envelope following migration through the protoplanetary disc. It is likely that TOI-1064 c has an extended atmosphere due to the tentative low density, however further radial velocities are needed to confirm this scenario and the similar radii, different masses nature of this system. The high-precision data and modelling of TOI-1064 b are important for planets in this region of mass–radius space, and it allow us to identify a trend in bulk density–stellar metallicity for massive sub-Neptunes that may hint at the formation of this population of planets.
Avian influenza A H6N1 virus is one of the most common viruses isolated from wild and domestic avian species, but human infection with this virus has not been previously reported. We report the ...clinical presentation, contact, and environmental investigations of a patient infected with this virus, and assess the origin and genetic characteristics of the isolated virus.
A 20-year-old woman with an influenza-like illness presented to a hospital with shortness of breath in May, 2013. An unsubtyped influenza A virus was isolated from her throat-swab specimen and was transferred to the Taiwan Centres for Disease Control (CDC) for identification. The medical records were reviewed to assess the clinical presentation. We did a contact and environmental investigation and collected clinical specimens from the case and symptomatic contacts to test for influenza virus. The genomic sequences of the isolated virus were determined and characterised.
The unsubtyped influenza A virus was identified as the H6N1 subtype, based on sequences of the genes encoding haemagglutinin and neuraminidase. The source of infection was not established. Sequence analyses showed that this human isolate was highly homologous to chicken H6N1 viruses in Taiwan and had been generated through interclade reassortment. Notably, the virus had a G228S substitution in the haemagglutinin protein that might increase its affinity for the human α2-6 linked sialic acid receptor.
This is the first report of human infection with a wild avian influenza A H6N1 virus. A unique clade of H6N1 viruses with a G228S substitution of haemagglutinin have circulated persistently in poultry in Taiwan. These viruses continue to evolve and accumulate changes, increasing the potential risk of human-to-human transmission. Our report highlights the continuous need for preparedness for a pandemic of unpredictable and complex avian influenza.

Hydrogenation of carbon dioxide (CO2) to methanol (MeOH) is an effective strategy for CO2 utilization. Because of a low equilibrium conversion of CO2 to MeOH at high temperature, development of ...efficient catalytic CO2 hydrogenation processes that operate under low reaction temperature is of extreme importance. Herein, we report that TiO2-supported Re (Re(1)/TiO2; Re = 1 wt %) promotes the selective hydrogenation of CO2 to MeOH (total TON based on Re = 44, MeOH selectivity = 82%) under mild conditions (p CO2 = 1 MPa; p H2 = 5 MPa; T = 150 °C). Both in terms of TON and methanol selectivity, the performance of Re(1)/TiO2 is superior to that of TiO2 catalysts loaded with other metals and to Re catalysts on other support materials. In addition, our investigations include the reaction mechanism and structure–activity relationship for the catalytic system used in this study, suggesting that relatively reduced Re species (oxidation state: 0–4) of subnanometer size serve as the catalytically active site for the formation of MeOH.
Purpose The relative frequency of individual minor salivary gland tumors (MSGTs) is not well documented in the literature. The aim of this study was to determine the range and demographics of all ...histologically diagnosed MSGTs in a northeastern Chinese population. Materials and Methods A total of 485 cases of MSGT were retrospectively studied. The files of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, School of Stomatology, China Medical University served as a source of material for this study. All epithelial tumors from minor salivary glands accessioned from August 2004 to April 2014 were analyzed for demographic features, anatomic location of tumors, and pathologic classification. Tumors were classified according to the 2005 World Health Organization classification of salivary gland tumors. Statistical analysis was performed using analysis of variance. Results MSGTs were identified in 485 (2.60%) of 18,670 accessed cases. There were 268 (55.26%) benign and 217 (44.74%) malignant tumors. Female outnumbered male patients (male-to-female ratio, 1:1.43). The mean ages of patients with benign and malignant MSGTs were 47.58 and 51.51 years, respectively. Pleomorphic adenoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma were the most frequent types of benign and malignant tumors, respectively. The palate was the most commonly affected site (64.74%), followed by the buccal mucosa (7.63%) and the tongue (5.98%). Conclusions From the results of this study and a review of the literature, it is suggested that MSGTs in the northeastern Chinese population may be characterized by a higher incidence of MSGTs than in the populations of other reviewed regions, a higher incidence of myoepithelioma, a rarer occurrence of polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma, and an absence of canalicular adenoma occurrence.
Antibiotic-resistant pathogens pose a significant threat to human health. Several dispersal mechanisms have been described, but transport of both microbes and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) via ...atmospheric particles has received little attention as a pathway for global dissemination. These atmospheric particles can return to the Earth's surface via rain or snowfall, and thus promote long-distance spread of ARGs. However, the diversity and abundance of ARGs in fresh snow has not been studied and their potential correlation with particulate air pollution is not well explored. Here, we characterized ARGs in 44 samples of fresh snow from major cities in China, three in North America, and one in Europe, spanning a gradient from pristine to heavily anthropogenically influenced ecosystems. High-throughput qPCR analysis of ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) provided strong indications that dissemination of ARGs in fresh snow could be exacerbated by air pollution, severely increasing the health risks of both air pollution and ARGs. We showed that snowfall did effectively spread ARGs from point sources over the Earth surface. Together our findings urge for better pollution control to reduce the risk of global dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes.
TANK binding kinase 1 (TBK1) regulates IFN-I, NF-κB, and TNF-induced RIPK1-dependent cell death (RCD). In mice, biallelic loss of TBK1 is embryonically lethal. We discovered four humans, ages 32, 26, ...7, and 8 from three unrelated consanguineous families with homozygous loss-of-function mutations in TBK1. All four patients suffer from chronic and systemic autoinflammation, but not severe viral infections. We demonstrate that TBK1 loss results in hypomorphic but sufficient IFN-I induction via RIG-I/MDA5, while the system retains near intact IL-6 induction through NF-κB. Autoinflammation is driven by TNF-induced RCD as patient-derived fibroblasts experienced higher rates of necroptosis in vitro, and CC3 was elevated in peripheral blood ex vivo. Treatment with anti-TNF dampened the baseline circulating inflammatory profile and ameliorated the clinical condition in vivo. These findings highlight the plasticity of the IFN-I response and underscore a cardinal role for TBK1 in the regulation of RCD.

TBK1 signals activation of antiviral defenses and controls TNF-mediated inflammation. Deletion of TBK1 in mice is embryonically lethal. Humans lacking TBK1 expression survive and have adequate antiviral function. Instead, these individuals suffer from inflammatory pathology driven by sensitivity to TNF-induced cell death that can be effectively treated with anti-TNF therapeutics.
ABSTRACT
We report the discovery of a planetary system orbiting TOI-763(aka CD-39 7945), a V = 10.2, high proper motion G-type dwarf star that was photometrically monitored by the TESS space mission ...in Sector 10. We obtain and model the stellar spectrum and find an object slightly smaller than the Sun, and somewhat older, but with a similar metallicity. Two planet candidates were found in the light curve to be transiting the star. Combining TESS transit photometry with HARPS high-precision radial velocity (RV) follow-up measurements confirm the planetary nature of these transit signals. We determine masses, radii, and bulk densities of these two planets. A third planet candidate was discovered serendipitously in the RV data. The inner transiting planet, TOI-763 b, has an orbital period of Pb = 5.6 d, a mass of Mb = 9.8 ± 0.8 M⊕, and a radius of Rb = 2.37 ± 0.10 R⊕. The second transiting planet, TOI-763 c, has an orbital period of Pc = 12.3 d, a mass of Mc = 9.3 ± 1.0 M⊕, and a radius of Rc = 2.87 ± 0.11 R⊕. We find the outermost planet candidate to orbit the star with a period of ∼48 d. If confirmed as a planet, it would have a minimum mass of Md = 9.5 ± 1.6 M⊕. We investigated the TESS light curve in order to search for a mono transit by planet d without success. We discuss the importance and implications of this planetary system in terms of the geometrical arrangements of planets orbiting G-type stars.
Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are transcripts that are 200 bp or longer, do not encode proteins, and potentially play important roles in eukaryotic gene regulation. However, the number, ...characteristics and expression inheritance pattern of lncRNAs in maize are still largely unknown.
By exploiting available public EST databases, maize whole genome sequence annotation and RNA-seq datasets from 30 different experiments, we identified 20,163 putative lncRNAs. Of these lncRNAs, more than 90% are predicted to be the precursors of small RNAs, while 1,704 are considered to be high-confidence lncRNAs. High confidence lncRNAs have an average transcript length of 463 bp and genes encoding them contain fewer exons than annotated genes. By analyzing the expression pattern of these lncRNAs in 13 distinct tissues and 105 maize recombinant inbred lines, we show that more than 50% of the high confidence lncRNAs are expressed in a tissue-specific manner, a result that is supported by epigenetic marks. Intriguingly, the inheritance of lncRNA expression patterns in 105 recombinant inbred lines reveals apparent transgressive segregation, and maize lncRNAs are less affected by cis- than by trans-genetic factors.
We integrate all available transcriptomic datasets to identify a comprehensive set of maize lncRNAs, provide a unique annotation resource of the maize genome and a genome-wide characterization of maize lncRNAs, and explore the genetic control of their expression using expression quantitative trait locus mapping.
Abstract Background We aimed to investigate the association between antidepressant use and the risk of hospitalization for acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Methods A case-crossover study was ...conducted using a nationwide population-based sample from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. A total of 18,631 patients with incident AMI were included in this study. The effects of antidepressant use as well as that of various classes (including tricyclic or tetracyclic antidepressants; selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors; or serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors), doses, and receptor-binding profiles of the antidepressants on AMI were assessed. Conditional logistic regression models with adjustment for potential confounding factors were applied to determine the effects of antidepressant use on the risk of AMI during case and control time periods of 15, 30, and 60 days, respectively. The modifiable effects of age, gender, and comorbidity were evaluated by stratified analysis. Results Antidepressant use was not associated with the risk of AMI (adjusted odds ratio AOR = 1.04; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.88–1.24). Likewise, neither the class, dose, nor the binding affinity of serotonin transporter or norepinephrine transporter was associated with AMI risks, and there was no modifying effect of age, gender, or comorbid medical condition on the association between antidepressant use and AMI. Conclusions Use of antidepressant drugs was not associated with the risk of AMI.
We combine high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope/WFC3 images with multi-wavelength photometry to track the evolution of structure and activity of massive galaxies at redshifts z = 1.4-3 in two ...fields of the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey. We detect compact, star-forming galaxies (cSFGs) whose number densities, masses, sizes, and star formation rates (SFRs) qualify them as likely progenitors of compact, quiescent, massive galaxies (cQGs) at z = 1.5-3. In summary, we propose two evolutionary tracks of QG formation: an early (z > or ~ 2), formation path of rapidly quenched cSFGs fading into cQGs that later enlarge within the quiescent phase, and a late-arrival (z < o ~ 2) path in which larger SFGs form extended QGs without passing through a compact state.
