Abstract
Langmuir probes with RF compensation are used for measurements of electron concentration, electron temperature and the DC value of plasma potential in RF discharges. In order to obtain all ...the RF components of plasma potential, simple probes without RF compensation are used. However, it has been believed that these uncompensated probes can not be used for determination of the DC value of plasma potential and of electron concentration and temperature, since their VA characteristics is distorted by the RF current. Consequently, the evaluation of data measured with uncompensated probes was not possible without additional measurement with a RF compensated Langmuir probe. This contribution analyzes the possibility to use uncompensated probes not only for measurement of RF components of plasma potential, but also for measurement of the DC component of plasma potential, electron concentration and electron temperature.
Cholelithiasis is more common in patients with Crohn's disease (CD) than in the healthy population. The aim here was to examine risk factors for cholelithiasis in a cohort of CD patients and to ...compare the prevalence of cholelithiasis in a cohort of CD patients with that in a control group. This was a single-center retrospective case-control study. The cohort comprised all consecutive CD patients who underwent abdominal ultrasound from January 2007 to January 2018. The control group comprised age- and gender-matched non-CD patients referred for upper gastrointestinal tract dyspepsia. The study included 238 CD patients and 238 controls. The prevalence of cholelithiasis in the CD and control groups was 12.6 % and 9.2 %, respectively (risk ratio (RR), 1.36; p=0.24). Univariate analysis revealed that cholelithiasis was associated with multiple risk factors. Multivariate analysis identified age (OR, 1.077; 95 % CI, 1.043-1.112; p<0.001) and receipt of parenteral nutrition (OR, 1.812; 95 % CI, 1.131-2.903; p=0.013) as independent risk factors for cholelithiasis in CD patients. The prevalence of cholelithiasis in CD patients was higher than that in the control group; however, the difference was not statistically significant. Age and receipt of parenteral nutrition were independent risk factors for cholelithiasis in CD patients.
A method for the measurement of plasma potential waveforms is presented that is based on measurement with a high-impedance probe and an electric model of the sheath around the probe. The method was ...verified and compared with methods that were previously used for measurement of the temporal development of plasma potential during an RF period of capacitive discharges. The sensitivity of the method to the values of required input parameters (mean plasma potential value, electron concentration and temperature) was analyzed and it was found that with a lower precision, the method can be used even without the knowledge of these input parameters. Finally, plasma potential waveforms were measured in a low-pressure capacitively coupled discharge. In agreement with theoretical models, the generation of higher harmonic frequencies of plasma potential and their sensitivity to electron concentration were observed.
It is well known that smoking is the risk factor in the development and clinical course of Crohn s disease (CD), but on the other hand, smoking is a protective factor against ulcerative colitis (UC). ...The pathways that are influenced by smoking in CD and UC are poorly understood. The aim of our study was to analyse the influence of smoking on the mRNA expression of cytokines in mucosa in patients with CD and UC. We performed a cross-sectional study. The cohort consisted of 86 IBD patients (48 CD patients and 38 UC patients) and took place at the IBD Centre at the University Hospital Bratislava-Ružinov. We took the demographic and clinical data of each patient, including information about their smoking habits. We performed a colonoscopy on each patient and took biopsies from both inflamed and non-inflamed sigma (CD, UC) and terminal ileum (CD). mRNA was extracted from mucosal biopsy samples for each cytokine and was normalized to a housekeeping gene (GAPDH). Finally, we compared the mRNA expression of target cytokines in the mucosa of smokers and non-smokers in IBD patients. Smokers with Crohn s disease have a significantly higher mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokine TNF ? (p=0.003) in inflamed mucosa in sigma compared with non-smokers. In smokers with ulcerative colitis, we observed significantly higher mRNA expression of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL 10 (p=0.022) in non-inflamed mucosa of sigma. Similarly, smokers with UC have a significantly decreased mRNA expression of cytokine TLR 2 (p=0.024) and CCR1 (p=0.049) in non-inflamed mucosa of sigma. Based on our results, smoking has a positive influence on cessation and the clinical course of UC due to the stimulation of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL 10 in mucosa. On the other hand, smokers with CD have a higher expression of pro-inflammatory cytokine TNF ?, which could be associated with a worsening of the disease and response to therapy.
Complex flow features within rocket nozzles can exert significant influence on both the dynamics and safety of rockets during flight. Specifically, under over-expanded flow conditions, during, low ...altitude flight, random, often large side loads can appear within nozzles. While significant research has focused on this classical problem, due to the high nozzle pressure ratios (NPR) extant across rocket nozzles, most experimental work: (1) has focused on measuring wall pressure distributions under conditions when side loads appear, (2) has been carried out in large government or industrial test facilities, and (3) has only provided limited, though crucially important, visualization data. This short paper describes the construction and operation of a very simple, low cost test apparatus that allows imaging of flow features within planar nozzles, under the high NPR conditions characteristic of medium-to-large rockets. Representative color Schlieren images of flow shock structure obtained within the test apparatus are also presented and briefly described.

A novel approach for designing the next generation of vertex detectors foresees to employ wafer-scale sensors that can be bent to truly cylindrical geometries after thinning them to thicknesses of ...20–40 μm. To solidify this concept, the feasibility of operating bent MAPS was demonstrated using 1.5cm×3cm ALPIDE chips. Already with their thickness of 50µm, they can be successfully bent to radii of about 2cm without any signs of mechanical or electrical damage. During a subsequent characterisation using a 5.4GeV electron beam, it was further confirmed that they preserve their full electrical functionality as well as particle detection performance.
In this article, the bending procedure and the setup used for characterisation are detailed. Furthermore, the analysis of the beam test, including the measurement of the detection efficiency as a function of beam position and local inclination angle, is discussed. The results show that the sensors maintain their excellent performance after bending to radii of 2cm, with detection efficiencies above 99.9% at typical operating conditions, paving the way towards a new class of detectors with unprecedented low material budget and ideal geometrical properties.
We tried to determine whether mineral-equivalent measurements that were obtained using computed tomography could be used to predict the mechanical properties of vertebral trabecular bone. Vertebral ...bodies that had been obtained during routine autopsy were evaluated by computed tomography. The mechanical properties of the vertebral trabecular bone were determined by subjecting cylindrical specimens to simple compression until failure occurred. The ultimate strength and elastic modulus were determined from load time curves, using constant displacement rate loading. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry was used to determine the weight per cent calcium of each specimen, and quantitative light microscopy was used to determine area fraction bone. Significant positive correlations were found between the observed mechanical properties of the trabecular bone and the equivalent mineral density as measured by computed tomography. Compressive strength (r = 0.720), elastic modulus (r = 0.574), trabecular calcium density (r = 0.780), and area fraction bone (r = 0.579) were all correlated with the equivalent mineral density.
