Estudos sísmicos revelam paleocanais que dissecaram a região costeira do Rio Grande do Sul. Dois sistemas de paleocanais foram estabelecidos para a área da Lagoa dos Patos. O preenchimento do sistema ...de canais mais jovem é Holoceno. Ele é relacionado à última regressão marinha do Pleistoceno, correspondendo ao estágio isotópico 2 do oxigênio. O processo de incisão e preenchimento do sistema mais antigo é relacionado ao evento regressivo-transgressivo anterior, correspondendo aos estágios isotópicos do oxigênio 6-5. As linhas de paleodrenagens foram conectadas àquelas previamente reconhecidas na plataforma continental. À montante, elas podem ser conectadas ao curso atual dos rios Camaquã e Jacuí. As redes de paleodrenagens reconhecidas na zona costeira representam um sistema de ligação entre a bacia de drenagem continental e sítios deposicionais na bacia marginal, dissecando a plataforma continental exposta durante um evento de regressão forçada. A descarga do sistema mais jovem alimentou sistemas deltaicos instalados da borda da plataforma durante o período de mar baixo que perdurou até o final da última glaciação. A última transgressão afogou e preencheu os vales costeiros, fechando a ligação entre a Lagoa dos Patos e o Oceano Atlântico. Os sistemas de paleodrenagens aqui considerados devem ter desempenhado um papel importante na arquitetura, distribuição faciológica e no espaço de acomodação da bacia marginal durante as oscilações do nível marinho no Quaternário.
Investigations of headland sand bypassing are still an under-reported subject in the literature. This paper aims to understand the contribution of currents forced by different mechanisms such as ...tides, winds (i.e. local wind acting over the ocean surface generating currents, without considering wave generation) and waves (as they approach/break on the coast) to headland sand bypassing. The study was carried out in an area comprising a series of seven headlands with varying wave exposure due to changes in shoreline orientation and increasing tidal influence close to a relatively large bay. This paper uses a calibrated and validated process-based model (Delft3D) to simulate a series of scenarios including spring and neap tides during flood and ebb conditions and a range of wind and wave scenarios that encompass both average and extreme conditions. The results indicate that waves are the main driving force for the headland bypassing as they transport sand at rates two orders of magnitude higher than tide- or wind-driven sediment transport. The tide-driven currents can only transport sediment during spring tides in locations where the currents are intensified. It is also demonstrated that the wave direction plays an important role in sediment transport. In exposed areas with larger headlands a combination of wave directions is required to first transport sediment offshore (out of the beach) and secondly to transport sediment alongshore and back to the next beach. Whereas in areas with little variation in wave direction exposure, the same oblique wave direction is responsible for the entire headland bypassing process. This is the first time the contribution of tide-, winds- and wave-generated sediment transport to headland bypassing have been studied.

This paper presents a comprehensive study of headland bypassing around seven headlands with different orientations and degrees of wave and tide-induced current exposure, located on the northern shore ...of Santa Catarina island, southern Brazil. It encompasses an extensive dataset including detailed in situ measurements of bathymetry, beach profiles, sediment transport (traps), waves, currents and tides. The entrained sediment decreased in magnitude towards the more sheltered coast while maintaining comparable sediment grain distributions, supporting the hypothesis of a connection between beaches. Based on in situ measurements, a numerical model was calibrated (waves, currents and tides) and validated, with errors representing 11% of the magnitude of the measurements. Furthermore, three sediment transport formulae were tested to identify the one that best reproduced the processes at the study site. A model using tides, winds and full wave spectra as input was run to identify the general (net) trend of annual sediment transport in the study area aiming to identify if/where headland bypassing occurs. The results show that headland sand bypassing does occur in the study area confirming the anticlockwise sediment transport pathway. The present work highlights the role of sediment bypassing on embayed-headland bound beaches, which are usually considered to be closed cells.

Coarse shore/berm ridges comprising mollusk shells are peculiar morphological features occurring in some beaches globally, generally wave-built, generated during storms and high tides. Studies ...regarding the formation of these shelly shore ridges using wave flume experiments (physical modeling) do not provide a detailed analysis of their morphological evolution and depositional features. A bioclastic beach profile with a constant dip, formed by mollusk shells (whole and fragmented ones, DSV-50 = 4.5 mm) of bivalves and gastropods, was subjected to a storm wave condition simulated in a two-dimensional flume with a scale reduction factor of 1/20. A decimeter-scale shelly shore ridge was successfully formed by swash bar emergence. The seaward surface was steeper than the landward slope. The bar was progressively built by swash currents that accumulated shells along the shoreline. According to Dean's function, the equilibrium beach profile displays a good fit for coefficient A, as related to the settling velocity of the bioclasts. The power of m is lesser in the equilibrium beach than that in beaches composed of siliciclastic sand. Three patterns of shell organization and pore framework represent the back, top, and frontal sectors of the ridge. The ridge front includes poorly organized shell particles of dense packing. The crest comprises bioclast beds of uniformly obliquely oriented, densely packed particles. Back ridge sediments exhibit loosely packed moderate shell organization. The morphological evolution of the bioclastic ridge formed in the flume closely resembled bioclastic beach sediments. The depositional pattern in the flume ridge was directly related to the energy of breaking waves and associated swash-current energy.

The Villarino Peninsula, located in the San Matías Gulf, northern region of Argentine Patagonia, San Antonio Este, is characterized by Pleistocene and recent Holocene sedimentary deposits that ...provide a substrate for the accumulation of bioclastic sediments. The study of prograding paleo-beach ridges and the recent beach ridge at Punta Verde Beach, situated on the southern side of Villarino Peninsula, aimed to propose an evolutionary depositional model for the ridge sequence and to estimate the rate of progradation and relative sea level fall (RSL). The interpretation of the ridge sequence was conducted with field surveys using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and GPS-RTK systems. Satellite imagery of natural resources and field data were employed in processing the radargrams and generating a Digital Elevation Model (DEM), leading to the identification of 33 beach ridges over a length of 681 m. Radiocarbon dating of shell samples from the crest of the beach ridge sequence yielded ages ranging from 5455 ± 28 cal Years BP to 2183 ± 123 cal Years BP, corresponding to the Middle to Recent Holocene, and the present day for the recent beach ridge. The average progradation speed of the system was estimated at 70 mm/year, and the average rate of relative sea level fall was estimated at 2 mm/year. Understanding coastal processes, geometric parameters, and the shape of the beach ridges allowed for their characterization as prograding Holocene depositional systems, associated with fluctuations in relative sea level driven by glacio-eustatic events, components of astronomical tides, wave action, particularly storm waves, as well as antecedent topography and the positive or neutral sediment input balance.

Little research has been undertaken into sediment dynamics in lakes, and most of it only analyses particular aspects such as the texture of the sediments. In this study, the characteristics of the ...wave field in Guaíba Lake are investigated. The parameters significant wave height (Hs), period (T) and direction of wave propagation are examined together with their relation to the resuspension of sediments at the bottom. For this purpose, the mathematical model SWAN (Simulating Waves Nearshore) has been validated and employed. The results pointed out that the highest waves modeled reached 0.55 m at a few points in the lake, particularly when winds were blowing from the S and SE quadrants with an intensity over 7 m.s-1. Generally speaking, waves follow wind intensity and direction patterns, and reach maximum height in about 1 to 2 hours after wind speed peaks. Whenever winds were stronger, waves took some 2 hours to reach 0.10 m. However, with weak to moderate winds, the waves took around 3 hours to achieve this value in significant wave height. In addition to speed and direction, wind regularity proved relevant in generating and propagating waves on Lake Guaíba. In conclusion the lake's sediment environments were mapped and classified as follows: 1) Depositional Environments (51% of the lake); 2) Transitional Environments (41%); and 3) Erosional or Non-Depositional Environments (8%). As a contribution to the region's environmental management, elements have been created relating to the concentration of suspended particulate matter.
Pesquisas referentes à dinâmica sedimentar em lagos são escassas e a maioria trata da distribuição e textura dos sedimentos, sendo raras aquelas que fazem menção ao padrão de ondas e suas relações com a ressuspensão destes sedimentos e suas consequências. Este trabalho analisa as características das ondas incidentes no Lago Guaíba (Brasil) por meio da utilização do SWAN (Simulating Waves Nearshore) e suas relações com a ressuspensão de sedimentos junto ao fundo. Os resultados mostraram que as maiores ondas incidentes atingiram 0.55 m, particularmente quando de ventos do quadrante S e SE e com velocidades maiores que 7 m/s. Em termos gerais, as características das ondas seguem os padrões de intensidade e direção dos ventos, atingindo seus máximos valores aproximadamente 1 ou 2 horas após a velocidade de pico dos ventos. Em conclusão, os ambientes de sedimentação do lago foram mapeados e classificados da seguinte forma: 1) Ambientes Depositionais (51% da área do lago); 2) Ambientes Transicionais (41%); e 3) Ambientes Erosionais ou de não deposição (8%).Como forma de contribuir à gestão ambiental da região, foram gerados subsídios referentes ao potencial de concentração de material particulado em suspensão.
A morfologia de canais é resultado do ambiente em que se encontram, assim como de todas variáveis físicas atuantes. Se a desembocadura está situada em zonas costeiras, a tendência à instabilidade é ...amplificada pelo próprio meio. Neste artigo são apresentados os resultados do estudo morfodinâmico do canal de comunicação entre a Lagoa do Peixe e o Oceano Atlântico, localizado no Parque Nacional da Lagoa do Peixe, litoral médio do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Também é medida a variabilidade da linha de praia adjacente ao parque. Com o objetivo de determinar a classifica- ção do canal e sua dinâmica natural, foram utilizados uma série de 47 anos de imagens Landsat (1973 – 2009), dados de precipitação da Agencia Nacional de Águas e equações. A interpretação da série temporal e os cálculos das médias de precipitação permitiram descrever o canal da Lagoa do Peixe como um canal de maré, com mecanismo de assoreamento morfodinâmico influenciado pelo regime de precipitação pluviométrica. Os resultados das equações indicaram como fatores determinantes à sua oclusão o prisma de maré e transporte e deposição sedimentar em frente a desembocadura, associados à deriva litorânea de padrão bidirecional da área de estudo. Sua desembocadura possui caráter intermitente e é instável quanto ao seu posicionamento e geometria. A mobilidade da linha de praia adjacente ao Parque Nacional da Lagoa do Peixe foi verificada pelo método de pontos extremos, pixel a pixel, entre duas imagens Landsat de mesmo mês, uma de 1987 e outra de 2009, sendo constatada erosão ao sul da desembocadura do canal da Lagoa do Peixe e acreção ao norte da mesma.
A comunicação de corpos lagunares com o oceano ocorre através de canais de maré (tidal inlets), os quais constituem-se em importantes feições na troca de sedimentos. Algumas vari- áveis (prisma de ...maré, geometria do canal, etc.) controlam sua morfodinâmica e podem modificar sua posição geográfica. O conhecimento dos fatores que comandam sua estabilidade é de extrema relevância para gerenciar a costa e conservar o ambiente lagunar. Neste trabalho foi analisada a estabilidade da desembocadura da Lagoa de Tramandaí, com base em dados hidrodinâmicos, sedimentológicos e morfológicos integrados em uma análise espaço-temporal. A desembocadura desta laguna está localizada entre as praias de Tramandaí e Imbé (litoral norte do Rio Grande do Sul) e encontra-se fixada com apenas uma estrutura tipo guia-corrente ao longo da margem esquerda. A metodologia utilizada consistiu de levantamento batimétrico, técnicas de geoprocessamento e cálculos das relações empíricas de estabilidade. Os dados obtidos permitiram observar que anteriormente à fixação da margem esquerda do canal, a migração da desembocadura acompanhava a direção preferencial da deriva litorânea, para NE. A análise das relações de estabilidade física permitiu concluir que o canal apresentava forte instabilidade antes da obra de fixação da desembocadura. Após a obra do guia-corrente, a seção transversal mínima foi fixada e não existem registros de assoreamento.

Shoreline change analysis and insight into the sediment transport path along Santa Catarina ...Island north shore, Brazil. This paper presents a shoreline change analysis applied to identify the sediment transport path involving nine adjoining beaches, including dunes and spits, located along the microtidal eastern and northern shores of Santa Catarina Island (Brazil) and extending 50 km from Barra-Moçambique to Daniela. A data set was comprised of aerial images from 1957, 1978, 1998, 2002, 2007, and 2010, and the 2012 shoreline position measured with real-time kinematic GPS, topobathymetric data set, and a 60-year water-level time series. The images were rectified and the shoreline position for each year was extracted. The average errors (ranging from 1 to 9.8 m) of the rectification process as well as the horizontal tide-related errors (varying from 8.3 ± 2.6 m to 14.9 ± 0.6 m) were calculated within a confidence level of 95%. Two complementary approaches were used: (1) general trends analysis using linear regression rate method and (2) shoreline behaviour statistically analysed by Euclidean distance and year-to-year analysis. The results indicate an anticlockwise longshore transport between a series of beaches with variable orientation and separated by headlands, including a dune overpassing from Santinho delivering ∼10,000 m3 y−1 to Ingleses, and headland bypassing leading to the development of three spits along the protected part of the study area that have possibly been nourished by subaqueous sand transport from the updrift beaches. During its development the Ponta das Canas spit grew ∼7000 m3 y−1, controlling the sediment availability downdrift. As the spit grows it traps sediment and the downdrift area retreats; on the other hand, when the spit merges to the coast the sand spreads and the downdrift beaches prograde.

Os fenômenos da ressurgência e subsidência costeira em regiões com pequenas profundidades ainda são pouco compreendidos no litoral brasileiro. O presente trabalho visa obter um melhor entendimento ...das condições oceanográficas em águas rasas, tais como as forçantes das correntes costeiras e das oscilações do nível do mar. Um perfilador acústico de ondas e correntes, AWAC, da marca Nortek, foi fundeado a 11 m de profundidade ao largo da praia de Tramandaí, programado para registrar uma série contínua de dados de ondas e correntes, com início em 17 de dezembro de 2013 e término em 13 de março de 2014 (período do verão). Os resultados indicaram que a circulação tem inversões de curto período no sentido das correntes, ora para S, ora para N. Também foi possível verificar velocidades máximas de 0,6 e 0,9 m.s-1 no fundo e em superfície, respectivamente. Ademais, um fluxo resultante para S, de aproximadamente 0,018 m.s-1 foi calculado com base no perfil médio da coluna de água. Além disso, foram encontrados indicativos de ressurgência e subsidência costeira, através das análises da direção do vento e das correntes, das variações na temperatura da água e também do nível médio do mar.
