While partner engagement has long been a part of national strategies, the United States has only episodically relied on its military forces to play significant roles in this fourth task. Because of ...the conventional military threats, the level of international stability ensured by competing superpowers, and a low extremist group threat, the U.S. military did not put much effort into persuading partner nations to build their security forces' capacities.

(1)Rhythmic sternal pressure produced no tidal exchange in 30 curarized adults with a natural airway and the head unsupported, since lack of backward tilt of the head caused hypopharyngeal ...obstruction by the tongue. Even when the shoulders were elevated, in order to make the head assume a backward tilt, sternal compressions produced no tidal exchange in 16 of 30 subjects.(2)With a tracheal tube by-passing the upper airway obstruction, sternal compression produced an average tidal volume of 156 ml. (0 to 390 ml.).(3)In patients with cardiac arrest closed chest cardiac massage produced no tidal exchange even with the use of a tracheal tube, while intermittent positive pressure ventilation produced tidal volumes of over 1000 ml.(4)Rhythmic sternal compression failed to reoxygenate five of six hypoxic curarized adults.(5)Closed chest cardiac massage should be accompanied by positive pressure ventilation of the lungs. One of several possible combinations consists of following each lung inflation by four sternal compressions, at one second intervals.
All schools should make an attempt to include film study in their curricula in order to keep their students abreast with the rapid advancements in the communications media. (CK)
A committee in the St. Louis Metropolitan area has been established to promote communication and cooperation among the area's existing hospital-based programs in medical technology. Area Medical ...Technology Education Coordinators (AMTEC) was established three years ago primarily to facilitate the administrative functions of medical technology education and to serve as an instrument for the exchange of ideas. Its primary undertaking has been the central processing of applications to the area programs, as an aid in the admission process. In addition, a continuing education program sponsored by the committee has been established, and various "curriculum sharing" activities have been sponsored for the students enrolled in the schools. Future plans for the committee include sponsoring an on-going evaluation process of graduates by employers, and establishing a criterion-referenced question pool. The authors describe the experiences of the committee to date and plans for the implementation of future goals.
The primary mechanism leading to hypersecretion of aldosterone during sodium depletion in the dog is increased activity of the renin-angiotensin system. Loss of salt and water leads to renin release ...and increased aldosterone and corticosterone secretion. Plasma renin was elevated within one hour after diuretic administration. The increase in corticosterone production was transient; return of corticosterone to the control level appears to be mediated by the negative corticosteroid feedback mechanism via the anterior pituitary. It is suggested that the role of ACTH in aldosterone production during sodium depletion is a supportive one. In severe sodium depletion decreased plasma sodium and increased plasma potassium concentrations further augment the hypersecretion of aldosterone.
Examined the tropic movements of orientation, in Porcellio scaber (a species of sow-bug). Varying number of Ss were involved. In the 1st method, the sensitive individuals were exposed suddenly to ...lateral illumination, the direction, with reference to the light of the first movement of the organism out of its course was recorded. The 1st movement was found to be away from the light. The 2nd method showed that Ss responded more readily to light coming from behind, than from the front of the S. Porcellio is easily guided in any desired direction by changing the direction of light falling on it from above. The lack of consistency in the direction of the S was attributed to the relatively large angular diameter of the source of light, and partly to the inequalities in the sensitiveness of the 2 eyes of certain Ss to light.
