Abstract
Future upgrades of the CERN Experiments and Accelerators require optical links capable of handling the large data volume generated in particle detectors and beam position (BPMs) sensors. ...Silicon Photonics optical transceivers are a promising candidate to process the required data rate as well as efficiently operate in the harsh radiation environment. We present the experimental characterisation of silicon modulators together with demonstration of optical transmitters based on custom designed Silicon Photonics integrated circuits.
Abstract
Silicon photonics technology promises significant improvements for fibre optic links of future upgrades of HEP experiments. Such systems will require high levels of radiation tolerance and ...silicon photonics modulators have been shown to be very robust when exposed to high levels of radiation under certain conditions. We demonstrate for the first time that changing the temperature of ring modulators during or after irradiation can significantly improve their performance.

Abstract
The Versatile Link
+
project targeting the Phase 2 HL-LHC detector upgrades is entering the production phase. After several years of prototyping, the industrialisation of the Versatile Link
...+
Transceiver (VTRx
+
) was launched in 2021 and the production is scheduled to start in 2022. We describe the extensive qualification effort carried out and the quality assurance procedures put in place to monitor the manufacturing quality. We summarise the experience of the industrialisation and we present the plans for the production.
Abstract
Future upgrades of CERN experiments will require low power optical data links to support ever-increasing data-rates at ever-higher radiation levels. Silicon photonics is a CMOS ...optoelectronic technology compatible with these requirements. We present the results of an optical transceiver proof of concept based on a silicon photonics integrated circuit coupled to existing radiation tolerant electronic ASICs.
Abstract
The upgrade of CERN’s accelerator complex requires improved beam instrumentation systems that will generate an increased volume of data to be transferred from the radiation areas to the ...back-end. A solution that increases the throughput of already deployed fibers, with minimal increase of the system complexity, consists in implementing the coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) technique where independent optical carriers at properly spaced wavelengths are multiplexed into a single fiber. In this paper we describe the CWDM Link project, whose scope is to design and build a high-speed radiation-tolerant optical link based on four CWDM channels. We will also provide details of commercially-available CWDM components and their radiation resistance.
Highlights • A trivalent nicotine vaccine was more immunogenic than monovalent vaccine in rats. • The trivalent vaccine generated higher mean titer and fewer non-responders. • The trivalent vaccine ...was more effective in reducing nicotine distribution to brain. • The multivalent vaccine approach should be generalizable to other nicotine immunogens.
We present a novel design and the test results of a 4-channel driver for an array of Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs). This ASIC, named cpVLAD and fabricated in a 65 nm CMOS ...technology, has on-chip charge pumps and is for data rates up to 10 Gbps per channel. The charge pumps are implemented to address the issue of voltage margin of the VCSEL driving stage in the applications under low temperature and harsh radiation environment. Test results indicate that cpVLAD is capable of driving VCSELs with forward voltages of up to 2.8 V using 1.2 V and 2.5 V power supplies with a power consumption of 94 mW/channel.
The Versatile Link project has developed a radiation-hard optical link for LHC phase 1 detector upgrades. The project has reached its final stage and we have launched in 2016 the production of the ...Versatile Transceivers and Versatile Twin Transmitters. This paper provides an update of the production status and a detailed description and results of the quality assurance programme, which includes qualification and acceptance testing at CERN and production testing at the manufacturers' premises.
