There is growing scientific evidence of mental and well-being issues that doctoral research students face as a result of not finishing their program on time. This study aims to explore the factors ...associated with the timely completion of doctoral research studies in the clinical pharmacy speciality. This was a mixed-method study that combined surveys with in-depth interviews. Current doctoral research students and pharmacists who have recently completed their doctoral research program participated in the study. A validated questionnaire and an interview topic guide developed from the literature and pretesting were used to collect data. Data for this study were collected between February 2021 and September 2021. Quantitative data were analysed with the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) V.25 while interview data were subjected to reflexive thematic analysis. 47 students who are currently pursuing their doctoral research program in clinical pharmacy participated in the survey, while 8 pharmacists who had recently completed their doctoral research program in clinical pharmacy participated in the in-depth interviews. Five themes were identified: factors contributing to delay in the program, factors contributing to the timely completion of the program, ways to improve the program, advice to current students and advice to prospective students. Having more than one supervisor, supervisors' commitment to the research work and support from the department were identified as facilitators of timely completion of doctoral research programs in clinical pharmacy. Our study provides an understanding of the barriers and facilitators of timely completion of doctoral research programs in the clinical pharmacy specialist, and how these can be used to improve the postgraduate study programs in Nigeria.

We explored patients' and carers' perspectives on factors influencing access to hypertension care and compliance with treatment.
This was a qualitative study using in-depth interviews with ...hypertensive patients and/or family carers receiving care at a government-owned hospital in north-central Nigeria. Eligible participants were patients who had hypertension, receiving care in the study setting, were aged 55 years and over and had given their written/thumbprint consent to participate in the study. An interview topic guide was developed from the literature and through pretesting. All the interviews were held face-to-face by a member of the research team. This study was conducted between December 2019 and February 2020. NVivo version 12 was used to analyse the data.
A total of 25 patients and 13 family carers participated in this study. To understand the barriers to compliance with hypertension self-management practices, three themes were explored, namely: personal factors, family/societal factors and clinic/organization factors. Support was the key enabling factor for self-management practices, which were categorized to emerge from three sources namely: family members, community and government. Participants reported that they do not receive lifestyle management advice from healthcare professionals, and do not know the importance of eating low-salt diets/engaging in physical activities.
Our findings show that study participants had little or no awareness of hypertension self-management practices. Providing financial support, free educational seminars, free blood pressure checks, and free medical care for the elderly could improve hypertension self-management practices among patients living with hypertension.
There is an increasing prevalence of cancer in Africa with approximately 80% of cancers diagnosed at an advanced stage. High out-of-pocket healthcare costs and overstretched health systems lead to ...heavy reliance on informal carers for cancer care. This study aims to explore the roles and experiences of informal carers including the impact of cancer care on individuals and communities and support available for carers. We carried out a systematic review following PRISMA reporting guidelines and used critical interpretative synthesis to identify themes and develop an informal carers' experience framework. We searched nine databases and screened 8,123 articles from which 31 studies were included in the review. Most studies were from Sub-Saharan Africa (29/31, 94%), particularly Uganda (9, 29%). Carers were mostly women, aged 30-40 years, and siblings, spouses, or children. Caring roles included care coordination, fundraising, and emotional support. Caring was time-consuming with some carers reporting 121 hours/week of caring, associated with the inability to pursue paid work and depression. Four themes demonstrated carers' experiences: 1) intrapersonal factors: strong sense of familial obligation, and grappling with gender roles, 2) interpersonal factors: impact of a cancer diagnosis on households, changing social and sexual relationships, 3) community factors: navigating cultural norms on nature and location of care, and 4) health system influences: barriers to accessing healthcare services, and tensions between traditional and biomedical medicine. These themes aligned with Bronfenbrenner's social ecological model which aided our development of a framework for understanding informal carers' experiences'. Our review highlights multifaceted roles and experiences of informal carers in Africa, amidst cultural and community impacts. Carers experience a strong obligation and willingly undertake the role of carer, but at the expense of their social, economic, and psychological wellbeing. Support for carers, including flexible working hours/ carers' allowance, should be incorporated as part of universal health coverage.
The UK has a significant and growing population of older adults with frailty and complex healthcare needs, necessitating innovative care solutions. This study aimed to explore patients’ and carers’ ...experiences of a novel integrated service that was set up to address the increasing healthcare needs of older people living with frailty. A qualitative study that combined free-text survey questions with in-depth interviews. This study is part of a larger non-randomized trial of the service, with evaluation of wellbeing and quality of life at baseline, 2 to 4 weeks, and 10 to 14 weeks. Patients (aged 65 and above) with an electronic Frailty Index in the severe range and their informal family carers participated in this study. Data were collected between April 2019 and March 2020. Free text survey responses and interview data were subjected to reflexive thematic analyses. Four themes were generated: the overall experience of the service; interactions within the service; treatment and interventions; and outcomes due to the service. Most participants wanted further follow-up and more extensive integration with other services. Most participants described their overall experience positively, especially the available time to address their full range of concerns, but opportunities to integrate the service more fully and to extend follow-up remain.

Much is not known about education programmes for Nigerian incarcerated individuals. Consequently, different correctional institutions worldwide have different forms of correctional education offered ...to incarcerated individuals. Nigerian incarcerated individuals perceive that there are implementations of education programmes offered to them. However, little or nothing is known about how incarcerated individuals perceive these education programmes. To this end, this study ascertains the incarcerated individuals' perception of education programmes as well as the expectations of social work profession in ensuring that incarcerated individuals in correctional institutions are provided with quality education. In-depth interviews involving 20 convicted incarcerated individuals from Owerri correctional centre were conducted. Thematic analysis was used in analyzing data generated for the study. Findings show that education programmes are available and essential, but the quality of the programme does not go down well with the incarcerated individuals. It also revealed that incarcerated individuals were not allowed to decide on the type of education programme to be involved in. To this end, their participation in the programme is jeopardized. The findings further revealed that little or nothing is known about social workers in prison education. Therefore, the inclusion of correctional social workers as an integral part of education programmes that aim to reform, rehabilitate and reintegrate incarcerated individuals becomes necessary.
