The use of Azospirillum brasilense as a crop inoculant has increased in recent years. Thus, the compatibility of the inoculation technology with seed treatments using pesticides needs to be ...evaluated. In this study, we evaluated the effect of an insecticide and fungicide formulation on A. brasilense strain FP2 population by culturing and culture‐independent approaches. In addition, we evaluated the impact of these pesticides on the ability of A. brasilense to promote plant growth by monitoring biometric traits (root and shoot dry mass and length) of wheat grown in Greenhouse conditions. Seed pesticide dressings, mainly fungicide, led to a significant mortality of A. brasilense over time. The ability of A. brasilense to promote wheat growth also decreased due to pesticide treatments combined with sowing delay. Considering that pesticides confer fitness advantages to the wheat in field condition, our results suggest that sowing within the first 4 h after inoculation maintain the beneficial effects of A. brasilense on wheat growth promotion. Furthermore, we conclude that inoculation and treatment of seeds with pesticides may be compatible techniques when carried out immediately before sowing.
Significance and Impact of the Study: Wheat crop fields are adversely affected by biotic and abiotic stresses. Aiming to overcome these challenges, seed dressing with pesticides and Azospirillum brasilense have been widely used in wheat crop fields. The combination of culture and culture‐independent techniques allowed us to confirm that seed pesticide dressings, mainly fungicide, led to a significant mortality of A. brasilense which increased with storage time. Our results suggest that sowing within the first 4 h after inoculation maintains the beneficial effects of A. brasilense on wheat growth promotion.
The tropical peatlands of southern Brazil are essential for the maintenance of the Atlantic Rain Forest, one of the 25 hotspots of biodiversity in the world. Although diazotrophic micro‐organisms are ...essential for the maintenance of this nitrogen limited ecosystem, so far studies have focused only on micro‐organisms involved in the carbon cycle. In this work, peat samples were collected from three tropical peatland regions during dry and rainy seasons and their chemical and microbial characteristics were evaluated. Our results showed that the structure of the diazotrophic communities in the Brazilian tropical peatlands differs in the evaluated seasons. The abundance of the genus Bradyrhizobium showed to be affected by rainfall and peat pH. Despite the shifts of the nitrogen‐fixing population in the tropical peatland caused by seasonality it showed to be constantly dominated by α‐Proteobacteria followed by Cyanobacteria. In addition, more than 50% of nifH gene sequences have not been classified, indicating the necessity for more studies in tropical peatland, since the reduction of N supply in the peatlands stimulates the recalcitrant organic matter decomposition performed by peatland micro‐organisms, influencing the C stock.
Significance and Impact of the Study: This manuscript reports the first ecological study of tropical peatlands diazotrophic communities from the Brazilian Atlantic Rain Forest, one of the world's largest biodiversity hotspots. Based on culturing and culture‐independent approaches, our results showed alterations in the structure of the diazotrophic communities in different seasons. The genus Bradyrhizobium abundance was affected by rainfall and peat pH. In addition, the great number of unclassified nitrogen‐fixing bacteria indicated the need for additional studies to guide future mitigation actions, since the reduction of N supply in the peatlands stimulates the recalcitrant organic matter decomposition performed by peatland micro‐organisms, influencing the C stock.
Particle physics today faces the challenge of explaining the mystery of dark matter, the origin of matter over anti-matter in the Universe, the origin of the neutrino masses, the apparent fine-tuning ...of the electro-weak scale, and many other aspects of fundamental physics. Perhaps the most striking frontier to emerge in the search for answers involves new physics at mass scales comparable to familiar matter, below the GeV-scale, or even radically below, down to sub-eV scales, and with very feeble interaction strength. New theoretical ideas to address dark matter and other fundamental questions predict such feebly interacting particles (FIPs) at these scales, and indeed, existing data provide numerous hints for such possibility. A vibrant experimental program to discover such physics is under way, guided by a systematic theoretical approach firmly grounded on the underlying principles of the Standard Model. This document represents the report of the FIPs 2022 workshop, held at CERN between the 17 and 21 October 2022 and aims to give an overview of these efforts, their motivations, and the decadal goals that animate the community involved in the search for FIPs.

This thesis interrogates the practice, economy, and sociopolitics of slavery and captivity among Indigenous peoples and Euro-American colonizers on the Northwest Coast of North America from ...1774-1846. Through the use of secondary and primary source materials, including the private journals of fur traders, oral histories, and anthropological analyses, this project has found that with the advent of the maritime fur trade and its subsequent evolution into a land-based fur trading economy, prolonged interactions between Euro-American agents and Indigenous peoples fundamentally altered the economy and practice of Native slavery on the Northwest Coast. Furthermore, Euro-American forms of captivity (including hostage-taking and unfree labor) intersected with the Native slave economy in distinctive and fascinating ways. Finally, this study observes that the Indigenous economic, sociopolitical, and demographic landscape of the Northwest Coast underwent various transformations in which captivity in its myriad forms assumed a central role.
Between 1 February 1992 and 1 March 1993, we performed Ross's aortic replacement in 7 men and 4 women with rheumatic heart disease. The patients' ages ranged from 22 to 60 years (mean, 41 years). All ...11 patients had aortic valve disease; 2 also had mitral valve disease. In all patients, the right ventricular outflow tract was reconstructed using an autologous pericardial conduit containing a bovine cardiac valve bioprosthesis manufactured at our institution. The 2 patients who had mitral valve disease underwent a concomitant mitral valvuloplasty. In 1 patient, minimal aortic regurgitation was documented by means of transesophageal echocardiography immediately after the cessation of cardiopulmonary bypass, but no hemodynamic compromise was noted. In another patient, mediastinal exploration was required for bleeding, 3.5 hours postoperatively. The follow-up period ranged from 6 to 16 months (mean, 11.3 months). Results were assessed by means of clinical and transesophageal echocardiographic studies. No infection or technical failure was encountered. No patient died. All patients remain asymptomatic, and follow-up echocardiography has revealed no transaortic or transpulmonary gradient. The Ross operation was chosen for this group of patients because it avoids the use of mechanical valves and subsequent anticoagulant therapy. Most of our patients have a low income and a history of noncompliance with the strict postoperative drug regimen. Although the short-term results have been excellent with the Ross operation and our combination bioprosthesis, long-term evaluation is needed.
