At the J-PARC muon facility (MUSE), new beamlines started operation recently. H-line is a high-intensity pulsed muon beamline for fundamental physics experiments. The first beam of the H-line was ...delivered to its first branch (H1 area) in January 2022, where a precise measurement of the muonium hyperfine structure and a search for μ-e conversion will be conducted. Further extension of the second branch of the H-line for a muon g-2/EDM experiment and a transmission muon microscope project is also ongoing. In addition, the second branch of the surface muon beamline (S2 area of the S-line) was opened for a muonium 1S-2S spectroscopy experiment in FY2021. In this paper, the recent upgrade and present status of the J-PARC muon facility and its prospects are presented.
A destructive monitor to measure the longitudinal bunch width of a low-energy and low-intensity muon beam was developed. This bunch-width monitor (BWM) employed microchannel plates to detect a single ...muon with high time resolution. In addition, constant-fraction discriminators were adopted to suppress the time-walk effect. The time resolution was measured to be 65 ps in rms using a picosecond-pulsed laser. This resolution satisfied the requirements of the muon linac of the J-PARC E34 experiment. We measured the bunch width of negative-muonium ions (μ+e−e−) accelerated with a radio-frequency quadrupole using the BWM. The bunch width was successfully measured to beσ=0.54±0.11ns, which is consistent with the simulation.
The aim of this research is to investigate radiation-induced luminescence of non-doped Mg2SiO4 single crystal. The Mg2SiO4 single crystals were synthesized by the Czochralski process. The obtained ...crystal samples were studied to characterize the radio-photoluminescence (RPL), radio-luminescence (RL), and thermally-stimulated luminescence (TSL) properties. A non-irradiated (or as-prepared) sample shows no particular PL features whereas X-ray treated sample shows a broad PL emission around 630 nm under excitation at 270 nm. The latter observation indicates that RPL centre has been generated by X-ray irradiation. The X-ray induced RL can be observed due to the RPL centre around 630 nm, and the intensity monotonically increases with accumulating the incident radiation dose. TSL glow curve consists of three peaks at 160, 260, and 390 °C, and the initial rise method derived the activation energies of 1.33, 1.47, and 1.85 eV, respectively. The first two TSL are associated with some shallow trapping centres, and annealing at this temperature range builds up the RPL response. On the other hand, annealing at higher temperatures supresses the RPL response; thus, the RPL centre is located at deeper site.
•Non-doped Mg2SiO4 single crystal was grown by the Czochralski process.•Non-doped Mg2SiO4 single crystal shows RL, TSL, and RPL.•RPL emission is observed around 630 nm while exciting at 270 nm.•Build-up effect of RPL is observed by annealing below 260 °C.•RPL can be completely erased by annealing ∼600 °C.
Optical and scintillation properties of TGG (Tb3Ga5O12) and TSAG (Tb3Sc2Al3O12) crystals were investigated, and capabilities to be used as a scintillator screen were demonstrated. In ...photoluminescence (PL) spectra, some emission lines due to Tb3+4f-4f transitions appeared from 500 to 700nm. PL quantum yields of TGG and TSAG were 6.5% and 50.9%, respectively. When irradiated by X-rays, these crystals showed intense scintillation, and the emission wavelengths were the same as those in PL spectra. The scintillation decay times of TGG and TSAG were 94 and 678μs, respectively. Further, we have demonstrated X-ray imaging using both TSGG and TSAG crystal plates and confirmed a capability as scintillator screens.
The conceptus is susceptible to destruction by maternal cytotoxic lymphocytes, which have cytotoxic potential. Therefore, it is expected that mechanisms for regulating cytotoxic lymphocytes exist, ...but little is known about the expression of cytotoxic genes in the endometrium. In the present study, we examined the spatial and temporal expression patterns of the cytotoxic genes perforin, granzyme B, and granulysin during the estrous cycle and gestation in the bovine endometrium. Endometrial tissues were collected from cows during the estrous cycle and gestation. The gene expression patterns of the three cytotoxic genes were examined using quantitative polymerase chain reaction and in situ hybridization, and cytotoxic lymphocyte subsets were characterized using immunohistochemistry. During mid‐ to late gestation in the intercaruncular (ICAR), granulysin expression was significantly increased, and a large number of granulysin‐expressing cells were localized in the luminal epithelium. Perforin and granzyme B displayed similar expression profiles and were highly expressed in the peri‐implantation endometrium, but few cells expressing these genes were found in the endometrial stroma. In conclusion, these findings suggest that in the ICAR epithelium granulysin may play important roles in the establishment and maintenance of gestation during normal pregnancy.
T cells are the dominant lymphocytes in the endometrium and are considered to play a crucial role in implantation and in the maintenance of gestation through cytokine production and immune ...regulation. The mechanisms underlying immunoregulation at the feto-maternal interface are still obscure for this complex system. Understanding the role of T cells is a key factor in understanding the endometrial immune system. In this study, the distribution of endometrial CD3+ T cells in bovines was examined by immunohistochemical analysis. The estrous cycle and gestation was divided into 4 stages, and the number of CD3+-positive T cells was counted in each stage. CD3+ cells were found in the endometrium in significant numbers throughout the estrous cycle and were mostly located in the subepithelial area. The number of CD3+ cells significantly increased in the early and mid-luteal phases but decreased after implantation with the progression of gestation. No T cells were found in the placentome or specifically in the tissues near the fetus, including the trophoblastic area. In addition, very few T cells were found in stromal regions close to the myometrium of the endometrium. These findings suggest that downregulation of bovine endometrial CD3+ T-cell functions is closely related to the successful maintenance of gestation in a spatiotemporal manner.

Objective: To verify the effectiveness of preventive care classes conducted as pro bono by occupational therapists working in hospitals under the guidance of a university teacher for senior citizens ...living in apartment buildings. Methods: Occupational therapists implemented preventive care classes pro bono once a month over a period of three months for senior citizens living in apartment buildings. We conducted a group work-centered program on the themes of fall prevention, traffic safety, and preventive care / dementia prevention. Wilcoxon signed rank testing was performed to compare the SF-12 and preventive care (kaigo-yobo) checklists of continuously attended subjects before and after classes. Results: 11 subjects with an average age of 78.4 ± 8.3 attended classes continuously. Before and after attending preventive care classes, only the SF-12 role physical tended to increase significantly (p = 0.058). Discussion: The results suggested that preventive care classes for senior citizens living local apartment buildings may have affected the health-related quality of life role physical.
