An energy of 362 MJ is stored in each of the two LHC proton beams for nominal beam parameters. This will be further increased to about 700 MJ in the future high luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) and ...uncontrolled beam losses represent a significant hazard for the integrity and safe operation of the machine. In this paper, a number of failure mechanisms that can lead to a fast increase of beam losses are analyzed. Most critical are failures in the magnet protection system, namely the quench heaters and a novel protection system called coupling-loss induced quench (CLIQ). An important outcome is that magnet protection has to be evaluated for its impact on the beam and designed accordingly. In particular, CLIQ, which is to protect the new HL-LHC triplet magnets, constitutes the fastest known failure in the LHC if triggered spuriously. A schematic change of CLIQ to mitigate the hazard is presented. A loss of the beam-beam kick due to the extraction of one beam is another source of beam losses with a fast onset. A significantly stronger impact is expected in the upcoming LHC Run III and HL-LHC as compared to the current LHC, mainly due to the increased bunch intensity. Its criticality and mitigation methods are discussed. It is shown that symmetric quenches in the superconducting magnets for the final focusing triplet can have a significant impact on the beam on short timescales. The impact on the beam due to failures of the beam-beam compensating wires as well as coherent excitations by the transverse beam damper are also discussed.
In the extremely unlikely event of a non-working beam dumping system in the LHC, the 360 MJ of stored beam energy can be dissipated in the collimation system as a last mitigation measure. In such a ...situation, it is important to reduce the stored beam energy both quickly and at the same time as smoothly as possible in order to limit the risk of trips of critical systems, to avoid quenches of superconducting magnets (which would lead to changes of the beam trajectory and damage to the accelerator) and ultimately damage to the collimators themselves. Detailed steps and parameters have been developed and validated during two dedicated experiments with beam in the LHC. This paper summarizes the key aspects in view of the preparation of such a procedure for operational use, which will allow for the safe disposal of the full LHC beam by the operation crews.
Crab cavities (CCs) constitute a key component of the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project. In case of a failure, they can induce significant transverse beam offsets within tens of microseconds, ...necessitating a fast removal of the circulating beam to avoid damage to accelerator components due to losses from the displaced beam halo. In preparation for the final design to be employed in the LHC, a series of tests were conducted on prototype crab cavities installed in the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) at CERN. This paper summarizes the machine protection requirements and observations during the first tests of crab cavities with proton beams in the SPS. In addition, the machine protection implications for future SPS tests and for the use of such equipment in the HL-LHC are discussed.
For nominal beam parameters at 7 TeV/c each of the two LHC proton beams has a stored energy of 362 MJ threatening to damage accelerator equipment in case of uncontrolled beam loss. The energy stored ...in the magnet system at 7 TeV/c will exceed 10 GJ. In order to avoid damage of accelerator equipment, complex machine protection systems are required. Magnet protection and powering interlock systems must be operational already before commissioning the magnet powering system. Beam operation, throughout the operational cycle from injection to colliding beams, requires fully operational protection systems, including beam interlock systems, beam dumping system, beam instrumentation (mainly beam loss monitors) as well as collimators and beam absorbers. Details of LHC machine protection have been presented on several occasions and the systems involved in protection are well documented. This paper gives an overview of LHC machine protection, discusses the progress with the implementation and presents first results from the commissioning of some systems.

Chapter 14 in High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) : Preliminary Design Report. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is one of the largest scientific instruments ever built. Since opening up a ...new energy frontier for exploration in 2010, it has gathered a global user community of about 7,000 scientists working in fundamental particle physics and the physics of hadronic matter at extreme temperature and density. To sustain and extend its discovery potential, the LHC will need a major upgrade in the 2020s. This will increase its luminosity (rate of collisions) by a factor of five beyond the original design value and the integrated luminosity (total collisions created) by a factor ten. The LHC is already a highly complex and exquisitely optimised machine so this upgrade must be carefully conceived and will require about ten years to implement. The new configuration, known as High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), will rely on a number of key innovations that push accelerator technology beyond its present limits. Among these are cutting-edge 11-12 tesla superconducting magnets, compact superconducting cavities for beam rotation with ultra-precise phase control, new technology and physical processes for beam collimation and 300 metre-long high-power superconducting links with negligible energy dissipation. The present document describes the technologies and components that will be used to realise the project and is intended to serve as the basis for the detailed engineering design of HL-LHC.

The SPS beam dump extraction process was studied in detail to investigate the possibility of operation with reduced kicker voltage and to fully understand the trajectories and loss patterns of ...miss-kicked beam. This paper briefly describes the SPS beam dump process, and presents the tracking studies carried out for failure cases. The simulation results are compared to the results of measurements made with low intensity beam.
Injection of beam into the LHC at 450 GeV/c proceeds over two 2.7 km long transfer lines from the SPS. The small aperture of the LHC at injection imposes tight constraints on the stability of the ...beam transfer. The first transfer line TI 8 was commissioned in the fall of 2004 with low intensity beam. Since the beam position monitor signal fluctuations were dominated by noise with low intensity beam, the beam stability could not be obtained from a simple comparison of consecutive trajectories. Instead model independent analysis (MIA) techniques as well as scraping on collimators were used to estimate the intrinsic stability of the transfer line. This paper presents the analysis methods and the resulting stability estimates.
