A comprehensive outline for understanding and recommending the therapeutic use of ozone in combination with established therapy in diseases characterized by a chronic oxidative stress is currently ...available. The view of the absolute ozone toxicity is incorrect, because it has been based either on lung or on studies performed in artificial environments that do not correspond to the real antioxidant capacity of body compartments. In fact, ozone exerts either a potent toxic activity or it can stimulate biological responses of vital importance, analogously to gases with prospective therapeutic value such as NO, CO, H2S, H2, as well as O2 itself. Such a crucial difference has increasingly become evident during the last decade. The purpose of this review is to explain the aspects still poorly understood, highlighting the divergent activity of ozone on the various biological districts. It will be clarified that such a dual effect does not depend only upon the final gas concentration, but also on the particular biological system where ozone acts. The real significance of ozone as adjuvant therapeutic treatment concerns severe chronic pathologies among which are cardiovascular diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, multiple sclerosis, and the dry form of age-related macular degeneration. It is time for a full insertion of ozone therapy within pharmaceutical sciences, responding to all the requirements of quality, efficacy and safety, rather than as either an alternative or an esoteric approach.
This review examines the biological role of oxidants and antioxidants continuously produced by all living cells. Physiologically, human beings, who have inherited good genes, used to eat moderately a ...healthy diet and exercised daily, both systems are equally important and essential in maintaining a normal long life. However, the aging process slowly leads to a disequilibrium that is accentuated in pathologies such as diabetes, cardiovascular, degenerative, pulmonary, infective diseases, and cancer. All of these diseases shorten the life span in about 80% of individuals and represent a huge social-economic problem for health authorities. Several factors such as excessive feeding, smoking, alcoholism, and a poor life-style conjure up to their realization. Their progress, initially promoted by some pathogens and a wrong life-style, is deeply accentuated by an excessive and deranged production of deadly oxidants no longer tameable by an inhibited control of the antioxidant defences. Effective orthodox drugs are able to slow down these ailments but they impoverish the quality of life because they cannot reactivate the innate ability to restore the complexity of the antioxidant system. Several potential approaches to renew this system have been discussed and their possible roles to reactivate a valid protection in at least some of the outlined pathologies. It is hoped to evaluate this integrated medical approach because it represents a sheet anchor for many patients.

Summary
The aim of this brief review is to summarize the recent literature on the effect of ozone (O3) on cutaneous tissues. Recently it has been reported that a chronic contact with O3 can be ...deleterious for the skin. Our group and others have shown a progressive depletion of antioxidant content in the stratum corneum and this can then lead to a cascade of effects resulting in an active cellular response in the deeper layers of the skin. Using an in vivo model we have shown an increase of proliferative, adaptive and proinflammatory cutaneous tissue responses. On the other hand the well known activity of O3 as a potent disinfectant and oxygen (O2) donor has been also studied for therapeutic use. Two approaches have been described. The first consists of a quasi‐total body exposure in a thermostatically controlled cabin. This treatment has proved to be useful in patients with chronic limb ischaemia. The second approach is based on the topical application of ozonated olive oil in several kinds of skin infection (from soreness to diabetic ulcers, burns, traumatic and surgical wounds, abscesses and skin reactions after radiotherapy). We and other authors have observed a striking cleansing effect with improved oxygenation and enhanced healing of these conditions. It is now clear that, on the skin, O3, like other drugs, poisons and radiation, can display either a damaging effect from a long exposure or a beneficial effect after a brief exposure to O2 and O3 or to the application of ozonated oil to chronic wounds.
Although orthodox medicine has provided a variety of topical anti-infective agents, some of them have become scarcely effective owing to antibiotic- and chemotherapeutic-resistant pathogens. For more ...than a century, ozone has been known to be an excellent disinfectant that nevertheless had to be used with caution for its oxidizing properties. Only during the last decade it has been learned how to tame its great reactivity by precisely dosing its concentration and permanently incorporating the gas into triglycerides where gaseous ozone chemically reacts with unsaturated substrates leading to therapeutically active ozonated derivatives. Today the stability and efficacy of the ozonated oils have been already demonstrated, but owing to a plethora of commercial products, the present paper aims to analyze these derivatives suggesting the strategy to obtain products with the best characteristics.
Abstract
In this work, we present the design of an ultra-fast IR (InfraRed) detector for the search of astronomical transients. Time-domain astronomy is a field in continuous growth in the last ...years, with interest in detectors with nanosecond performance, in order to observe potential fast transients with the time scale of GRBs (Gamma Ray Bursts) and FRBs (Fast Radio Bursts). An ultra-fast temporal detector based on HgCdTe photoconductors is under development in Italy, at the Frascati National Laboratory of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics, by tests at SINBAD, the DAFNE infrared beamline. The detector will be used for mid-IR observations together with a ground-based reflecting telescope or launched on a scientific balloon.

Ozone is a very reactive gas that is toxic to the respiratory system. However, under controlled conditions, it can be therapeutically useful in several human diseases. An unfavourable combination of ...factors (ozone is one of the worst troposphere pollutants) and past misuse have led to misgivings about ozonetherapy. However, basic and clinical work developed over the past 10 years has clarified the fundamental mechanisms of action of ozone in biology and medicine. Interestingly, judicious doses of ozone dissolved in blood trigger a cascade of well-defined chemical compounds acting on multiple cellular targets according to well-known molecular, biochemical and pharmacological pathways. Ozonetherapy is proving to be very useful in age-related macular degeneration, ischaemic and infectious diseases, and in wound healing disorders, where conventional medicine has failed. Critical evaluation of the potential therapeutic utility of this simple, inexpensive medical application by national and international health authorities is warranted and may lead to clinical benefit for a large proportion of the world's population.
Abstract
Multi-messenger astronomy requires the use and development of telescopes and detectors for temporal observations across all the electromagnetic spectrum. The interest of our team is towards ...time-domain (or longitudinal, in the jargon of storage ring diagnostics) detectors able to make observations over the time rather than transversely by making photographs or spectrographs. The FAIRTEL (Fast InfraRed TELescope) experiment wants to build a very fast detector in the Mid InfraRed (MIR) to be used in time-domain astronomy. The experiment is oriented mainly toward the search of fast astronomical transients in the Galaxy, similarly to what has been observed in different electromagnetic ranges with the discovery of the FRBs (Fast Radio Burst) and the GRBs (Gamma-Ray Burst). In the last years, time-domain astronomy is growing in interest and intends to study events on time scales that can go from hundreds of milliseconds to microseconds and even shorter. The detector proposed by the FAIRTEL experiment, is based on HgCdTe semiconductors and on the experience done in the diagnostics for storage ring developed at DAFNE, the Italian e+/e− circular collider. The detection system design is in progress at the LNF (Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati) of INFN (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare) while the telescope will be a standard reflecting type, like a Newtonian, a Cassegrain or a Ritchey–Chrétien telescope. The detection apparatus is under test at the IR synchrotron beamline SINBAD at DAFNE and it is foreseen to be implemented at the OPC (Osservatorio Polifunzionale del Chianti). It should be able to observe events with transients down to the nanosecond. A further development of the project involves the extension from ground-based observations to those by using balloons for scientific studies.
Wound tissue repair is a complex and dynamic process of restoring cellular structures and tissue layers. Improvement of this process is crucial for several pathologies characterized by chronic ...delayed wound closure such as diabetes, and the investigation of new approaches aimed to ameliorate the wound healing process is under continuous evolution. Recently, the usage of vegetable matrices in the form of ozonated oils has been proposed and several researchers have shown a positive effect in the wound, based on their bactericidal, antiviral, and antifungal properties. The present study was undertaken to compare the effect that different ozonated oils (olive, sesame and linseed) with the same level of ozonation have on wound healing rate in SKH1 mice. Several histological parameters and the level of key proteins such as VEGF and PCNA have been analyzed. Only treatment with ozonated sesame oil shows a faster wound closure in the first 7 days. This effect paralleled with the increased VEGF and PCNA levels, NFκB nuclear translocation and 4-HNE formation. The present study shows that not only the ozonation grade is of importance for the improvement of wound healing process but also the typical composition of the oil.
Evaluation of bactericidal effect of different concentrations of ozone when used (a) as a gas, or (b) dissolved in saline. The addition of hydrogen peroxide or 4-hydroxynonenal dissolved in saline ...was also tested, as well as the effect of human plasma. Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant Staph. aureus (MRSA), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, suspended in their culture media were tested. While all bacteria suspended in protein-free saline were killed at high ozone concentrations, they survived when as little as 5% human plasma was present. Hydrogen peroxide was 100-fold less active than ozone and needed to remain in contact with bacteria for at least 60 min. 4-hydroxynonenal (2 μmol l⁻¹) was inhibitory for proliferation of both Staph. aureus and MRSA, but not for Ps. aeruginosa. Ozone and the cascade of its derivative products are potent bactericidal agents, but even small amounts of human plasma, hence of hydro- and liposoluble antioxidants, in bacterial suspensions inhibit oxidation and protect bacteria. Any substantial in vivo cytocidal effect of ozone and its derivatives can be excluded. On the other hand, topical and continuous action of various ozone preparations remains valuable in a variety of skin and mucosal infections.
Radioguided surgery (RGS) is a medical practice which thanks to a radiopharmaceutical tracer and a probe allows the surgeon to identify tumor residuals up to a millimetric resolution in real-time. ...The employment of β− emitters, instead of γ or β+, reduces background from healthy tissues, administered activity to the patient, and medical exposure. In a previous work the possibility of using a CMOS Imager (Aptina MT9V011), initially designed for visible light imaging, to detect β− from 90Y or 90Sr sources has been established. Because of its possible application as counting probe in RGS, the performances of MT9V011 in clinical-like conditions were studied.11This work financed by Istituto Nazionale Fisica Nucleare, Italy, project CHIR2, and partially supported by Universitá degli Studi di Perugia, Italy , Fondo Ricerca di Base 2017, project SEISIPO.
Through horizontal scans on a collimated 90Sr source of different sizes (1, 3, 5, 7 mm), we have determined relationships between scan fit parameters and the source dimension, namely A quadratic correlation and a linear dependency of, respectively, signal integrated over scan interval, and maximum signal against source diameter, are determined. Horizontal scan measurements on a source, interposing collimators of different size, aim to determine relationships or correlations between scan fit parameters and source dimension. A quadratic correlation and a linear dependency of, respectively, signal integrated over scan interval, and maximum signal against source diameter are determined.
In order to get closer to clinical conditions, agar–agar phantoms containing 90Y with different dimensions and activities were prepared. A 90Y phantom is characterized by a central spot and a ring all around, for simulating both signal (tumor) and background (surrounding healthy tissue). The relationship found between scan maximum and 90Sr source diameter is then exploited to extract the concentration ratio between spot and external ring of the 90Y phantom. This observable, defined as the ratio between the tumor and the nearby healthy tissues uptake simulates the Tumor-to-Non-tumor Ratio (TNR). With the aim of evaluating the sensor’s ability to discriminate signal from background relying on the significance parameter, a further 90Y phantom, featuring a well-known and clinical-like activity will mimic the signal only condition. This result is used to extrapolate to different source sizes, after having estimated the background for various TNR. The obtained significance values suggest that the MT9V011 sensor is capable of distinguishing a signal from an estimated background, depending on the interplay among TNR, acquisition time and tumor diameter.
•A CMOS imager has been used as sensor for beta- emission from isotopes (90Y) of interest in Radioguided surgery.•Using a position scan a correlation between the source dimension and the shape of the response has been found.•The sensitivity of the sensor to tumor detection has been determined by studying the interplay among TNR, acquisition time and tumor diameter.
