As demonstrated with the novel coronavirus pandemic, rapid and accurate diagnosis is key to determine the clinical characteristic of a disease and to improve vaccine development. Once the infected ...person is identified, hematological findings may be used to predict disease outcome and offer the correct treatment. Rapid and accurate diagnosis and clinical parameters are pivotal to track infections during clinical trials and set protection status. This is also applicable for re-emerging diseases like dengue fever, which causes outbreaks in Asia and Latin America every 4 to 5 years. Some areas in the US are also endemic for the transmission of dengue virus (DENV), the causal agent of dengue fever. However, significant number of DENV infections in rural areas are diagnosed solely by clinical and hematological findings because of the lack of availability of ELISA or PCR-based tests or the infrastructure to implement them in the near future. Rapid diagnostic tests (RDT) are a less sensitive, yet they represent a timely way of detecting DENV infections. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is an association between hematological findings and the probability for an NS1-based DENV RDT to detect the DENV NS1 antigen. We also aimed to describe the hematological parameters that are associated with the diagnosis through each test.
This paper presents the MentalRiskEs shared task organized at IberLEF 2023, as part of the 39th International Conference of the Spanish Society for Natural Language Processing (SEPLN 2023). The aim ...of this task is to promote the early detection of mental risk disorders in Spanish. We outline three detection tasks: Task 1 on eating disorders, Task 2 on depression, and Task 3 on an undisclosed disorder during the competition (anxiety) to observe the transfer of knowledge among the different disorders proposed. Furthermore, we asked participants to submit measurements of carbon emissions for their systems, emphasizing the need for sustainable NLP practices. In this first edition, 37 teams registered, 18 submitted results, and 16 presented papers. Most teams experimented with Transformers, including features, data augmentation, and preprocessing techniques.
The goal of the present study was to examine whether the relation commonly found between purpose in life and well-being occurs regardless of the population being assessed (community vs. inpatient) ...when the presence of somatic symptoms is used as a proxy for well-being. A total of 145 adults participated in the study (psychiatric patients, N = 28; healthy community adults, N = 117). Statistical analyses were first conducted to control for the effects of the observed differences in age and gender between samples. Results showed a significant relation between purpose in life and perceived health even after controlling for population. In both community and inpatient populations, purpose in life correlated with fewer somatic concerns. We discuss the benefits of incorporating a sense of directedness with prevention and treatment purposes.

In this study, Mongolian gerbils were used to analyse features of
Toxocara infection that included larval migration, humoral immune responses to
Toxocara canis excretory–secretory antigens (TES) and ...aspects of host physiology. At day 10 post-infection (p.i.) most larvae were in the intestine and the lungs while later the total number of larvae was higher in the carcass tissue; the number of larvae per gram of tissue was lower elsewhere other than in the brain. Infected animals showed several neurological abnormalities, an early increase in leukocyte and neutrophil levels, two peaks of peripheral eosinophilia (5 and 40 d.p.i.) and high antibody levels against TES in the circulation and in the vitreous humor. kDa was detected by Western blot. The results obtained in this study further support the use of gerbils as an experimental model for systemic, ocular and cerebral toxocariasis.
Vascular staining techniques have been used to describe the vascular structures of several anatomic areas. However, few reports have described this procedure in the head and neck region. This paper ...describes a head and neck vascular labeling procedure, and describes some of the technical complications that may occur.
Fifteen specimen cadaver heads were prepared. After drying the vascular system, the internal carotid arteries were ligated and a solution with latex and a gelling agent was injected into the internal carotid arteries and external jugular veins. Two different colors were employed to differentiate arteries from veins. A total of 60ml latex was injected into each blood vessel. Subsequently, the specimens were refrigerated at 5°C for a minimum of 24 hours. Finally, a dissection was performed to identify the venous and arterial systems of the maxillofacial region.
In most specimens, correct identification of the vascular structures (lingual artery, pterigoyd plexus, and the major palatal arteries, among others) was possible. However, in three heads a major technical problem occurred (the latex remained liquid), making the dissection unfeasible. Other minor complications such as latex obstruction due to the presence of atheromas were found in two further specimens.
The vascular labeling technique is a predictable, effective and simple method for analyzing the vascular system of the maxillofacial area in cadaveric studies, including vessels of reduced diameter or with an intraosseous course. This procedure can be especially useful to teach vascular anatomy to dental students and postgraduate residents.
