In iron-based superconductors the interactions driving the nematic order (that breaks four-fold rotational symmetry in the iron plane) may also mediate the Cooper pairing. The experimental ...determination of these interactions, which are believed to depend on the orbital or the spin degrees of freedom, is challenging because nematic order occurs at, or slightly above, the ordering temperature of a stripe magnetic phase. Here, we study FeSe (ref. )-which exhibits a nematic (orthorhombic) phase transition at Ts = 90 K without antiferromagnetic ordering-by neutron scattering, finding substantial stripe spin fluctuations coupled with the nematicity that are enhanced abruptly on cooling through Ts. A sharp spin resonance develops in the superconducting state, whose energy (∼4 meV) is consistent with an electron-boson coupling mode revealed by scanning tunnelling spectroscopy. The magnetic spectral weight in FeSe is found to be comparable to that of the iron arsenides. Our results support recent theoretical proposals that both nematicity and superconductivity are driven by spin fluctuations.
The coexistence of charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity in tantalum disulfide (2H−TaS2) at low temperature is boosted by applying hydrostatic pressures to study both vibrational and ...magnetic transport properties. Around Pc, we observe a superconducting dome with a maximum superconducting transition temperature Tc=9.1 K. First-principles calculations of the electronic structure predict that, under ambient conditions, the undistorted structure is characterized by a phonon instability at finite momentum close to the experimental CDW wave vector. Upon compression, this instability is found to disappear, indicating the suppression of CDW order. The calculations reveal an electronic topological transition (ETT), which occurs before the suppression of the phonon instability, suggesting that the ETT alone is not directly causing the structural change in the system. The temperature dependence of the first vortex penetration field has been experimentally obtained by two independent methods. While a d wave and single-gap BCS prediction cannot describe the lower critical field Hc1 data, the temperature dependence of the Hc1 can be well described by a single-gap anisotropic s-wave order parameter.

Elucidating the nature of the magnetism of a high-temperature superconductor is crucial for establishing its pairing mechanism. The parent compounds of the cuprate and iron-pnictide superconductors ...exhibit Néel and stripe magnetic order, respectively. However, FeSe, the structurally simplest iron-based superconductor, shows nematic order (Ts=90 K), but not magnetic order in the parent phase, and its magnetic ground state is intensely debated. Here we report inelastic neutron-scattering experiments that reveal both stripe and Néel spin fluctuations over a wide energy range at 110 K. On entering the nematic phase, a substantial amount of spectral weight is transferred from the Néel to the stripe spin fluctuations. Moreover, the total fluctuating magnetic moment of FeSe is ∼60% larger than that in the iron pnictide BaFe2As2. Our results suggest that FeSe is a novel S=1 nematic quantum-disordered paramagnet interpolating between the Néel and stripe magnetic instabilities.
FeSe layer-based superconductors exhibit exotic and distinctive properties. The undoped FeSe shows nematicity and superconductivity, while the heavily electron-doped KxFe2-ySe2 and single-layer ...FeSe/SrTiO3 possess high superconducting transition temperatures that pose theoretical challenges. However, a comprehensive study on the doping dependence of an FeSe layer-based superconductor is still lacking due to the lack of a clean means of doping control. Through angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies on K-dosed thick FeSe films and FeSe0.93S0.07 bulk crystals, here we reveal the internal connections between these two types of FeSe-based superconductors, and obtain superconductivity below ∼ 46 K in an FeSe layer under electron doping without interfacial effects. Moreover, we discover an exotic phase diagram of FeSe with electron doping, including a nematic phase, a superconducting dome, a correlation-driven insulating phase and a metallic phase. Such an anomalous phase diagram unveils the remarkable complexity, and highlights the importance of correlations in FeSe layer-based superconductors.
Biodegradability patterns of two PHAs: a polymer of 3-hydroxybutyric acid (3-PHB) and a copolymer of 3-hydroxybutyric and 3-hydroxyvaleric acids (3-PHB/3-PHV) containing 11
mol% of hydroxyvalerate, ...were studied in the tropical marine environment, in the South China Sea (Nha Trang, Vietnam). No significant differences have been observed between degradation rates of 3-PHB and 3-PHB/3-PHV specimens; it has been found that under study conditions, biodegradation is rather influenced by the shape of the polymer item and the preparation technique than by the chemical composition of the polymer. Biodegradation rates of polymer films in seawater have been found to be higher than those of compacted pellets. As 3-PHB and 3-PHB/3-PHV are degraded and the specimens lose their mass, molecular weight of both polymers is decreased, i.e. polymer chains get destroyed. The polydispersity index of the PHAs grows significantly. However, the degree of crystallinity of both PHAs remains unchanged, i.e. the amorphous phase and the crystalline one are equally disintegrated. PHA-degrading microorganisms were isolated using the clear-zone technique, by inoculating the isolates onto mineral agar that contained PHA as sole carbon source. Based on the 16S rRNA analysis, the PHA-degrading strains were identified as
Enterobacter sp. (four strains),
Bacillus sp. and
Gracilibacillus sp.
The article considers the circumstances of the beginning of teaching medical police at St.Vladimir Imperial University in Kiev that was investigated for the first time. It was established that the ...medical police were taught as one of academic disciplines at the Department of State Medicine Studies. It found out that the given Department began its activities in 1843 when it was organized and headed by professor Ivan Fedorovich Leonov (1809-1854). The adjunct assistant professor Ch.Ya. von Hübbenet and associate professor A. I. Slobodzinsky worked at this Department in 1847-1850 and in 1851-1856 correspondingly. In 1852, the Charter and Staff of the St. Vladimir University provided setting apart medical jurisprudence from medical police subject and teaching it as an independent faculty discipline. It is demonstrated that hereinafter the given practice didn't become widespread in the Universities of the Russian Empire. In 1853, the Department of State Medicine Studies in Kiev was headed by F. F. Mering (1822-1887).
We report the revised crystal structure, static and dynamic magnetic properties of quasi-two dimensional honeycomb-lattice silver delafossite Ag3Co2SbO6. The magnetic susceptibility and specific heat ...data are consistent with the onset of antiferromagnetic long range order at low temperatures with Néel temperature TN ∼ 21.2 K. In addition, the magnetization curves revealed a field-induced (spin-flop type) transition below TN in moderate magnetic fields. The GGA+U calculations show the importance of the orbital degrees of freedom, which maintain a hierarchy of exchange interaction in the system. The strongest antiferromagnetic exchange coupling was found in the shortest Co-Co pairs and is due to direct and superexchange interaction between the half-filled xz + yz orbitals pointing directly to each other. The other four out of six nearest neighbor exchanges within the cobalt hexagon are suppressed, since for these bonds the active half-filled orbitals turned out to be parallel and do not overlap. The electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra reveal a broad absorption line attributed to the Co(2+) ion in an octahedral coordination with an average effective g-factor g = 2.40 ± 0.05 at room temperature and show strong divergence of the ESR parameters below ∼150 K, which implies an extended region of short-range correlations. Based on the results of magnetic and thermodynamic studies in applied fields, we propose a magnetic phase diagram for the new honeycomb-lattice delafossite.
A family of anhydrous 3d transition metal (II) orthophosphates M3(PO4)2 (M = Cr - Zn) counts fourteen members adopting amazing variety of eight structural types. Even more diverse are structural ...types in mixed cation orthophosphates A3-nMn(PO4)2 (A = Sr, Ca, Ba, Pb). Rich crystal chemistry of these species is associated with flexibility of basic structures of sarcopside Fe3(PO4)2, graftonite (Fe,Mn,Ca)3(PO4)2 and farringtonite Mg3(PO4)2 minerals. The low temperature magnetic properties of these compounds are quite peculiar showing either spin gap behavior due to the presence of even spin clusters in the crystal structure or formation of non-collinear magnetic structures with temperature driven succession of magnetic order phase transitions, multiple magnetization reversal and well defined plateaus in magnetization at low temperatures. The correspondence between crystal structure and physical properties in the vast family of transition metal orthophosphates is reviewed. In addition, the structural relationships between different members of the title family are discussed.

Crystalline silicon (Si) nanoparticles present an extremely promising object for bioimaging based on photoluminescence (PL) in the visible and near-infrared spectral regions, but their efficient PL ...emission in aqueous suspension is typically observed after wet chemistry procedures leading to residual toxicity issues. Here, we introduce ultrapure laser-synthesized Si-based quantum dots (QDs), which are water-dispersible and exhibit bright exciton PL in the window of relative tissue transparency near 800 nm. Based on the laser ablation of crystalline Si targets in gaseous helium, followed by ultrasound-assisted dispersion of the deposited films in physiological saline, the proposed method avoids any toxic by-products during the synthesis. We demonstrate efficient contrast of the Si QDs in living cells by following the exciton PL. We also show that the prepared QDs do not provoke any cytoxicity effects while penetrating into the cells and efficiently accumulating near the cell membrane and in the cytoplasm. Combined with the possibility of enabling parallel therapeutic channels, ultrapure laser-synthesized Si nanostructures present unique object for cancer theranostic applications.
Auxin plays a pivotal role in virtually every aspect of plant morphogenesis. It simultaneously orchestrates a diverse variety of processes such as cell wall biogenesis, transition through the cell ...cycle, or metabolism of a wide range of chemical substances. The coordination principles for such a complex orchestration are poorly understood at the systems level. Here, we perform an RNA-seq experiment to study the transcriptional response to auxin treatment within gene groups of different biological processes, molecular functions, or cell components in a quantitative fold-change-specific manner. We find for Arabidopsis thaliana roots treated with auxin for 6 h that (i) there are functional groups within which genes respond to auxin with a surprisingly similar fold changes and that (ii) these fold changes vary from one group to another. These findings make it tempting to conjecture the existence of some transcriptional logic orchestrating the coordinated expression of genes within functional groups in a fold-change-specific manner. To obtain some initial insight about this coordinated expression, we performed a motif enrichment analysis and found cis-regulatory elements TBX1-3, SBX, REG, and TCP/site2 as the candidates conferring fold-change-specific responses to auxin in Arabidopsis thaliana.
