Designing Cultures of Care brings together an international selection of design researchers who, through a variety of design approaches, are exploring the ways in which design intersects with ...cultures of care. Unique in its focus and disciplinary diversity, this edited collection develops an expanded discourse on the role and contribution of design to our broader social, cultural, and material challenges. Based around a unifying critique of the proposition of care as a theoretical framework for undertaking design research in real world contexts, each chapter presents a case study of design research in action. This book aims to provide readers — both academics and practitioners — with insights into the possibilities and challenges of designing cultures of care. The disciplines represented in this collection include architecture, visual communication, participatory and social design, service design, critical and speculative design interventions, and design ethnography. These case studies will provide real world insights that have relevance and value to design students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and to researchers at all levels within and outside of the academy.

Unconcerned with boundaries of space or time, this is an atlas of travel through disparate locations, bound together through both the view and the recording actions of the vernacular cartographer. ...The aim of this vernacular cartographer is not to create a map or representation of place that has any illusions of truth or longevity; rather, I embrace the material and transitory nature of things and beings as they move in peripheral relation to each other and to particular spaces and places over time. Within the fields of cartography, geography and other allied domains of art and design, there is a mapping tradition of integrating the elements of time, space, and motion–often through walking–in the representation of place. In such works, the maps that are the outcome of these walking interventions are realized in one of two ways: firstly as documentation of the markings of the body as it moves in space, or secondly as the view from the body as it records the landscape that is encountered throughout the duration of the journey (Vaughan 2011).
To build a bridge between the two special issues on narrative cartography, the editorial team commissioned an essay by Denis Wood that is featured in both journals. The eleven notes that make up this ...NANO special issue explore, often in unconventional ways, the power, form, and presence (or absence) of maps as devices for narrating both personal and social landscapes. In Mapping: Ways of Representing the World, Dorling states “when map compilation of many different groups of people is examined in detail, cartographers can arrive at an uncomfortable conclusion: ‘it is difficult to hold unquestioning the belief that there are certain objects called maps, which most, if not all, human groups use to communicate information about the location of geographical features’ Dorling here quotes Ben Orlove’s “The Ethnography of Maps,” 29.
Purpose:
This article proposes and demonstrates a design anthropological approach to hospital design and architecture and engages this approach to advance recent discussions of the question of ...designing for staff breaks.
Background:
We respond to calls for attention to sensory and experiential dimensions of hospital architecture and design through social science approaches and to research into the sensory environments for staff breaks.
Method:
Design anthropology enables us to surface the experiential and unspoken knowledge and practice of hospital staff, which is inaccessible through conventional consultations, quantitative post-occupancy evaluation surveys, or traditional interviews. We draw on ethnographic research into the everyday experience, improvisatory activity, and imagined futures of staff working in the psychiatric department of a large new architecturally designed hospital in Australia.
Results:
We argue that while the sensory aspects of hospital design conventionally cited—such as light and green areas—are relevant, attention to staff priorities that emerge in practice reveals that well-being is contingent on other qualities and resources.
Conclusions:
This suggests a refocus, away from the idea that environments impact on staff to create well-being, to understanding how staff improvise to create environments of well-being. We outline the implications of this research for an agenda for design for well-being in which architects and designers are often constrained by generic design briefs to argue for a shift in policy that attends more deeply to staff as future users of hospital designs.

This article examines how a sense of home can be created in complex clinical healthcare contexts for vulnerable patients. While existing research in this field focuses mainly on patient experience, ...we take a design anthropological approach to advance the discussion by examining how healthcare staff participate as "everyday designers," who improvise to create circumstances for homeliness. We draw on ethnographic research undertaken in the Older Persons Unit (OPU) of a Psychiatric Department, before and after the Unit's move from an older facility to a newly built large regional hospital in Australia. We propose that the ongoing everyday designing of homeliness by hospital staff, in collaboration with patients, is an element of care that contributes significantly to bringing the feeling of "home," and the sense of comfort associated with it, into a clinical environment.
This text discusses the proposition that walking is a particular method of mapping, a method or methodology that is both an act of mapping and a means for creating mapping outcomes. In particular, I ...focus on the way that artists and other creative practitioners engage with these acts of walking and mapping in the realisation of their creative works. The intention is to explore and consider the complexity of and performative nature of mapping, and the experience and meaning of such practices on our understanding of place.

In this article we directly address the question of atmosphere in a psychiatric inpatient unit, focussing on the particular role that forms of care delivered 'on the move' play in shaping that ...atmosphere. Our approach, based in sensory ethnography, foregrounds the perspective of the staff who work in this environment, showing how they enact care via mobile, sensory and spatial expertize. In particular, we focus on the role of anticipation and movement in how people apprehend and try to shape the atmosphere of hospital wards. We argue that this points towards the need for a shift in our thinking about designing environments of care, one that accounts for the contingent atmospheres that so often characterize them. This also offers a way forward for designers to allow people in the wards to ongoingly constitute atmospheres of care in these distinctive surroundings.
