There are plenty of organizations from private, public and nonpublic areas dealing with the current world development crisis. Some studies have shown alternative systems of use of social and ...complementary currencies. This paper aims to analyze the social currency used by one a development bank to improve local economy in a poor community in Brazil, using a specific social technology (ST) . We applied an ethnographic approach to the oldest and biggest Brazilian Community Bank (Banco Palmas) and highlight the Palmas social currency creation process and use. This research has allowed the identification of patterns that make possible the ST dissemination to other nonpublic organizations. The results have demonstrated that community banks and their social currencies can play a pervasive role regarding local development, as an effective economic solution technology to reach other disfavored groups. We argue that the reapplication process close social currency use to ST concept.
Abstract
Several cities around the world have been developing specific strategic plans to foster urban resilience. These plans, which are known as urban resilience strategies, do not follow a default ...format; however, they do follow similar patterns when they are designed by cities within a given collaborative network, such as the Resilient Cities Network (R-Cities). This study will identify the predominant sectors considered by the Brazilian city of Salvador’s resilience strategy, based on actions, shocks, and stresses, and will compare these with the sectors considered the most by other cities within the R-Cities. The results demonstrate that when urban resilience increases, the resilience strategies of the cities studied, which include Salvador, place particular importance on the social and urban planning sectors. The predominance of both sectors reveals the importance of maintaining a broad view when developing strategic urban plans and acts as an alert for urban planners on the importance of analyzing urban resilience holistically, beyond building safe infrastructure. In addition, this study will highlight the importance of including resilience as a guiding theme in urban planning agendas and when developing public policies to prevent risk and develop infrastructure plans. All aspects and sectors of social and urban planning that are fundamental to building urban resilience must be involved.
Rare diseases are characterized by a wide diversity of signs and symptoms and vary not only from disease to disease but also from person to person, and living with a disease leads patients to ...peculiar experiences, without limits of time and space, as they extend to various environments and relationships of their lives. Therefore, the objective of this study is the theoretical interaction between value co-creation (VC) and the stakeholder theory (ST) with the shared decision-making (SDM) health care theory, to enable the analysis of the relationships between patients and their stakeholders in the co-creation of value for decision-making focused on the patient’s quality of life. It is configured as a multi-paradigmatic proposal by enabling the analysis of multiple perspectives of different stakeholders in health care. Thus, co-created decision-making (CDM) emerges with emphasis on interactivity of the relationships. As previous studies have already highlighted the importance of holistic care, seeing the patient as a whole and not just the body, studies with CDM will be beneficial for analyses that go beyond the clinical office and doctor–patient relationships, extending to all environments and interactions that add value to the patient’s treatment. It was concluded that the essence of this new theory proposed here is neither in patient-centered care nor in patient self-care, but in co-created relationships with and between stakeholders, including non-health care environments that are important to the patient, such as relationships with friends, family, other patients with the same disease, social media, public policies, and the practice of pleasurable activities.
Abstract
Urban resilience is the ability of a city to return or maintain its full functioning in the face of some unexpected or usual disruption. Several cities around the world have sought to ...achieve urban resilience considering a scenario of several challenges related to climate change and the growing population demand. The built environment needs to adapt and innovate its way of building in order to absorb the concepts of resilience and to produce changes in the current production model of construction. In addition, it is important to evaluate the urban context of each city, since urban resilience strategies adopted in a given place do not necessarily meet the needs of other places. Therefore, this work aims to analyse urban resilience actions applied and applicable to the built environment of the city of Salvador - Bahia - Brazil, in view of studies and practices identified in the world. To this end, a systematic literature review, a documental analysis, and semi-structured interviews with agents of academia, industry, and local government were carried out. As a result, actions at the local and global levels were identified and categorized. Then, these actions were analysed based on the perception and experience of the interviewees. Finally, a current overview of particularities, difficulties, and opportunities for improvement on the urban resilience actions applied and applicable to the built environment of the city of Salvador was obtained, to better direct the actions of the regional construction industry.
Purpose
The clean development mechanism (CDM) project is a cost-effective instrument to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and to transfer technology and capital from industrialized to developing ...countries. HRM practices are important sustainable development co-benefits of CDM projects and Brazil is the third largest CDM project developer in the world. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the HRM practices declared by Brazilian CDM projects and how these practices have been, in fact, implemented by the proponents of these projects.
Design/methodology/approach
A mixed methodology was developed, based especially on qualitative and quantitative methods, in the Brazilian context.
Findings
The authors found that CDM activities are improving recruitment, human resource participation and training practices in Brazilian companies, influencing the integration of environmental management into HRM practices – green HRM. In addition, the study presents hints of interesting avenues to explore in further studies. For example, why is it that some organizations are able to change the routines associated with organizational learning and/or culture while others are not.
Originality/value
The overall results suggested that there is further potential within GHG emissions reduction projects to improve green HRM.

Abstract Reflecting about the future of Earth and its inhabitants is essential to ensure a possible tomorrow. Therefore, socio-environmental impact shall become a universal and inevitable concern of ...researchers, educational institutions and scientific research regulatory agencies. Social and environmental impacts, in all senses, must be considered into any production of knowledge. Some questions help incorporate this conduct in academic research: How can research ensure effective socio-environmental impacts on society? What is the best way to conduct research so that it has positive social and environmental impacts from the beginning? How can research be fully dedicated to generating positive socio-environmental impacts in every step? We concluded that socio-environmental impacts must be considered just as much or even more important than those of socioeconomic and technological nature.

The previsions say that the semiarid regions in the world are between the most impacted by the global climate change. In Brazil, among the environmental (lost of biodiversity, extreme droughts), ...social (migrations, diseases exposition) and economics (reduction on income generation, in employment rates, and in the Gross Domestic Product) of global warming, it is affirmed strong pressures specially over the agriculture and livestock, the mainly subsistence resource in Brazilian semiarid region, because of the increase of the rain irregularity and increase of evaporation. However, it is possible to believe that the many projects that are being developed by the social movement of convivial with the semiarid could play an important act in the climate change mitigation and adaptation, and also in the region development. In this paper, one of this initiatives is presented, the Policultura no Semiárido (multiple cultivation in semiarid), developed by Instituto de Permacultura da Bahia that used simple technologies, evolving the local and the experts knowledge, contribute to Human Development in 65 rural communities in four municipalities in semiarid region at Bahia state, bringing new ways to adapt to the climate reality, with less green house emission, and with the improvement of life conditions.
