En este trabajo se presentan los primeros resultados de las investigaciones que se están desarrollando en el entorno del Cabezo Ventura de Cartagena. Este cabezo se erige desde una posición ...predominante en el campo de Cartagena, a medio camino entre el Mar Menor, la Sierra Minera Cartagena-La Unión y la península sobre la que se fundaría la ciudad púnica de Qart-Hadasht. En él se han definido distintas áreas arqueológicas en las últimas décadas, si bien durante unos sondeos arqueológicos de tipo mecánico se halló en uno de los sectores una serie de evidencias materiales correspondientes a la Primera Edad del Hierro. Este trabajo presenta por primera vez estos materiales arqueológicos, inéditos hasta la fecha, así como los resultados de la prospección arqueológica que se realizó durante el año 2017 para evaluar el alcance de esta ocupación protohistórica del Cabezo y su importancia dentro de un territorio mal conocido hasta la fecha pero que se encuentra directamente relacionado con la costa y los tráficos comerciales que por ella discurrieron.
En el último período del Bronce Final se configuran en el Sureste ibérico una serie de asentamientos de gran entidad y dinamismo interno caracterizados por una inicial ordenación dispersa, ...materializada después en un urbanismo polinuclear y una destacada organización sociopolítica que pervive durante la Edad del Hierro. En este contexto, este artículo analiza el desarrollo de ese tipo de patrón de ocupación sobre diferentes complejos poblacionales establecidos a lo largo de la cuenca del Segura, profundizando especialmente en nuevos datos procedentes de El Castellar de Librilla que arrojan luz sobre el desarrollo de su estructura espacial intraurbana. Las zonas de hábitat detectadas en las recientes intervenciones arqueológicas, algunas delimitadas por sistemas defensivos de envergadura, confirman las transformaciones que, desde el Bronce Final hasta el Ibérico Pleno, se producen en su configuración interna. Estos episodios de reestructuración y sinecismo urbanístico evidencian los procesos de adaptación que estos asentamientos polinucleares desarrollaron en el marco de las cambiantes dinámicas territoriales y culturales de la región durante el I milenio a.C.
Excavations at Ashdod‐Yam exposed a fortification system that features a massive mudbrick wall with large earthen ramparts laid on either side. This fortified horseshoe‐shaped enclosure once ...surrounded what was likely a human‐made harbor and an adjacent acropolis with complex earthen architecture, constructed and active during Iron Age IIB–C (eighth–seventh centuries B.C.E.). These Iron Age public structures are at the center of the current research. In this paper, we present the geoarchaeological analyses of Ashdod‐Yam's earthen architecture. We applied a multidisciplinary methodology to new evidence for mudbrick manufacture with the goal of understanding the relationship between governing bodies and craftsmen. The analyses combine X‐ray fluorescence, loss on ignition, environmental scanning electron microscopy, and thin‐section petrography to investigate raw material procurement, manufacturing choices, and labor organization at Ashdod‐Yam during Iron IIB–C. Construction techniques and the standardization of the mudbrick recipe point to a local enterprise regarding the site's public earthen architecture. Furthermore, the degree of labor organization must have been closely observed and supervised by a central political power. Thus, it is argued here that construction and maintenance of the site was carried out by the kingdom of Ashdod, either as a part of its own local initiative or on behalf of the Neo‐Assyrian empire.
Mudbrick constructions are extremely common in ancient western Asia, including the 1st millennium structures of the southern Caucasus and Armenian highlands. However, in the Caucasus the ...geoarchaeological study of these materials to provide insight into building practices and social structure is a topic little researched, especially when focusing on the longue durée. Artashat/Artaxata (Ararat region, Armenia) was the capital of the Armenian Kingdom of the Artaxiads, founded in the eighties of the 2nd century BC, but even before this the site was occupied in the Chalcolithic period, (ca. 5200-3500 BC), Early Iron Age (ca. 1200-900 BC) and in the Urartian period (ca. 800-600 BC) as well. All the previous occupation phases showed communities that made extensive use of earthen constructions as determined during past and recent archaeological excavations. This multidisciplinary study seeks to examine mudbrick architecture as a proxy for environmental and social interactions during the 1st millennium BC combining geoarchaeology, archaeobotany and building archaeology. We analyzed changes and continuities in architectural form and practices, alongside reconstruction of technological and social processes, to identify issues of raw material procurement, attestation of re-use, and consistency of building practices. The results of the geoarchaeological analysis of the earthen building materials used in different parts of the ancient city point to a re-use of materials over time.

Los recientes trabajos de campo desarrollados en la rambla de Algeciras han permitido documentar la intensa y heterogénea ocupación de esta área en época argárica (2200-1550 a. C.). A pesar de la ...profunda alteración antrópica que ha sufrido este entorno, los resultados obtenidos mediante prospección selectiva, excavación arqueológica y revisión de contextos antiguos apuntan a la existencia de un importante foco de concentración poblacional que, con probabilidad, debió mantener una estrecha relación con el cercano núcleo de La Almoloya. El análisis de los distintos tipos de asentamiento identificados dibuja un patrón de ocupación y explotación intensivo del territorio, así como la existencia de diversas posiciones dedicadas a labores de control y vigilancia del entorno inmediato. A partir de una lectura multiescalar, el objetivo de este trabajo es discutir los resultados obtenidos y plantear qué papel pudo desarrollar este conjunto de asentamientos en el marco de las entidades políticas y territoriales propuestas para el sureste de la Península Ibérica durante el Bronce Argárico.
El Sureste de la Península Ibérica experimentó durante el Bronce Final significativos procesos de reordenación poblacional visibles en la configuración espacial de sus asentamientos y en el nuevo ...paisaje político-territorial de la región. En el caso de la vega baja del Segura, el abandono de parte de los asentamientos postargáricos propició una orientación del poblamiento hacia nuevas posiciones en altura, bien interconectadas y estrechamente ligadas con las capacidades productivas de sus entornos. Paradigma de tales procesos es el asentamiento de Cobatillas la Vieja, inserto en un paisaje de amplia biodiversidad y relaciones territoriales arraigadas en épocas previas que facilitaron su reocupación en el nuevo escenario sociopolítico y económico de la zona. El análisis de tales circunstancias desde el prisma de la arqueología del paisaje, en conjunción con el estudio de la territorialidad e identidad de su materialidad, constituye el objetivo de este trabajo. Como resultado se pone de manifiesto la importancia de este enclave y su contextualización con el resto de centros cercanos con el fin de delimitar las problemáticas particulares que se dieron en las primeras etapas del Bronce Final en el Bajo Segura.
Este trabajo analiza una selección de contenedores cerámicos modelados a mano cuya caracterización petrográfica apunta a un origen exógeno respecto a los asentamientos en los que han sido ...localizados. Esta problemática abre diferentes interrogantes en torno a la movilidad de este tipo de envases en el Sureste ibérico durante el Hierro Antiguo, a la vez que amplía las posibilidades de estas vajillas tradicionalmente vinculadas a producciones locales y espacios domésticos. ENGLISH: This paper analyzes a selection of handmade pots whose petrographic characterization reveals an exogenous origin with respect to the settlements in which they were found. This situation opens up different questions regarding the mobility of this type of ceramic container in the Iberian Southeast during the Early Iron Age, as well as expanding the possibilities of these wares traditionally linked to local production and domestic spaces.
The use of mudbricks in Early Iron Age ramparts is an uneven feature of defensive architecture on the Iberian Peninsula. The use of mudbricks as a building material has been linked to the arrival of ...Levantine building traditions with the Phoenicians, and its appearance among local societies varies between the eighth and sixth centuries BC according to the public or domestic nature of the structures. In this article, we present the geoarchaeological analyses of the mudbricks used in constructing one of the defensive towers or bastions at Villares de la Encarnación (Caravaca de la Cruz, Spain). This site, endowed with two complex fortification lines and towers, is one of the main settlements for understanding the development of the Early Iron Age among the inland and mountain communities of the region. The analytical program includes wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence, CHN elemental analysis, and thin-section petrography and provides new data about soil procurement and manufacturing choices. These results highlight the technical and social complexity behind mudbrick constructions and the adoption of new earthen practices among Early Iron Age communities in order to build more imposing and elevated towers that might convey an image of the power and strength of these inland settlements.
The establishment of Phoenician colonies in the Iberian Southeast from the 8th century BC led to a significant increase in productive and commercial activities with the autochthonous communities. ...However, prestige goods of high value destined for reduced consumption groups also circulated within these networks. The presence of a scarab found during an archaeological survey in the settlement of Castellar de Librilla (Librilla, Región de Murcia) reveals the inclusion of certain autochthonous elites in these circuits. This paper discusses the context, typological classification and comparative analysis of the scarab to better determine its origin and chronological framework. The incorporation of new archaeometric data through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), focused on the gold bezel setting in which the scarab is set, has been essential to improving our understanding of this piece of personal adornment. The results of the iconographic and microanalytic study point to the exceptional value of this artefact, which make it possible to recognise the participation and agency of the autochthonous elites of Castellar de Librilla in the commercial systems of Mediterranean prestige goods.
