Genomic Selection (GS) has allowed the maximization of genetic gains per unit time in several annual and perennial plant species. However, no GS studies have addressed
, the most economically ...important species of the genus
. Therefore, this study aimed (i) to evaluate the applicability and accuracy of GS in the prediction of the genomic estimated breeding value (GEBV); (ii) to estimate the genetic parameters; and (iii) to evaluate the time reduction of the selection cycle by GS in Arabica coffee breeding. A total of 195 Arabica coffee individuals, belonging to 13 families in generation of F
, susceptible backcross and resistant backcross, were phenotyped for 18 agronomic traits, and genotyped with 21,211 SNP molecular markers. Phenotypic data, measured in 2014, 2015, and 2016, were analyzed by mixed models. GS analyses were performed by the G-BLUP method, using the RKHS (Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces) procedure, with a Bayesian algorithm. Heritabilities and selective accuracies were estimated, revealing moderate to high magnitude for most of the traits evaluated. Results of GS analyses showed the possibility of reducing the cycle time by 50%, maximizing selection gains per unit time. The effect of marker density on GS analyses was evaluated. Genomic selection proved to be promising for
breeding. The agronomic traits presented high complexity for they are controlled by several QTL and showed low genomic heritabilities, evidencing the need to incorporate genomic selection methodologies to the breeding programs of this species.
Abstract In this study the TIG process was used to perform the surface treatment of Nickel-Aluminium Bronze alloy (C63280), the main material used in the industry for the manufacture of naval ...propellers. The process was applied in specimens obtained from a propeller blade at different current pulsation frequencies (2, 5, 6, 12 Hz and 30 kHz) and without pulsation. The treatments were submitted to microstructural and microhardness analysis, and the results were compared to the material without any treatment. As for the microstructural aspect, all treatments resulted in grain refining, as this aspect is more accentuated for the frequency of 6Hz. The analysis also revealed a lower volume of the α phase in all treatments, which was evidenced upon investigation of the microhardness, with dispersion of the β phase in all samples and the k phase in some samples. The results show a greater uniformity in the microhardness in the treated zone due to grain refining. However, when comparing the average microhardness with the microhardness of the reference material, a significant increase of the microhardness was reached only at the frequency of 6Hz.

This work explores the preparation of ionic liquid (IL)-based semi-interpenetrating polymer network (sIPN) membranes composed of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) network and linear nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), incorporating up to 66 wt% of three ILs with a common cation (C2mim+) and different anions (C(CN)3–, NTf2– and FSI–). All sIPN/IL membranes were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and puncture tests. Ideal CO2/N2 and CO2/H2 separation performances of the prepared sIPN/IL membranes were investigated at T = 20 °C and 35 °C, respectively, and 1 bar of feed pressure.
The incorporation of both C2mimNTf2 and C2mimFSI ILs allowed to obtain sIPN/IL membranes with higher IL contents (66 wt%) compared to previously reported PIL–IL membranes with similar IL structures (40 wt%). The membranes containing NTf2– and C(CN)3– anions showed improved thermal stability compared to the neat PEO/NBR sIPN, being thermally stable up to 300 °C. Although sIPN/IL membrane mechanical properties were affected by the incorporation of IL, all membranes revealed high elongation properties (elongation upon puncture = 68–170%), mainly due to the presence of NBR component in the sIPN structure. The highest CO2/N2 permselectivity was obtained for the sIPN/66 wt% C2mimC(CN)3 membrane, while the sIPN/66 wt% C2mimFSI membrane revealed the highest CO2 and N2 permeabilities. The incorporation of 66 wt% of C2mimFSI into the sIPN also showed superior CO2/H2 separation performance, with a CO2 permeability of 727 Barrer and a CO2/H2 permselectivity of 10.9.
Breeding programs of the species Coffea canephora rely heavily on the significant genetic variability between and within its two varietal groups (conilon and robusta). The use of hybrid families and ...individuals has been less common. The objectives of this study were to evaluate parents and families from the populations of conilon, robusta, and its hybrids and to define the best breeding and selection strategies for productivity and disease resistance traits. As such, 71 conilon clones, 56 robusta clones, and 20 hybrid families were evaluated over several years for the following traits: vegetative vigor, incidence of rust and cercosporiosis, fruit ripening time, fruit size, plant height, canopy diameter, and yield per plant. Components of variance and genetic parameters were estimated via residual maximum likelihood (REML) and genotypic values were predicted via best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP). Genetic variability among parents (clones) and hybrid families was detected for most of the evaluated traits. The Mulamba-Rank index suggests potential gains up to 17% for the genotypic aggregate of traits in the hybrid population. An intrapopulation recurrent selection within the hybrid population would be the best breeding strategy because the genetic variability, narrow and broad senses heritabilities and selective accuracies for important traits were maximized in the crossed population. Besides, such strategy is simple, low cost and quicker than the concurrent reciprocal recurrent selection in the two parental populations, and this maximizes the genetic gain for unit of time.

A new atom economical approach for the preparation of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines can be achieved by means of the intramolecular hydroaminomethylation of 2-isopropenylanilines, mediated by an ionic ...diamino rhodium catalyst that does not require phosphine--this reaction is highly chemo- and regioselective, and it occurs in good isolated yields.
Abstract
This article examines the phenomenon of self‐exploitation among platform couriers, using the company Glovo as a case study. The research, based on a qualitative approach with interviews from ...22 different stakeholders, highlights the ways in which precarity, entrepreneurial subjectivity, and gamification intersect to create what are referred to as postdisciplinary control mechanisms. These mechanisms shift the locus of exploitation from the employer to the workers' inner selves, which are compelled to follow implicit guidelines due to their precarious situation. The use of algorithmic management by platform companies like Glovo plays a major role in this architecture marked by overwork, exposure to hazardous conditions, and economic dependence. The article urges policymakers to look beyond platform workers' employment status debate and address the design of algorithms and broader forms of labour precarity, so that policies that successfully improve workers' experience are designed.

Advances in the dynamic response of welding power sources have allowed the use of pulsed current at frequencies above 20 kHz. However, the effects of pulsing the welding current at these ...high-frequency levels are not well known, especially those associated with the voltaic arc. Thus, the aim of this study was to carry out experimental research on a pulsating welding current at ultra-high frequencies focusing on two important voltaic arc parameters in gas tungsten arc welding processes: arc voltage and arc stagnation pressure. The tests were performed with a welding current pulsed at frequencies of 20 to 80 kHz and amplitudes of 0 to 50 A. The results indicated that pulsing the current at ultra-high frequencies leads to a reduction in the average arc voltage, increasing the stagnation pressure and the arc constriction. Regarding the weld bead dimensional aspects, greater values of width and penetration were obtained when the high-frequency current pulsation was applied.
This work investigates the effects of transverse arc oscillation in gas metal arc welding (GMAW) with metal transfer by short circuit using the AISI 316L alloy as the base metal. For this purpose, ...the influence of the oscillation frequency (
f
) and the wire-feed speed (
V
a
) at three levels was analyzed, keeping a constant triangular weaving pattern and a fixed welding speed. The results show that an increase in oscillation frequency leads to an increase in the resulting welding speed, resulting in lower welding energy. Regarding weld bead morphology, the transverse arc oscillation reduced the reinforcement, the wetting angle, the penetration and the convexity index (CI < 30%). On the other hand, higher dilution values were obtained. Finally, a clear microstructure refinement tendency became evident when applying the weaving technique.
