We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson (H) in ppbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV in events containing a charged lepton (ell), missing transverse energy, and at least two jets, using ...5.4 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity recorded with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. This analysis is sensitive primarily to Higgs bosons produced through the fusion of two gluons or two electroweak bosons, with subsequent decay W->WW->ell+nu+q'qbar, where ell is an electron or muon. The search is also sensitive to contributions from other production channels, such as WH->ell+nu+bbbar In the absence of signal, we set limits at the 95% C.L. on the cross section for H production sigma(ppbar->H+X) in these final states. For a mass of MH=160 GeV, the limit is a factor of 3.9 larger than the cross section in the standard model, and consistent with expectation.
We report results from a search for neutral Higgs bosons produced in association with b quarks using data recorded by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider and corresponding to an ...integrated luminosity of 7.3 fb-1. This production mode can be enhanced in several extensions of the standard model (SM) such as in its minimal supersymmetric extension (MSSM) at high tanBeta. We search for Higgs bosons decaying to tau pairs with one tau decaying to a muon and neutrinos and the other to hadrons. The data are found to be consistent with SM expectations, and we set upper limits on the cross section times branching ratio in the Higgs boson mass range from 90 to 320 GeV/c2. We interpret our result in the MSSM parameter space, excluding tanBeta values down to 25 for Higgs boson masses below 170 GeV/c2.
We present a measurement of the ttbar production cross section sigma(ttbar) in ppbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV using 5.4 fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected with the D0 detector. We ...consider final states with at least two jets and two leptons (ee, emu, mumu), and events with one jet for the the emu final state as well. The measured cross section is sigma(ttbar)= 7.36 +0.90-0.79 (stat + syst) pb. This result combined with the cross section measurement in the lepton + jets final state yields sigma(ttbar)=7.56 +0.63-0.56 (stat + syst) pb, which agrees with the standard model expectation. The relative precision of 8% of this measurement is comparable to the latest theoretical calculations.
A search for single top production (e(+)e(-) --> t (c) over bar) via flavour changing neutral currents (FCNC) was performed using the data taken by the DELPHI detector at LEP2. We report evidence for a narrow structure, X(5568), in the decay sequence X(5568)→B_{s}^{0}π^{±}, B_{s}^{0}→J/ψϕ, J/ψ→μ^{+}μ^{-}, ϕ→K^{+}K^{-}. This is evidence for the first instance of a hadronic ...state with valence quarks of four different flavors. The mass and natural width of this state are measured to be m=5567.8±2.9(stat)_{-1.9}^{+0.9}(syst) MeV/c^{2} and Γ=21.9±6.4(stat)_{-2.5}^{+5.0}(syst) MeV/c^{2}. If the decay is X(5568)→B_{s}^{*}π^{±}→B_{s}^{0}γπ^{±} with an unseen γ, m(X(5568)) will be shifted up by m(B_{s}^{*})-m(B_{s}^{0})∼49 MeV/c^{2}. This measurement is based on 10.4 fb^{-1} of ppover ¯ collision data at sqrts=1.96 TeV collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron collider.
The DNA microarray technology has arguably caught the attention of the worldwide life science community and is now systematically supporting major discoveries in many fields of study. The majority of ...the initial technical challenges of conducting experiments are being resolved, only to be replaced with new informatics hurdles, including statistical analysis, data visualization, interpretation, and storage. Two systems of databases, one containing expression data and one containing annotation data are quickly becoming essential knowledge repositories of the research community. This present paper surveys several databases, which are considered "pillars" of research and important nodes in the network. This paper focuses on a generalized workflow scheme typical for microarray experiments using two examples related to cancer research. The workflow is used to reference appropriate databases and tools for each step in the process of array experimentation. Additionally, benefits and drawbacks of current array databases are addressed, and suggestions are made for their improvement.
Este libro es el resultado y culminación de una experiencia docente de varios años en la que se ha puesto en práctica y testado cada uno de sus contenidos en diversas asignaturas de grado y máster en ...la UCM y la UAM.Pretende ser una obra introductoria que posibilite la aproximación del gran público al interesante, a la par que escurridizo, fenómeno argumentativo. Para ello, los AUes han decidido presentar los conceptos y escuelas fundamentales de la teoría de la argumentación empleando como recurso ilustrativo fundamental el filme 12 Angry Men de Sidney Lumet (1957). No han pretendido crear un manual académico sino, más bien, proponer un pequeño viaje, a medio camino entre la ficción y la teoría, a través del cual cualquier interesado pueda adentrarse en el terreno de la argumentación de la forma más amena posible.En este viaje se realizan cinco paradas. En el primer capítulo el lector encontrará el “equipaje" indispensable para el trayecto, es decir, nociones básicas sobre: qué es un argumento y de qué está compuesto; cómo podemos combinarlos y en qué contextos los utilizamos; o qué diferencia un buen argumento de uno malo. El resto de los capítulos están dedicados a las propuestas que, de un modo u otro, han marcado la historia de la moderna teoría de la argumentación. En el Capítulo 2 se explica el famoso Modelo de Toulmin, propuesto por S. Toulmin en Los Usos de la Argumentación (1957). El Capítulo 3 está dedicado a la teoría pragmadialéctica de la argumentación, una de las corrientes más influyentes en los estudios actuales sobre argumentación. En el Capítulo 4 se presenta otra de las escuelas pioneras, la lógica informal canadiense, a través de la obra de Douglas N. Walton. Y, finalmente, en el Capítulo 5 se repasa la aproximación formalista o clásica a la argumentación. Javier Vilanova Arias, es profesor titular en la facultad de Filosofía de la UCM, donde, desde 1997, ha impartido asignaturas como Lógica, Filosofía del Lenguaje, Filosofía de la Lógica o Teoría de la Argumentación. Actualmente se concentra en la práctica de una “filosofía para todos", que se abra a un público amplio sin perder profundidad ni rigor. En esta línea ha publicado obras como: Al menos sé que sé algo: estrategias argumentativas para fundamentar el conocimiento (2015), Filosofía de Sentido Común (2021) o Hechos y preguntas sobre el conejo pato y otras piezas de filosofía ficción (2022).Antonio Duarte Calvo es profesor ayudante doctor en la facultad de Filosofía de la UCM. Desde 2014 forma parte del Departamento de Lógica y Filosofía Teórica, especializándose desde entonces en la docencia de Filosofía de la Ciencia, Epistemología e Historia de las Ciencias y Teoría de la Argumentación. Sus líneas de investigación orbitan en torno al razonamiento abductivo y la argumentación. Actualmente centra su trabajo en el estudio de la creatividad desde una perspectiva interdisciplinar y en el análisis argumentativo de los discursos públicos.José Alhambra Delgado es investigador en formación en la facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la UAM. Graduado en Filosofía por la UCM, con Máster en Lógica y Filosofía de la Ciencia por la USAL, en la actualidad realiza estudios de doctorado, para lo cual disfruta de un contrato pre-doctoral para la formación del personal investigador (FPI-UAM). Su investigación se centra en la argumentación por analogía y su uso en la evaluación lógica de argumentos.Marcia Martínez García es investigadora en formación en la facultad de Filosofía de la UCM. Actualmente cursa su doctorado con un contrato predoctoral (FPU) dentro del departamento de Lógica y Filosofía Teórica de la UCM. Graduada en Bellas Artes y Filosofía, con Máster de Epistemología de las Ciencias Naturales y Sociales, ha disfrutado también de la beca de introducción a la investigación JaeIntro del CSIC. Su proyecto doctoral versa sobre las aportaciones de S. Toulmin en las áreas de la Lógica Informal y la Epistemología contemporánea.
Oscillations in the B-s(0)- <(B-s(0))over bar> system were studied in events selected from about 4.3 million hadronic Z(0) decays registered by DELPHI between 1992 and 2000. This paper presents ...updates of two published analyses (11, 12). The first analysis, which utilizes leptons emitted with large momentum transverse to a jet, was improved by means of a better algorithm for the vertex reconstuction and a new algorithm for flavour-tagging at production time. The second analysis, which utilizes D-s-lepton events, was improved by optimizing the treatment of proper time resolution. No signal of B-s(0) oscillations was observed and limits on the mass difference between the physical B-s(0) states were obtained to be: Deltam(s)>8.0 ps-1 at the 95% C.L. with a sensitivity of Deltam(s)= 9.1 ps(-1) in the high p(t) lepton analysis and Deltam(s)>4.9 ps(-1) at the 95% C.L. with a sensitivity of Deltam(s)=8.6 ps(-1) in the D-s-lepton analysis. Previously published results on these analyses are superseded. The combination of these results with those obtained in other independent analyses previously performed in DELPHI (D-s-hadron, exclusive B-s(0), inclusive vertex) gives: Deltam(s)>8.5 ps(-1) at the 95% C.L. with a sensitivity of Deltam(s)=12.0 ps(-1).
Functional MR imaging is the technique of choice to evaluate and manage malignant musculoskeletal masses. Advanced MR imaging sequences include chemical shift MR imaging, diffusion-weighted imaging ...with apparent diffusion coefficient mapping, MR spectroscopy imaging, and dynamic contrast-enhanced perfusion imaging. Functional MR imaging adds value to morphologic sequences in the detection, characterization, staging, and posttherapy assessment of malignant musculoskeletal malignancies. This article reviews the technical role of each functional sequence and their clinical applications to allow more confident decisions to be made. Multiparametric analysis of functional and anatomic MR sequences allows musculoskeletal tumors analysis to be improved.
