The High-Energy Particle Detector (HEPD) will measure electrons, protons and light nuclei fluxes, in low Earth orbit. This detector consists of a high precision silicon tracker, a versatile trigger ...system, a range-calorimeter and an anti-coincidence system. It is one of the instruments on board the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES). HEPD can detect multi-MeV particles trapped within the geomagnetic field. When operated at large latitudes HEPD can also detect un-trapped solar particles and low energy cosmic rays. A detailed description of the HEPD will be given.

«Se tu segui tua stella»: annotations on Dante's Argonauts · The article examines theimpact of the myth of Castor and Pollux on Dante's decision to choose the Argonauts as a symbol of the Comedy's ...third cantica. The brothers, who took part in the Argonauts' quest for the Golden Fleece, were transformed by Zeus into the constellation Gemini, the sign of the zodiac under which Dante himself was born. The poet could thus have chosen the myth of the Argonauts because he believed that the constellation of Gemini had determined his destiny as a modern Christian Argonaut. The second part of the essay analyses the opposition between Ulysses' voyage and that of the Argonauts, which Dante modelled on the account transmitted by the Historia destructionis Troiae of Guido delle Colonne. The last section of the article offers a reading of Paradiso XXVII in light of the interpretation of Castor and Pollux as Argonauts.
Automatic speech recognition systems based on end-to-end models (E2E-ASRs) can achieve comparable performance to conventional ASR systems while reproducing all their essential parts automatically, ...from speech units to the language model. However, they hide the underlying perceptual processes modelled, if any, and they have lower adaptability to multiple application contexts, and, furthermore, they require powerful hardware and an extensive amount of training data. Model-explainability techniques can explore the internal dynamics of these ASR systems and possibly understand and explain the processes conducting to their decisions and outputs. Understanding these processes can help enhance ASR performance and reduce the required training data and hardware significantly. In this paper, we probe the internal dynamics of three E2E-ASRs pre-trained for English by building an acoustic-syllable boundary detector for Italian and Spanish based on the E2E-ASRs’ internal encoding layer outputs. We demonstrate that the shallower E2E-ASR layers spontaneously form a rhythmic component correlated with prominent syllables, central in human speech processing. This finding highlights a parallel between the analysed E2E-ASRs and human speech recognition. Our results contribute to the body of knowledge by providing a human-explainable insight into behaviours encoded in popular E2E-ASR systems.
Context. The M3 dwarf GJ 581 hosts a rich system of exo-planets, some of which are potentially within or at the edge of the habitable zone. Nevertheless, the system habitability might be reduced by ...large and sterilizing high energy emission flares, if these are frequent. Aims. The GJ 581 radiation environment was studied with simultaneous X-ray and UV observations, which were performed with the XRT and UVOT instruments, respectively, on board of the Swift satellite. Methods. X-ray and UV data were analysed with the distributed standard tools. Results. The dwarf GJ 581 was detected for the first time in the 0.2−10 keV range with an intensity of (8 ± 2) × 10-4 cts/s and a signal-to-noise ratio of 3.6. If black-body or APEC spectra are assumed, then the source X-ray flux is found to be between 1.8 and 3.3 × 10-14 erg cm-2 s-1 and log10(LX) between 25.914 and 26.176. Despite hints of X-ray variability, better statistics are needed to establish robust evidence for this property. The UV measurements, obtained during 13 pointings, are also reported. A combination of these Swift X-ray and Hubble Space Telescope UV measurements (with Lyman-alpha) indicate a low X-ray to UV luminosity ratio of ~4%. Conclusions. Simultaneous X-ray and UV observations of GJ 581 are reported. These constitute an experimental view of the system radiation environment, which will be a useful input for the habitability studies of the GJ 581 planetary system.
Dark Matter (DM) as a weakly interacting massive particle could annihilate or decay and give rise to high energy gamma-rays. Then an indirect search for Dark Matter is possible by means of the Large ...Area Telescope on board the Fermi satellite. A relatively large signal is expected from the regions where the Dark Matter is expected to have the greatest density, such as the central region of the Milky Way. This region also hosts many high-energy gamma ray sources, of many different classes. Furthermore diffuse gamma-ray emission due to cosmic-ray interactions with interstellar gas and radiation is detected from the same direction. A greatly improved understanding of the gamma ray emission from the Galactic Center region is going to be obtained with the Fermi LAT first-year data. The data along with refined modelling of the diffuse emission and a careful evaluation of the discrete sources will improve our ability to disentangle a potential dark matter signal from the astrophysical background and to place new limits on the mass and annihilation rate (or lifetime) of Dark Matter particles
To report the successful application of neurally adjusted ventilatory assist to a child with cystic fibrosis who underwent single-lung transplantation.
Case report.
Pediatric cardiac intensive care ...unit.
A 15-yr-old male with cystic fibrosis was admitted to our pediatric cardiac intensive care unit after single-lung transplantation. The child had previously received two bowel resections at the age of 1 yr, right pneumonectomy at the age of 3 yrs, and endoscopic percutaneus gastrostomy at the age of 10 yrs. After transplant, the child failed several attempts of weaning off mechanical ventilation with pressure-support ventilation, due to infection, pneumothorax, and ventilator asynchrony that caused gastric distension and numerous episodes of nausea and vomiting.
Use of neurally adjusted ventilatory assist to avoid patient-ventilator dyssynchrony and consequent gastric distension.
The utilization of neurally adjusted ventilatory assist allowed to limit the risk of overassistance and prevent patient-ventilator asynchrony and to successfully wean the child off mechanical ventilation after single-lung transplant.
