Earthquake monitoring plays a key role in human life protection, especially in highly populated areas of the Earth. First indications have been found in SAMPEX and NOAA satellite data that particle ...fluxes of trapped electrons in the Van Allen belts can be correlated to seismic activity on the ground. Within the framework of the CSES mission, a systematic analysis of the electron flux, within the invariant phase space in the L-shell and equatorial pitch angle, has started with the goal to identify short-term variations of the flux (particle bursts) in conjunction with seismic activity. This analysis is based on the statistical evaluation of the flux measurements and built to be potentially implemented in an online monitoring system. The first milestone in that direction has been achieved, providing a stable background estimation. With the injection of artificial signals, the efficiency of the method was evaluated and found to be better than 95% for isolated (one per day) and short (∼3 min) signals with a significance ≥ 5σ above the background. The developed method is set up in a manner to be easily applicable to data from different instruments and satellites. This article presents the studied datasets of the low-energy HEPP instrument onboard the CSES-01 satellite and the electron telescopes of the MEPED detector onboard the NOAA POES-19 satellite, introduces the method for the background estimation, and discusses the first correlation studies of particle bursts with geomagnetic indices obtained within this framework.
The core of the High-Energy Particle Detector (HEPD) on board of the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES) is a segmented calorimeter, which is composed with an upper tower of plastic ...scintillator counters and a bottom array of LYSO large crystals. Electrons with energy below 100MeV, protons and light nuclei, below few hundreds ofMeV/nucleon are fully contained within this calorimeter. Mainly the LYSO array (density 7.3 g/cm

, thickness around 29.2 g/cm

) extends the HEPD energy range, allowing those measurements (solar energetic particles, low-energy cosmic rays) which are more related to astroparticle physics topics. Two identical copies of HEPD, and then of its calorimeter, exist: the Flight (FM) and the Qualification (QM) models. While the FM has achieved the orbit on board of the CSES satellite in February 2018, the Qualification Model, is used, at ground, for tests and calibrations. A report on the characterization of this compact particle space detector and on preliminary studies and results, will be given.
With the advent of Internet of Things (IoT) tech-nologies, there is a rapidly growing number of connected devices, producing more and more data, potentially useful for a large number of applications. ...The streams of data coming from each connected device can be seen as collections of Time Series, which need proper techniques to guarantee their persistence. In particular, these solutions must be able to provide both an effective data ingestion and data retrieval, which are challenging tasks. This problem is particularly sensible in the Industrial IoT (IIoT) context, given the potentially great number of equipment that could be instrumented with sensors generating time series. In this study we present the results of an empirical comparison of three NoSQL Database Management Systems, namely Cassandra, MongoDB and InfluxDB, in maintaining and retrieving gigabytes of real IIoT data, collected from an instrumented dressing machine. Results show that, for our specific Time Series dataset, InfluxDB is able to outperform Cassandra in all the considered tests, and has better overall performance respect to MongoDB.
Lung ultrasonography is a diagnostic tool increasingly used in critical care. Few data are available for the pediatric population. We describe our experience with lung ultrasonography for 5 pediatric ...patients with common post–cardiac surgery lung complications (pleural effusion, pneumothorax, atelectasis, pneumonia). Ultrasonography was useful also for lung recruitment. Such data were confirmed by chest radiographs or by computed tomography, or both. Lung ultrasonography can be considered as a useful, real-time, bedside tool to detect specific lung diseases, reliably implementing radiographic images and potentially decreasing the total number of radiographs in critically ill children with congenital heart diseases.
The article sets out to show the ideological significance of the quotations from Vergil, Lucan, Horace, Homer, and Ovid found in Vita Nova 16 XXV, the celebrated passage where Dante cites these poets ...as examples of personification in classical literature. In the quotations from Vergil's Aeneid, Aeolus and Juno speak to each other, and Apollo speaks to the Trojans. In his framing of the quotations, Dante appears implicitly to regard pagan deities like Aeolus, Juno, and Apollo as inanimate things, raising the question as to why the author of the Vita Nova understood pagan gods in terms of poetic tropes. Focusing on the Vergilian quotations, this essay argues that Servius's commentary to the Aeneid represents one of the major sources that might have led Dante to construe pagan deities as rhetorical personifications.
Gliomas are complex and heterogeneous tumors that originate from the glial cells of the brain. The malignant cells undergo deep modifications of their metabolism, and acquire the capacity to invade ...the brain parenchyma and to induce epigenetic modifications in the other brain cell types. In spite of the efforts made to define the pathology at the molecular level, and to set novel approaches to reach the infiltrating cells, gliomas are still fatal. In order to gain a better knowledge of the cellular events that accompany astrocyte transformation, we developed three increasingly transformed astrocyte cell lines, starting from primary rat cortical astrocytes, and analyzed them at the cytogenetic and epigenetic level. In parallel, we also studied the expression of the differentiation-related H1.0 linker histone variant to evaluate its possible modification in relation with transformation. We found that the most modified astrocytes (A-FC6) have epigenetic and chromosomal alterations typical of cancer, and that the other two clones (A-GS1 and A-VV5) have intermediate properties. Surprisingly, the differentiation-specific somatic histone H1.0 steadily increases from the normal astrocytes to the most transformed ones. As a whole, our results suggest that these three cell lines, together with the starting primary cells, constitute a potential model for studying glioma development.
Spaceborne gamma-ray telescopes are operated within a dominant background of charged particles, mainly primary cosmic rays and Earth albedo particles. Dedicated anti-coincidence devices and on-board ...rejection techniques are needed to reject this background, as well as the best available background models. The high-energy particle detector (HEPD) is a space detector for high-energy particles, which can identify electrons, protons and light nuclei in the energy range from few MeV to many hundreds of MeV, and measure their fluxes. It consists of a high-precision silicon tracker, a versatile trigger system, a range calorimeter, and an anti-coincidence system. HEPD will extend PAMELA and the AMS-02 measurements to lower energies and characterize the orbital radiation environment, then providing very useful data for the future gamma-ray mission development, especially for the optimization of the on-board background rejection.
The High-Energy Particle Detector (HEPD) is a range-calorimeter for the near-Earth measurement of electrons, protons and light nuclei fluxes up to few hundreds of MeV. HEPD will fly on board of the ...China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES), scheduled to be launched in July/August 2017. This mission will investigate possible correlations between geomagnetic properties (electromagnetic wave emissions, plasma properties and particle fluxes in the ionosphere and magnetosphere) and seismic events. The study of the solar-terrestrial environment, Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs), Solar Energetic Particles (SEPS) events and low-energy cosmic rays are also within the scientific objectives of this mission. A detailed description of the HEPD and its characteristics will be reported.
