In today's competitive world, globalization touches all industries. The open innovation (OI) paradigm has garnered increasing importance in academic research and industrial applications. Considering ...this interest, this paper aims to synthetize up-to-date findings, outline the intellectual structure of OI within the manufacturing research domain, and suggest a future research agenda. Building upon the content analysis of 239 articles indexed in Web of Science and Scopus databases, using homogeneity analysis by means of alternating least squares (HOMALS), this study reveals the theoretical underpinnings, research trends, and methodologies of this research field. Our analysis revealed that the study of sustainability, commitment-based human resource practices, and Industry 4.0 (I40) represent important future research streams for OI in the manufacturing industry. In collaborating throughout the supply chain, manufacturing firms could minimize production waste, ensure better working conditions, and adapt business models. In the “new normal” posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, it is more important than ever to study the effects of managerial competencies, employee training and development, and reward systems on open cultures in manufacturing firms. This study goes on to outline research opportunities in I40, particularly regarding knowledge exchange and technology transfer among partners and OI's influence on the adoption of I40 technologies.
•This paper provides a synthesis and outlines the trajectory of open innovation in manufacturing industries.•This study analyzes 239 publications indexed in Web of Science and Scopus databases.•Content analysis, is combined with the multiple correspondence analysis procedures.•Future research avenues regarding sustainability, human resources, and additive manufacturing are presented.
An increasing amount of research on Intelligent Systems/Artificial Intelligence (AI) in marketing has shown that AI is capable of mimicking humans and performing activities in an ‘intelligent’ ...manner. Considering the growing interest in AI among marketing researchers and practitioners, this review seeks to provide an overview of the trajectory of marketing and AI research fields. Building upon the review of 164 articles published in Web of Science and Scopus indexed journals, this article develops a context-specific research agenda. Our study of selected articles by means of Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) procedure outlines several research avenues related to the adoption, use, and acceptance of AI technology in marketing, the role of data protection and ethics, the role of institutional support for marketing AI, as well as the revolution of the labor market and marketers’ competencies.
Little research has been conducted regarding serial entrepreneurship compared to entrepreneurship research more broadly, despite research that suggests that as many as 50% of all entrepreneurs are ...serial entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurship research shows that most new ventures fail, yet serial entrepreneurs continually exit previous ventures and start new ones. Our study explores 118 scholarly articles indexed in Web of Science and Scopus databases on serial entrepreneurship through multiple correspondence analysis. Through our analysis, we identify key areas for future research, explore and consolidate the theoretical foundations used, and provide a review of academic literature for future researchers to utilize. Our perceptual map has identified four key research areas that researchers should focus upon: heuristics in entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial capabilities, the entrepreneurial ecosystem, and technological development and resources.
The proliferation of research on innovation-related coopetition calls for a more unified understanding of the current state of knowledge in this domain. Previous reviews on coopetition, however, fall ...short when it comes to putting innovation at the core of their analysis, often relegating the topic to one of the research themes/dimensions of coopetition, or considering innovation to be a promising area for future research. We fill this gap by systematically reviewing two decades of research on coopetition and innovation. We apply Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) methods to a sample of 128 articles from academic journals published in the field of coopetition and innovation, revealing the major research themes, the theories and methods used, the levels of analysis, and the contexts explored. The holistic representation of coopetition and innovation research hinges upon multiple theories, including the resource-based view, the knowledge-based view, the network view, and the behavioral view, while predominantly focusing on strategy; innovativeness; value creation, appropriation and performance; appropriability and protection; and organizational culture. Given the increasing scholarly interest in both coopetition and innovation, this study proposes fruitful research avenues, and discusses their implications for both theory and practice.
•Innovation-related coopetition has long been recognized as a source of competitive advantage.•This review provides a synthesis of the fragmented literature at the intersection between coopetition and innovation.•This review reveals the key contributions to the field and outlining emerging themes and promising future research avenues.
The adoption of Open Innovation (OI) in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) often rests on its positive evaluation from top-management teams and/or entrepreneurs. Because of the mixed outcomes ...attainable through SMEs' openness, managers must weigh the beneficial aspects of boundary-spanning against the complexities coming from inter-organizational arrangements and knowledge transfer. Building upon the tenets of dual-process theory, this study highlights the cognitive configurations leading toward willingness or reluctance of OI adoption in SMEs. This is done by investigating perceptions of barriers, benefits, and organisational resistance to openness, such as the not-invented-here (NIH) and not-shared-here (NSH) syndromes in combination with decision-makers’ cognitive styles. To shed further light on observed heterogenous outcomes and the effects of managerial cognitive configurations, this study analyses the willingness and reluctance to adopt OI among 434 managers and entrepreneurs working in SMEs. The results of combined PLS-SEM and fsQCA analyses outline different decisional paths associated with willingness and reluctance to adopt OI. Thus, this research contributes to the ‘human side of OI’ paradigm by providing fruitful implications about cognitive configurations of decision-makers in SMEs concerning OI adoption.
•This study shows the decision-making processes leading to the willingness or reluctance to adopt Open Innovation in SMEs.•Managerial cognitive configurations play an active role when appraising Open Innovation adoption.•We present different managerial decisional paths associated with willingness or reluctance to adopt Open Innovation in SMEs.
•Frugal innovation is about achieving more value while using fewer resources.•This review systematizes the frugal innovation intellectual domain and offers a holistic picture, combining expert ...viewpoints with an overview of existing literature.•This review outlines the key areas for future research, such as new product development, ease of use, and sustainability, among others.•This study outlines the relevance of frugal innovations in combating the COVID-19 pandemic.
Frugal innovation is about achieving more value while using fewer resources. This concept has found application across multiple domains, ranging from healthcare and transport to energy and manufacturing. This straddling of multidisciplinary domains fragments our academic understanding of the literature in this field.
