This study attempts to evaluate the energy and environmental efficiency of the primary sectors of the EU member state countries. The evaluation is based on a non-radial Data Envelopment Analysis ...(DEA) model which allows for non-proportional adjustments to energy inputs and undesirable outputs and thus it provides different estimations for energy and environmental efficiency scores. The 2001–2008 time period was selected for this research. One of the most important findings is that countries like Germany, Sweden, or Austria, with strong environmental protection standards, appear to be less energy and environmentally efficient, compared with countries like Denmark, Belgium, Spain, France, or Ireland. In addition, a series of eastern European countries achieve low efficiency scores, which can be characterized as expectable, due to low technology level being implemented in the primary production process. There are also two sub-periods for this research. The first one (2001–2006) covers the fully coupled with specific cultivations period for subsidy administation, and the second (2007–2008) where the new decoupled subsidy scheme was implemented. There are significant hints for considerable changes of energy and environmental efficiency after the implementation of the the new CAP, with the new member states siginificantly differ of both energy and environmental efficiency copmared with the older ones.
Providing food security while preserving natural resources and reducing the use of production factors (land, labor, and capital), is a critical challenge for EU agricultural sectors in the 21st ...century. Sustainable Development goals adoption has increased the need for eliminating Greenhouse gas emissions across all EU sectors, while production should remain stable or even increase. For this purpose, Window Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) has been selected as a benchmarking technique, in order to assess input use efficiency of agricultural sectors of EU countries for the 2005–2019 period. Moreover, three-year projections (until 2022) have been calculated in order to acquire future efficiency scores. Emphasis has been given on the selection of alternative window widths, examining their influence on calculating efficiency scores for both projected and actual dataset. From a methodological point of view, this paper aims to highlight the assumption of zero technological change within Window DEA frames and present their differences. At the same time, results indicate that Estonia (1.000), the Netherlands (0.999) and Slovenia (0.999) are the most efficient countries in terms of input use efficiency, while Finland, UK, and Hungary (0.670, 0.755 and 0.771) score the least. Countries of central Europe (Hungary, Czech Rep., Croatia, Slovakia, and Austria) should redesign their agricultural strategies, so as to achieve the nine objectives of the upcoming CAP (2021–2027).
Several digital technologies are available to facilitate the transition toward a circular supply chain infrastructure. Small-Medium Enterprises (SMEs) should assess their readiness and measure their ...performance to select the most appropriate digital technology. This study explores how well-established digital technologies such as Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), the Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud Manufacturing (CM), and Big Data Analytics (BDA) impact circular supply chain infrastructure in SMEs. Questionnaires have been distributed to collect employees’ preferences concerning the circular supply chain management criteria (profit, innovation, sustainability, and optimization). The responses have been organized into three clusters using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). A fuzzy Technique for Order Performance by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) technique is adopted to evaluate these technologies since it constitutes a reliable managerial tool when vagueness impacts the smooth operation of the supply chain. Results indicate the ranking order of the investigated digital technologies (CPS>IoT>CM>BDA) as well as the circular benefits and the supply chain attributes imparted upon implementing these technologies. Such benefits and attributes are provided to assess the impact of these digital technologies on a circular economy. Lastly, the perspective of the selection process affected by other factors, such as the enterprise’s extroversion level and its internal structure, are discussed.
Glasshouse farming is one of the most intensive types of production of agricultural products. Via this process, consumers have the ability to consume mainly off-season vegetables and farmers are able ...to reduce operational risks, due to their ability to control micro-climate conditions. This type of farming is quite competitive worldwide, this being the main reason for formulating and implementing assessment models measuring operational performance. The methodology used in this study is Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), which has wide acceptance in agriculture, among other sectors of the economy. The production protocols of four different vegetables—cucumber, eggplant, pepper, and tomato—were evaluated. Acreage (m2), crop protection costs (€), fertilizers (€), labor (Hr/year), energy (€), and other costs (€) were used as inputs. The turnover of every production unit (€) was used as the output. Ninety-eight agricultural holdings participated in this survey. The dataset was obtained by face-to-face interviews. The main findings verify the existence of significant relative deficiencies (including a mean efficiency score of 0.87) as regards inputs usage, as well as considerably different efficiency scores among the different cultivations. The most efficient of these was the eggplant production protocol and the least efficient was that used for the tomato. The implementation of DEA verified its utility, providing incentives for continuing to use this methodology for improving land management decision making.
Agriculture is the main and, in some cases, the only, source of income and employment in rural areas. The change in the conditions under which agriculture is practiced has various effects on the ...agricultural economy but also on the social structure of rural areas. Climate change has multiple effects on agricultural production, necessitating the reorganization of agricultural production in some cases. These effects of climate change will also impact the economic and social aspects of farms in rural areas. This paper attempts to identify these effects by measuring the socioeconomic impacts of climate change in the region of Central Macedonia in Greece. For this reason, a multicriteria model was developed to simulate these impacts by estimating a set of seven social and economic indicators. The model was implemented to the average farm which was estimated from the main cultivations of the region. A scenario analysis was also used in combination with the multicriteria model. The multicriteria model suggests modifications are needed in the average farm crop plan of the region as a result of the climate change impact. The scenarios results show that climate change will negatively affect all the social and economic indicators and will continue to affect them over the years. These results can be used by policymakers to understand the economic and social impacts of climate change in the region to plan their future policies.
In this research, the attitude of European young adults (age 18 to 30 years) regarding their consumption of local and traditional products was examined. The survey was conducted on a sample of 836 ...consumers from seven European countries (Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovenia, Croatia, Denmark and France). Data collection was made by distributing a developed questionnaire through social media and university mail services. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to identify consumer perception comparing the overall sample with two subsets (consumers from Eastern and Western European countries). Six major factors were revealed: consumer behavior, uncertainty about health issues, cost, influence of media and friends and availability in store. Young adults had a positive attitude to local and traditional food products, but they expressed insecurity about health issues. Cost factor had less of an influence on interviewees from Eastern European countries than those from the overall sample (3rd and 5th factor accordingly). Influence of close environment was a different factor in Eastern countries compared to Western ones, for which it was common to see an influence from media. Females and older people (25-30 years old) have fewer doubts about Traditional Food Products, while media have a high influence on consumers' decisions. The aim of this survey was to identify the consumer profiles of young adults and create different promotion strategies of local and traditional products among the two groups of countries.
We evaluated the knockdown effect caused by four insecticides: alpha-cypermethrin, chlorfenapyr, pirimiphos-methyl and fipronil against Tribolium confusum and Oryzaephilus surinamensis adults. ...Furthermore, for the same species and insecticides, we developed a âlethality indexâ, to assess knockdown patterns. For this purpose, bioassays were conducted on concrete and metal surfaces. Adults of the tested species were exposed on both surfaces treated with the above insecticides at two doses (low and high). Knockdown assessment was done after 15, 30 and 60 min of adult exposure on the treated surfaces. Also, after 1, 3, 5, 7 and 14 d of exposure, a lethality index was calculated with an equation resulting in values from 0 to 100, where 100 indicated complete mortality and 0 complete survival. For the lethality index calculation, each adult exposed on the surface was ranked from 0 to 4, based on a scale as follows; 0: adults moved normally, 1: adults were knocked down, but were able to walk for short intervals, 2: adults were knocked down and unable to walk, but with visible movement of antennae etc., 3: adults were knocked down, with very minimal movement of the tarsi and the antennae and 4: adults were dead (no movement). Knockdown of adults immediately after exposure (15-60 min) was higher for pirimiphos-methyl followed by alpha-cypermethrin, for both dose rates tested and species, but only on the metal surface. The lethality index was high and near 100 for all insecticides after 5d of exposure for O. surinamensis, while for T. confusum adults the lethality index was consistently low for alpha-cypermethrin, suggesting that that recovery occurred. Among the insecticides examined here, chlorfenapyr was the only one that was more effective on concrete than on metal, while the reverse was noted for the other three insecticides.

The production of olives and olive oil in the Mediterranean region is one of the most important cultivations. The continuous changes imposed by the European Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) towards ...strengthening the influence of market forces have increased the necessity for the assessment of the efficiency of production protocols or patterns being implemented by the farmers. As regards olive trees cultivation, the efficiency of inputs utilization has not been studied in depth, despite the fact that this is a critical issue for both farmers and consumers. This study evaluates the efficiency rates of 100 Greek agricultural holdings specialized on olive trees cultivation by implementing a Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) input oriented model. The inputs being used are land, fertilizers, agrochemicals, labour, and energy. The output being used is the revenue of each holding. The results quantify the significant variations of efficiency scores, providing evidence that there is space for restructuring the production process, in order to improve efficiency and thus decrease the production cost of inefficient farmers.
The kiwi is a highly insect-pollinated dependent crop and is the cornerstone of the Greek agricultural sector, rendering the country as the fourth biggest kiwi producer worldwide, with an expected ...increase in national production the following years. This extensive transformation of the Greek arable land to Kiwi monocultures in combination with a worldwide shortage of pollination services due to the wild pollinators' decline raises questions for the provision of pollination services, and consequently, for the sustainability of the sector. In many countries, this shortage of pollination services has been addressed by the installation of pollination services markets, such as those in the USA and France. Therefore, this study tries to identify the barriers towards the implementation of a pollination services market in Greek kiwi production systems by conducting two separate quantitative surveys, one for beekeepers and one for kiwi producers. The findings showed a strong basis for further collaboration between the two stakeholders, as both of them acknowledge the importance of pollination services. Moreover, the farmers' willingness to pay and the beekeepers' willingness to receive of the beekeepers regarding the renting of their hives for pollination services were examined.
