We report the discovery of optical emission from the nonradiative shocked ejecta of three young type Ia supernova remnants (SNRs): SNR 0519-69.0, SNR 0509-67.5, and N103B. Deep integral field ...spectroscopic observations reveal broad and spatially resolved Fe XIV 5303 Å emission. The width of the broad line reveals, for the first time, the reverse shock speeds. For two of the remnants we can constrain the underlying supernova explosions with evolutionary models. SNR 0519-69.0 is well explained by a standard near-Chandrasekhar mass explosion, whereas for SNR 0509-67.5 our analysis suggests an energetic sub-Chandrasekhar mass explosion. With S XII, Fe IX, and Fe XV also detected, we can uniquely visualize different layers of the explosion. We refer to this new analysis technique as "supernova remnant tomography".
The Mann–Kendall test associated with the Sen's slope is a very widely used non-parametric method for trend analysis. It requires serially uncorrelated
time series, yet most of the atmospheric ...processes exhibit positive
autocorrelation. Several prewhitening methods have therefore been designed
to overcome the presence of lag-1 autocorrelation. These include a
prewhitening, a detrending and/or a correction of the detrended slope and
the original variance of the time series. The choice of which prewhitening
method and temporal segmentation to apply has consequences for the
statistical significance, the value of the slope and of the confidence limits. Here, the effects of various prewhitening methods are analyzed for
seven time series comprising in situ aerosol measurements (scattering coefficient, absorption coefficient, number concentration and aerosol
optical depth), Raman lidar water vapor mixing ratio,
as well as tropopause and zero-degree temperature levels measured by radio-sounding. These time series are characterized by a broad variety of distributions, ranges and lag-1
autocorrelation values and vary in length between 10 and 60 years. A common
way to work around the autocorrelation problem is to decrease it by
averaging the data over longer time intervals than in the original time
series. Thus, the second focus of this study evaluates the effect of time
granularity on long-term trend analysis. Finally, a new algorithm involving
three prewhitening methods is proposed in order to maximize the power of the test, to minimize the number of erroneous detected trends in the absence of a real trend and to ensure the best slope estimate for the considered length of the time series.
Context. The distribution of elements in galaxies forms an important diagnostic tool to characterize these systems’ formation and evolution. This tool is, however, complex to use in practice, as ...galaxies are subject to a range of simultaneous physical processes active from pc to kpc scales. This renders observations of the full optical extent of galaxies down to sub-kpc scales essential. Aims. Using the WiFeS integral field spectrograph, we previously detected abrupt and localized variations in the gas-phase oxygen abundance of the spiral galaxy HCG 91c. Here, we follow-up on these observations to map HCG 91c’s disk out to ~2 Re at a resolution of 600 pc, and characterize the non-radial variations of the gas-phase oxygen abundance in the system. Methods. We obtained deep MUSE observations of the target under ~0.6 arcsec seeing conditions. We perform both a spaxel-based and aperture-based analysis of the data to map the spatial variations of 12 +log (O/H) across the disk of the galaxy. Results. We confirm the presence of rapid variations of the oxygen abundance across the entire extent of the galaxy previously detected with WiFeS, for all azimuths and radii. The variations can be separated in two categories: a) localized and associated with individual H ii regions; and b) extended over kpc scales, and occurring at the boundaries of the spiral structures in the galaxy. Conclusions. Our MUSE observations suggest that the enrichment of the interstellar medium in HGC 91c has proceeded preferentially along spiral structures, and less efficiently across them. Our dataset highlights the importance of distinguishing individual star-forming regions down to scales of a few 100 pc when using integral field spectrographs to spatially resolve the distribution of oxygen abundances in a given system, and accurately characterize azimuthal variations and intrinsic scatter.
ABSTRACT
We present the ionized gas outflow morphology in the Circinus galaxy using the narrow-field mode (NFM) of the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) instrument onboard the Very Large ...Telescope (VLT). The NFM observations provide a spatial resolution of ∼0.1 arcsec, corresponding to a physical scale of ∼2 pc, one of the highest spatial resolution achievable using ground-based adaptive optics-assisted observations in the optical wavelengths. The MUSE observations reveal a collimated clumpy outflow profile originating near the active galactic nucleus (AGN) location and extending up to 1.5 arcsec (∼30 pc) in the north-west direction. The collimated structure then fragments into two filaments, giving the entire outflowing gas a ‘tuning-fork’ morphology. These structures remain undetected in the lower spatial resolution MUSE wide-field mode data. We explain the origin of this tuning-fork structure to the interaction of the outflow with a dense clump in the interstellar medium (ISM) as the outflow propagates outwards. The origin of the collimated structure itself could be from jet–ISM interactions on small scales. These observations also provide evidence to the origin of the ionized gas filaments previously observed in the Circinus galaxy out to kiloparsec scales. We find instantaneous and time-averaged mass outflow rates of 10−2 and 10−4 M⊙ yr−1, respectively. Based on the star formation rate in the Circinus galaxy reported in the literature, the observed ionized outflows are not expected to regulate star formation within the ∼100 pc scales probed by the NFM data.
ABSTRACT
We present new and archival Australia Telescope Compact Array and Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array data of the Small Magellanic Cloud supernova remnant 1E 0102.2–7219 at 2100, ...5500, 9000, and 108 000 MHz; as well as H i data provided by the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder. The remnant shows a ring-like morphology with a mean radius of 6.2 pc. The 5500 MHz image reveals a bridge-like structure, seen for the first time in a radio image. This structure is also visible in both optical and X-ray images. In the 9000 MHz image, we detect a central feature that has a flux density of 4.3 mJy but rule out a pulsar wind nebula origin, due to the lack of significant polarization towards the central feature with an upper limit of 4 per cent. The mean fractional polarization for 1E 0102.2–7219 is 7 ± 1 and 12 ± 2 per cent for 5500 and 9000 MHz, respectively. The spectral index for the entire remnant is −0.61 ± 0.01. We estimate the line-of-sight magnetic field strength in the direction of 1E 0102.2–7219 of ∼44 µG with an equipartition field of $65\pm 5\, \mu$G. This latter model uses the minimum energy of the sum of the magnetic field and cosmic ray electrons only. We detect an H i cloud towards this remnant at the velocity range of ∼160–180 km s−1 and a cavity-like structure at the velocity of 163.7–167.6 km s−1. We do not detect CO emission towards 1E 0102.2–7219.
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia. However, the etiopathogenesis of this devastating disease is not fully understood. Recent studies in rodents suggest that alterations in ...the gut microbiome may contribute to amyloid deposition, yet the microbial communities associated with AD have not been characterized in humans. Towards this end, we characterized the bacterial taxonomic composition of fecal samples from participants with and without a diagnosis of dementia due to AD. Our analyses revealed that the gut microbiome of AD participants has decreased microbial diversity and is compositionally distinct from control age- and sex-matched individuals. We identified phylum- through genus-wide differences in bacterial abundance including decreased Firmicutes, increased Bacteroidetes, and decreased Bifidobacterium in the microbiome of AD participants. Furthermore, we observed correlations between levels of differentially abundant genera and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers of AD. These findings add AD to the growing list of diseases associated with gut microbial alterations, as well as suggest that gut bacterial communities may be a target for therapeutic intervention.
Spacecraft observations have established that all known planets with an internal magnetic field, as part of their interaction with the solar wind, possess well-developed magnetic tails, stretching ...vast distances on the nightside of the planets. In this review paper we focus on the magnetotails of Mercury, Earth, Jupiter and Saturn, four planets which possess well-developed tails and which have been visited by several spacecraft over the years. The fundamental physical processes of reconnection, convection, and charged particle acceleration are common to the magnetic tails of Mercury, Earth, Jupiter and Saturn. The great differences in solar wind conditions, planetary rotation rates, internal plasma sources, ionospheric properties, and physical dimensions from Mercury’s small magnetosphere to the giant magnetospheres of Jupiter and Saturn provide an outstanding opportunity to extend our understanding of the influence of such factors on basic processes. In this review article, we study the four planetary environments of Mercury, Earth, Jupiter and Saturn, comparing their common features and contrasting their unique dynamics.
Embryonic development is dictated by tight regulation of DNA replication, cell division and differentiation. Mutations in DNA repair and replication genes disrupt this equilibrium, giving rise to ...neurodevelopmental disease characterized by microcephaly, short stature and chromosomal breakage. Here, we identify biallelic variants in two components of the RAD18-SLF1/2-SMC5/6 genome stability pathway, SLF2 and SMC5, in 11 patients with microcephaly, short stature, cardiac abnormalities and anemia. Patient-derived cells exhibit a unique chromosomal instability phenotype consisting of segmented and dicentric chromosomes with mosaic variegated hyperploidy. To signify the importance of these segmented chromosomes, we have named this disorder Atelís (meaning - incomplete) Syndrome. Analysis of Atelís Syndrome cells reveals elevated levels of replication stress, partly due to a reduced ability to replicate through G-quadruplex DNA structures, and also loss of sister chromatid cohesion. Together, these data strengthen the functional link between SLF2 and the SMC5/6 complex, highlighting a distinct role for this pathway in maintaining genome stability.
