The paper is not only an attempt at reconstructing the literary legend of Mikołaj Potocki, a governor from Kaniów, but also a story about the helplessness of the Polish 19th‑century writers against ...the crazy magnate, his legend and Sarmatism, which he represented. Works by Kraszewski, Groza, Grabowski, Jankowski and many other authors, which are dedicated to Mikołaj Potocki, seem to be an interesting testimony of the 19th‑century writers’ struggle with the tradition of their ancestors (not always obvious and accepted). They also make it possible to formulate a thesis about the 19th‑century retouch of pre‑Enlightenment noble culture (rejecting cruelty as a component of knightly identity of noble culture and eliminating characters evoking confusion from among the pantheon of ancestors, for example those described as tricksters by anthropologists).
The article is a suggestion for a possible interpretation of an identified interference of two currents − Romantic Sarmatism and Biedermeier which marked their presence in the 19th-century Polish ...culture. The currents provide an example of cultural diffusion which results in redefinition of the cultural identity of Polish gentry of the second half of the 19th century. Based on literary works defined as the circle of heirs of Pamiątki Soplicy Soplica’s Memoirs by Henryk Rzewuski, the article portrays not only the evolution of the old-time szlachta (Polish gentry) tradition in the context of ongoing social and cultural changes brought by the 19th century but most of all it extracts the essence and meaning of Biedermeier as a crucial cultural impulse which modernised the tradition of szlachta (Polish gentry) and ushered it into the cultural processes taking place in the 19th-century Europe. This cultural diffusion which is apparent in the relationship between Romantic Sarmatism and Biedermeier makes it possible to outline the geographical borders of cultural phenomena as well as their time frames which are indistinct when looked into only from the perspective of commonly accepted mainstream history of the 19th-century Polish culture. Also, the article pays attention to the social changes which initiated shifts and movements within the Polish culture of the 19th century.
Paweł Kubicki, w ...wydanym w 1929 roku szkicu biograficznym poświęconym Tarnowskiemu, pisał o stu pięćdziesięciu pięciu nekrologach zamieszczonych w „Przeglądzie”, ale listę, przygotowaną we współpracy z Różą Tarnowską, uzupełniał jeszcze o dziesięć kolejnych szkiców wspomnieniowych wydanych osobno
Węgrzyn proposes a new reading of Henryk Rzewuski’s Pamiątek Soplicy The Memoirs of Soplica, 1839 as a recording of a melancholy becoming-aware of the decline of traditional noble culture in the ...nineteenth century. While Rzewuski’s contemporaries read his gawęda as a ritualised commemoration and attempt to reintegrate the community, his work lost its readability for later generations and became no more than a “picturesque”
tale about a Sarmatian past. Questions of the performativity of the gawęda, its genre relationships and its oral roots all have a common denominator – melancholy. This allows Węgrzyn to shed light on the paradoxes linked with the character of Rzewuski-Soplica
and to capture the ambivalent status of the Romantic gawęda which tries to recreate the identity of the oral noble gawęda in writing.
