This study aimed to capture and explore family caregivers' lived experience of caring for hospitalised patients with cancer during the lockdown.
The unprecedented lockdown episodes due to COVID-19 ...have brought significant changes in the hospital visiting policies and caregiving practices. As part of the precautionary measures for hospital visits, the bedside companion was restricted to one caregiver for patients with cancer in Shanghai hospitals.
This study adopted a descriptive phenomenological approach.
Data were collected among 20 family caregivers recruited from the Oncology department of a tertiary hospital in Shanghai in May 2022, using purposive sampling method and followed by unstructured, open-ended interviews. Colaizzi's seven-step data analysis method was used to analyse the data to reveal the emergent themes and subthemes of the phenomenon.
Four themes were generated on family caregivers' lived experience of caring for hospitalised patients with cancer during the lockdown, including (1) Feeling scared for the patient; (2) Living a life feeling trapped under COVID-19 surveillance; (3) Feeling neglected and unseen; (4) Growing resilience and appreciation.
The lockdown exacerbated the burden of family caregivers when they cared for the hospitalised patients with cancer during the lockdown period. However, positive reframing of the lived experience facilitated their coping with the challenging situation.
Findings from this study highlighted the potential proactive roles the healthcare providers could play in improving family caregivers' health and supporting them during and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hope plays an extremely important role in protecting childhood cancer patients from psychological distress caused by cancer. The availability of a valid and reliable instrument that can accurately ...assess hope is crucial for the development of interventions to enhance hope among childhood cancer patients. This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Herth Hope Index (HHI). Chinese childhood cancer patients aged 8-17 years (n = 412) were invited to participate in this cross-sectional study. Participants completed the Chinese translated version of the HHI, the Center for Epidemiology Studies Depression Scale for Children and the Paediatric Quality of Life Inventory 3.0 Cancer Module. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were conducted to assess the structural validity of the HHI. Content validity, convergent validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability at 2 weeks were also examined. The content validity index for items ranged from 0.8 to 1.0, and that for the scale was 0.9, demonstrating appropriate content validity. There was a positive correlation between HHI and Center for Epidemiology Studies Depression Scale for Children scores and a negative correlation between HHI and Paediatric Quality of Life Inventory 3.0 Cancer Module scores. The results indicated that the Chinese version of the HHI showed reasonable convergent validity and discriminant validity. Exploratory factor analysis yielded a three-factor model, which could explain 82.74% of the total variance. The confirmatory factor analysis results showed that χ
/df was 2.20, comparative fit index was 0.98, goodness of fit index was 0.94, and root-mean-square error of approximation was 0.07. Cronbach's alpha was 0.78, indicating good internal consistency. The findings of the study showed that the Chinese version of the HHI (11-item) is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing hope among Chinese childhood cancer patients. Evidence-based interventions can be provided to enhance hope in this population.

Existing infection control studies in hospitals focused on rooms with special ventilation requirements. Study on proper management practices and ventilation strategies in general inpatient wards are critical but currently lacking. To identify the simple operational practices that can limit airborne transmission within a general inpatient ward with the patient cubicle, nursing station and corridor, this study investigates the effects of infected patient locations, air change rates (ACH) and door opening angles on bioaerosol dispersion using a novel tracer gas sensor network. Experimental results show that the supply inlet and infected patient locations significantly affects the distribution and dispersion of the tracer gas within the ward. Using a higher ventilation rate to achieve a lower average airborne pathogen concentration can cause more mixing of air and a wider dispersion of airborne pathogens. Localization of bioaerosols near the source through ventilation controls, a low ACH and proper patient location near the exhaust can minimize the air turbulence and the spread and reduce the infection risks of the susceptibles. Using physical partitions or objects as shields against airborne contaminants can unpredictably influence the airflow patterns, airflow evaluations should hence be done on a case-by-case basis. The methodology established in this study puts forward an economical and fast way for evaluating airborne infection risk, and the experimental results can be useful references for building engineers and hospital facility managers to formulate proper strategies for risk assessment and infection control.
Multidrug-resistant bacteria are spreading at alarming rates, and despite extensive efforts no new class of antibiotic with activity against Gram-negative bacteria has been approved in over fifty ...years. Natural products and their derivatives have a key role in combating Gram-negative pathogens. Here we report chemical optimization of the arylomycins-a class of natural products with weak activity and limited spectrum-to obtain G0775, a molecule with potent, broad-spectrum activity against Gram-negative bacteria. G0775 inhibits the essential bacterial type I signal peptidase, a new antibiotic target, through an unprecedented molecular mechanism. It circumvents existing antibiotic resistance mechanisms and retains activity against contemporary multidrug-resistant Gram-negative clinical isolates in vitro and in several in vivo infection models. These findings demonstrate that optimized arylomycin analogues such as G0775 could translate into new therapies to address the growing threat of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative infections.

To examine the efficacy of team-based learning (TBL) in developing problem-solving ability and critical thinking skills among nursing students and to identify the strategies used and obstacles to TBL in nursing education.
Systematic review (SR) of experimental and quasi-experimental studies.
A thorough database search was done on 19 April 2022 with four electronic databases: Academic Search Premier, CINAHL Complete, ERIC, Medline/PubMed. Eligible studies from the 1990s to 2022 were selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria of this SR.
The PRISMA 2020 guideline was applied in this SR. The JBI Critical Appraisal Checklists were used to evaluate the quality of the selected studies. Four reviewers participated in the review process to ensure rigour and credibility of the study.
The six studies reviewed included one randomised control trial, one crossover study, and four quasi-experimental studies. Two studies assessed the effectiveness of TBL in developing critical thinking skills and had shown in favour of TBL with statistically significant differences. Five studies evaluated the effectiveness of TBL in enhancing problem-solving ability. Three of five studies showed favour in TBL groups. The teaching strategies and obstacles in TBL use in nursing education were identified.
TBL may be considered a potential active-learner-centred approach to develop critical and problem-solving skills in nursing education. Further research is needed to identify the optimal duration of implementing TBL to develop nursing students' critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities.

This article argues that it was the realpolitik of Pope Francis, the first Jesuit Pope, that led the Vatican to make 'a leap of faith' and diverge from the two previous papacies. The most significant achievement of the agreement was arguably the establishment of a 'China model' in appointing bishops. However, this development has also stirred up confusion and sidestepped crucial issues such as the status of the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association.

Studies on Hong Kong’s contentious politics have focused primarily on the high tides of mobilization. Scant attention is paid to what became of the intense mobilizations following their decline. This ...article spotlights the “abeyance” politics of community activism, in which activists sought to make territorial communities an arena of social and political participation in quieter times after mass mobilizations. Drawing on the concept of abeyance from political sociology, we argue that community activism served as “abeyance structures” after the mass mobilizations in the early 2010s, a major protest cycle preceding the 2019 anti-extradition movement. Based on mixed methods and original data, we argue that these abeyance structures not only allowed activists to maintain their political engagement but also gave rise to various practices of “lived citizenship” in territorial communities. These practices produced a changing sense of political subjectivity among citizens, establishing a more grounded notion of democracy that emphasizes their participation in local affairs and social entitlements. Our findings aim to enrich the literature on movement abeyance and provide a nuanced understanding of political activism in Hong Kong beyond street politics.

Heterobifunctional compounds that direct the ubiquitination of intracellular proteins in a targeted manner via co-opted ubiquitin ligases have enormous potential to transform the field of medicinal ...chemistry. These chimeric molecules, often termed proteolysis-targeting chimeras (PROTACs) in the chemical literature, enable the controlled degradation of specific proteins via their direction to the cellular proteasome. In this report, we describe the second phase of our research focused on exploring antibody–drug conjugates (ADCs), which incorporate BRD4-targeting chimeric degrader entities. We employ a new BRD4-binding fragment in the construction of the chimeric ADC payloads that is significantly more potent than the corresponding entity utilized in our initial studies. The resulting BRD4-degrader antibody conjugates exhibit potent and antigen-dependent BRD4 degradation and antiproliferation activities in cell-based experiments. Multiple ADCs bearing chimeric BRD4-degrader payloads also exhibit strong, antigen-dependent antitumor efficacy in mouse xenograft assessments that employ several different tumor models.
The biological and medicinal impacts of proteolysis-targeting chimeras (PROTACs) and related chimeric molecules that effect intracellular degradation of target proteins via ubiquitin ligase-mediated ...ubiquitination continue to grow. However, these chimeric entities are relatively large compounds that often possess molecular characteristics, which may compromise oral bioavailability, solubility, and/or in vivo pharmacokinetic properties. We therefore explored the conjugation of such molecules to monoclonal antibodies using technologies originally developed for cytotoxic payloads so as to provide alternate delivery options for these novel agents. In this report, we describe the first phase of our systematic development of antibody–drug conjugates (ADCs) derived from bromodomain-containing protein 4 (BRD4)-targeting chimeric degrader entities. We demonstrate the antigen-dependent delivery of the degrader payloads to PC3-S1 prostate cancer cells along with related impacts on MYC transcription and intracellular BRD4 levels. These experiments culminate with the identification of one degrader conjugate, which exhibits antigen-dependent antiproliferation effects in LNCaP prostate cancer cells.
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major global public health problem that can cause complications such as diabetic retinopathy, diabetic neuropathy, and diabetic nephropathy. Besides the reporting of ...reduction in corneal nerve density and decrease in corneal sensitivity in diabetic patients, there may be a subsequent result in delayed corneal wound healing and increased corneal infections. Despite being a potential cause of blindness, these corneal nerve changes have not gained enough attention. It has been proposed that corneal nerve changes may be an indicator for diabetic neuropathy, which can provide a window for early diagnosis and treatment. In this review, the authors aimed to give an overview of the relationship between corneal nerves and diabetic neuropathy as well as the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of corneal nerve fiber changes caused by DM for improved prediction and prevention of diabetic neuropathy. In addition, the authors summarized current and novel therapeutic methods for delayed corneal wound healing, nerve protection and regeneration in the diabetic cornea.
