Ocular pyogenic granuloma is a benign tumor seen after ocular insult secondary to ocular surgeries, trauma or infection. Although benign, intervention is sometimes necessary. Previous authors have ...reported pyogenic granuloma formation following oculoplastic surgeries. We report a pyogenic granuloma after an Ahmed glaucoma valve implantation. A 65-year-old gentleman presented with right eye redness associated with pain and swelling ~2 months after Ahmed glaucoma valve implantation. Examination found a sessile growth on the tube extruding puss with signs of endophthalmitis. The glaucoma drainage device was explanted and culture results grew Staphylococcus aureus. This article discusses the formation of pyogenic granuloma on a glaucoma drainage device and its management.
The demand for electrochemical energy storage devices has spawned a demand for high-performance advanced batteries. From a meaningful performance and cost perspective, zinc-based rechargeable ...batteries (ZBRBs) have become the most promising secondary batteries. Zinc can be directly used as a stable anode in aqueous energy storage, providing shuttle cations in the electrolyte, which is beneficial for future industrialization. This review looks back at the development of electrolyte systems for ZBRBs in recent years, ranging from traditional alkaline electrolytes to mild environment, and finally to a new generation of acidic environmental battery system. This article reviews the energy storage mechanisms of various electrode materials in different electrolytes of ZBRBs and focuses on the influence of electrolyte components on their performance. Electrolytes can be classified into aqueous (alkaline, neutral, and acid), organic, and gel electrolytes. Through comparative analysis, the mechanism and methods for the design and optimization of electrolyte performance are emphasized. Based on the premise of not sacrificing the existing advantages of safety and high capacity, several research directions that may overcome these challenges in the future are proposed.

Abstract A systematic review was performed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of topical 0.05% cyclosporine in treating patients with dry eye syndrome (DES). Twelve qualified randomized-controlled ...trials incorporating 1367 patients were analyzed. In comparison to controls, patients who were on topical 0.05% cyclosporine eye drops had lower Ocular Surface Disease Index scores (mean difference MD=4.10, 95% CI: 0.25-7.96, P=.04), longer tear film breakup time (MD=2.30 seconds, 95% CI: 0.75-3.86, P=.004), improved Schirmer I scores (MD=2.77 mm/5min, 95% CI: 1.63-3.91, P=.00001), reduced corneal fluorescein staining (standardized mean difference SMD=0.61, 95% CI: 0.07-1.15, P=.03), and higher goblet cell densities (SMD=1.68, 95% CI: 0.54-2.81, P=.004). However, there were more adverse effects in the cyclosporine patient group (odds ratio=1.64, 95% CI: 1.17-2.30, P=.004). Topical 0.05% cyclosporine eye drops twice daily significantly improved both the objective and subjective outcomes in DES patients. The study limitations in the clinical, methodological and statistical heterogeneities are discussed.
Oral lubrication mediated by mucin and protein containing salivary conditioning films (SCFs) with strong water retainability can get impaired due to disease such as xerostomia, that is, a subjective ...dry mouth feel associated with the changed salivary composition and low salivary flow rate. Aberrant SCFs in xerostomia patient cause difficulties in speech, mastication, and dental erosion while the prescribed artificial saliva is inadequate to solve the complications on a lasting basis. With the growing aging population, it is urgently needed to propose a new strategy to restore oral lubrication. Existing saliva substitutes often overwhelm the aberrant SCFs, generating inadequate relief. Here we demonstrated that the function of aberrant SCFs in a patient with Sjögren syndrome can be boosted through mucin recruitment by a simple mucoadhesive, chitosan-catechol (Chi-C). Chi-C with different conjugation degrees (Chi-C7.6%, Chi-C14.5%, Chi-C22.4%) was obtained by carbodiimide chemistry, which induced a layered structure composed of a rigid bottom and a soft secondary SCF (S-SCF) after reflow of saliva. The higher conjugation degree of Chi-C generates a higher glycosylated S-SCF by mucin recruitment and a lower friction in vitro. The layered S-SCF extends the “relief period” for Sjögren patient saliva over 7-fold, measured on an ex vivo tongue-enamel friction system. Besides lubrication, Chi-C-treated S-SCF reduces dental erosion depths from 125 to 70 μm. Chi-C shows antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus mutans. This research provides a new key insight in restoring the functionality of conditioning film at articulating tissues in living systems.
Radiochromic film (RCF) is a valuable dosimetric tool, primarily due to its sub-millimeter spatial resolution. For accurate proton dosimetry, the dependence of film response on linear energy transfer ...(LET) must be characterized and calibrated. In this work, we characterized film under-response, or 'quenching', as a function of dose-weighted linear energy transfer (LETd) in several proton fields and established a simple, linear relationship with LETd. We performed measurements as a function of depth in a PMMA phantom irradiated by a spot-scanning proton beam. The fields had energies of 71.3 MeV, 71.3 MeV with filter, and 159.9 MeV. At each depth (measurements taken in depth step sizes of 0.5-1 mm in the Bragg peak), we measured dose with a PTW Markus ion chamber and EBT3 RCF. EBT3 under-response was characterized by the ratio of dose measured with film to that with ion chamber. LETd values for our experimental setup were calculated using in-house clinical Monte Carlo code. Measured film under-response increased with LETd, from approximately 10% under-response for LETd = 5 keV µm−1 to approximately 20% for LETd = 8 keV µm−1. The under-response for all measurements was plotted versus LETd. A linear fit to the data was performed, yielding a function for under-response, , with respect to LETd: . Finally, the linear under-response relationship was applied to a film measurement within a spread-out Bragg peak (SOBP). Without correcting for LETd-dependence in the SOBP measurement, the discrepancy between film and Monte Carlo profiles was greater than 15% at the distal edge. With correction, the corrected film profile was within 2% and 1 mm of the Monte Carlo profile. RCF response depends on LETd, potentially under-responding by >15% in clinically-relevant scenarios. Therefore, it is insufficient to perform only a dose calibration; LET calibration is also necessary for accurate proton film dosimetry. The LETd-dependence of EBT3 can be described by a single, linear function over a range of clinically-relevant proton therapy LETd values.
Autoimmune diseases and chronic inflammatory disorders are characterized by dysregulated immune responses resulting in excessive and uncontrolled tissue inflammation. Multiple factors including ...genetic variation, environmental stimuli, and infection are all thought to contribute to continued inflammation and pathology. Current evidence supports the microbiota as one such factor with emerging data linking commensal organisms to the onset and progression of disease. In this review, we will discuss links between the microbiota and specific diseases as well as highlight common pathways that link intestinal microbes with multiple autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.
The purpose of this work was to develop an end-to-end patient-specific quality assurance (QA) technique for spot-scanned proton therapy that is more sensitive and efficient than traditional ...approaches. The patient-specific methodology relies on independently verifying the accuracy of the delivered proton fluence and the dose calculation in the heterogeneous patient volume. A Monte Carlo dose calculation engine, which was developed in-house, recalculates a planned dose distribution on the patient CT data set to verify the dose distribution represented by the treatment planning system. The plan is then delivered in a pre-treatment setting and logs of spot position and dose monitors, which are integrated into the treatment nozzle, are recorded. A computational routine compares the delivery log to the DICOM spot map used by the Monte Carlo calculation to ensure that the delivered parameters at the machine match the calculated plan. Measurements of dose planes using independent detector arrays, which historically are the standard approach to patient-specific QA, are not performed for every patient. The nozzle-integrated detectors are rigorously validated using independent detectors in regular QA intervals. The measured data are compared to the expected delivery patterns. The dose monitor reading deviations are reported in a histogram, while the spot position discrepancies are plotted vs. spot number to facilitate independent analysis of both random and systematic deviations. Action thresholds are linked to accuracy of the commissioned delivery system. Even when plan delivery is acceptable, the Monte Carlo second check system has identified dose calculation issues which would not have been illuminated using traditional, phantom-based measurement techniques. The efficiency and sensitivity of our patient-specific QA program has been improved by implementing a procedure which independently verifies patient dose calculation accuracy and plan delivery fidelity. Such an approach to QA requires holistic integration and maintenance of patient-specific and patient-independent QA.

The Novel Defense Hypothesis predicts that introduced plants may possess novel allelochemicals which act as a defense against native generalist enemies. Here, we aim to test if the chemicals involved ...in allelopathy in the invasive plant Wedelia trilobata can contribute to higher resistance against generalist herbivore and pathogen enemies by comparing with its native congener W. chinensis in controlled laboratory conditions. The allelopathic effects of the leaf extract from W. trilobata on the generalist enemies were also assessed. We showed that the larvae of two moth species preferred W. chinensis over w. trilobata. The growth rate of larvae feeding on W. trilobata leaves was significantly lower than those feeding on W. chinensis leaves. When detached leaves were inoculated with phytopathogens, the infected leaf area of W. trilobata was significantly smaller than that of W. chinensis. In addition, the leaf extract of W. trilobata also effectively inhibited the growth of the larvae and the mycelial growth of the phytopathogens. Our results indicate that the defenses of invasive W. trilobata against generalist herbivore and pathogen enemies are stronger than that of its native congener, which may be attributed to the allelopathic effects. This study provides novel insights that can comprehensively link the Novel Defense, Behavioral Constraint and Enemy Release hypotheses. These combined hypotheses would explain how invasive plants escape from their natural specialist enemies, where their allelopathic chemicals may deter herbivorous insects and inhibit pathogen infection.

Understanding the mechanisms underlying species divergence remains a central goal in evolutionary biology. Landscape genetics can be a powerful tool for examining evolutionary processes. We used ...genome-wide scans to genotype samples from populations of eight Angophora species. Angophora is a small genus within the eucalypts comprising common and rare species in a heterogeneous landscape, making it an appropriate group to study speciation. We found A. hispida was highly differentiated from the other species. Two subspecies of A. costata (subsp. costata and subsp. euryphylla) formed a group, while the third (subsp. leiocarpa, which is only distinguished by its smooth fruits and provenance) was supported as a distinct pseudocryptic species. Other species that are morphologically distinct could not be genetically differentiated (e. g., A. floribunda and A. subvelutina). Distribution and genetic differentiation within Angophora were strongly influenced by temperature and humidity, as well as biogeographic barriers, particularly rivers and higher elevation regions. While extensive introgression was found between many populations of some species (e. g., A. bakeri and A. floribunda), others only hybridized at certain locations. Overall, our findings suggest multiple mechanisms drove evolutionary diversification in Angophora and highlight how genome-wide analyses of related species in a diverse landscape can provide insights into speciation.
