Sudan I is a carcinogenic compound containing an azo group that has been illegally utilized as an adulterant in food products to impart a bright red color to foods. In this paper, we develop a facile ...lab-on-a-chip device for instant, ultra-sensitive detection of Sudan I from real food samples using plasmonics-enhanced diatomaceous thin film, which can simultaneously perform on-chip separation using thin layer chromatography (TLC) and highly specific sensing using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy. Diatomite is a kind of nature-created photonic crystal biosilica with periodic pores and was used both as the stationary phase of the TLC plate and photonic crystals to enhance the SERS sensitivity. The on-chip chromatography capability of the TLC plate was verified by isolating Sudan I in a mixture solution containing Rhodamine 6G, while SERS sensing was achieved by spraying gold colloidal nanoparticles into the sensing spot. Such plasmonics-enhanced diatomaceous film can effectively detect Sudan I with more than 10 times improvement of the Raman signal intensity than commercial silica gel TLC plates. We applied this lab-on-a-chip device for real food samples and successfully detected Sudan I in chili sauce and chili oil down to 1 ppm, or 0.5 ng/spot. This on-chip TLC-SERS biosensor based on diatomite biosilica can function as a cost-effective, ultra-sensitive, and reliable technology for screening Sudan I and many other illicit ingredients to enhance food safety.

Frequent monitoring of sea food, especially shellfish samples, for the presence of biotoxins serves not only as a valuable strategy to mitigate adulteration associated health risks, but could also be ...used to develop predictive models to understand algal explosion and toxin trends. Periodic toxin assessment is often restricted due to poor sensitivity, multifarious cleaning/extraction protocols and high operational costs of conventional detection methods. Through this work, a simplistic approach to quantitatively assess the presence of a representative marine neurotoxin, Domoic acid (DA), from spiked water and crab meat samples is presented. DA sensing was performed based on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) using silver nanoparticle enriched diatomaceous earth—a biological photonic crystal material in nature. Distinctive optical features of the quasi-ordered pore patterns in diatom skeleton with sporadic yet uniform functionalization of silver nanoparticles act as excellent SERS substrates with improved DA signals. Different concentrations of DA were tested on the substrates with the lowest detectable concentration being 1 ppm that falls well below the regulatory DA levels in seafood (>20 ppm). All the measurements were rapid and were performed within a measurement time of 1 min. Utilizing the measurement results, a standard calibration curve between SERS signal intensity and DA concentration was developed. The calibration curve was later utilized to predict the DA concentration from spiked Dungeness crab meat samples. SERS based quantitative assessment was further complemented with principal component analysis and partial least square regression studies. The tested methodology aims to bring forth a sensitive yet simple, economical and an extraction free routine to assess biotoxin presence in sea food samples onsite.
As IoT devices become cheaper, smaller, and more ubiquitously deployed, they can reveal more information than their intended design and threaten user privacy. Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) ...sensors previously installed for energy savings and indoor health monitoring have emerged as an avenue to infer sensitive occupant information. For example, light sensors are a known conduit for inspecting room occupancy status with motion-sensitive lights. Light signals can also infer sensitive data such as occupant identity and digital screen information. To limit sensor overreach, we explore the selection of sensor placements as a methodology. Specifically, in this proof-of-concept exploration, we demonstrate the potential of physics-based simulation models to quantify the minimal number of positions necessary to capture sensitive inferences. We show how a single well-placed sensor can be sufficient in specific building contexts to holistically capture its environmental states and how additional well-placed sensors can contribute to more granular inferences. We contribute a device-agnostic and building-adaptive workflow to respectfully capture inferable occupant activity and elaborate on the implications of incorporating building simulations into sensing schemes in the real world.
The relationship between the mechanical forces associated with bowel movement and colonic mucosal physiology is understudied. This is partly due to the limited availability of physiologically ...relevant fecal models that can exert these mechanical stimuli in in vitro colon models in a simple-to-implement manner. In this report, we created a mucus-coated fecal surrogate that was magnetically propelled to produce a controllable sweeping mechanical stimulation on primary intestinal epithelial cell monolayers. The mucus layer was derived from purified porcine stomach mucins, which were first modified with reactive vinyl sulfone (VS) groups followed by reaction with a thiol crosslinker (PEG-4SH) via a Michael addition click reaction. Formation of mucus hydrogel network was achieved at the optimal mixing ratio at 2.5 % w/v mucin-VS and 0.5 % w/v PEG-4SH. The artificial mucus layer possessed similar properties as the native mucus in terms of its storage modulus (66 Pa) and barrier function (resistance to penetration by 1-μm microbeads). This soft, but mechanically resilient mucus layer was covalently linked to a stiff fecal hydrogel surrogate (based on agarose and magnetic particles, with a storage modulus of 4600 Pa). The covalent bonding between the mucus and agarose ensured its stability in the subsequent fecal sliding movement when tested at travel distances as long as 203 m. The mucus layer served as a lubricant and protected epithelial cells from the moving fecal surrogate over a 1 h time without cell damage. To demonstrate its utility, this mucus-coated fecal surrogate was used to mechanically stimulate a fully differentiated, in vitro primary colon epithelium, and the physiological stimulated response of mucin-2 (MUC2), interleukin-8 (IL-8) and serotonin (5HT) secretion was quantified. Compared with a static control, mechanical stimulation caused a significant increase in MUC2 secretion into luminal compartment (6.4 × ), a small but significant increase in IL-8 secretion (2.5 × and 3.5 × , at both luminal and basal compartments, respectively), and no detectable alteration in 5HT secretion. This mucus-coated fecal surrogate is expected to be useful in in vitro colon organ-on-chips and microphysiological systems to facilitate the investigation of feces-induced mechanical stimulation on intestinal physiology and pathology.
Compared with traditional Fabry-Perot optical filters, plasmonic color filters could greatly remedy the complexity and reduce the cost of manufacturing. In this paper we present end-to-end ...demonstration of visible light spectroscopy based on highly selective plasmonic color filter array based on resonant grating structure. The spectra of 6 assorted samples were measured using an array of 20 narrowband color filters and detected signals were used to reconstruct original spectra by using new unmixing algorithm and by solving least squares problem with smoothing regularization. The original spectra were reconstructed with less than 0.137 root mean squared error. This works shows promise towards fully integrating plasmonic color filter array in imagers used in hyperspectral cameras.
Metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) capacitor-driven silicon modulators have demonstrated exceeding performance in driving voltage, energy efficiency, and bandwidth through heterogeneous integration with ...other active materials, including III-V compound semiconductors, transparent conductive oxides (TCOs), and graphene. However, a proper quantitative comparison is lacking among various device structures due to the difference in material properties and device designs. In this article, we first briefly reviewed state-of-the-art MOS capacitor-driven silicon modulators. Following that, we modeled the modulation efficiency and optical loss of two most representative device structures by incorporating the optical properties such as plasma dispersion, band-filling, and bandgap shrinkage effects for several heterogeneously integrated materials. The comparative analysis based on simulated results shows that Ge, III-Vs, and TCOs all offer larger index modulation than Si, whereas graphene has the largest index modulation. At the end of this article, we discussed the strategy of heterogeneous integration based on device design and scalable fabrication.
In compressed sensing MRI (CS-MRI), k-space measurements are under-sampled to achieve accelerated scan times. CS-MRI presents two fundamental problems: (1) where to sample and (2) how to reconstruct ...an under-sampled scan. In this article, we tackle both problems simultaneously for the specific case of 2D Cartesian sampling, using a novel end-to-end learning framework that we call LOUPE (Learning-based Optimization of the Under-sampling PattErn). Our method trains a neural network model on a set of full-resolution MRI scans, which are retrospectively under-sampled on a 2D Cartesian grid and forwarded to an anti-aliasing (a.k.a. reconstruction) model that computes a reconstruction, which is in turn compared with the input. This formulation enables a data-driven optimized under-sampling pattern at a given sparsity level. In our experiments, we demonstrate that LOUPE-optimized under-sampling masks are data-dependent, varying significantly with the imaged anatomy, and perform well with different reconstruction methods. We present empirical results obtained with a large-scale, publicly available knee MRI dataset, where LOUPE offered superior reconstruction quality across different conditions. Even with an aggressive 8-fold acceleration rate, LOUPE's reconstructions contained much of the anatomical detail that was missed by alternative masks and reconstruction methods. Our experiments also show how LOUPE yielded optimal under-sampling patterns that were significantly different for brain vs knee MRI scans. We propose that homozygous deletions ...in such passenger genes can expose cancer-specific therapeutic vulnerabilities when the collaterally deleted gene is a member of a functionally redundant family of genes carrying out an essential function. The glycolytic gene enolase 1 (ENO1) in the 1p36 locus is deleted in glioblastoma (GBM), which is tolerated by the expression of ENO2. Here we show that short-hairpin-RNA-mediated silencing of ENO2 selectively inhibits growth, survival and the tumorigenic potential of ENO1-deleted GBM cells, and that the enolase inhibitor phosphonoacetohydroxamate is selectively toxic to ENO1-deleted GBM cells relative to ENO1-intact GBM cells or normal astrocytes. The principle of collateral vulnerability should be applicable to other passenger-deleted genes encoding functionally redundant essential activities and provide an effective treatment strategy for cancers containing such genomic events.

This article ...reports the use of diatom frustules as an integration platform to enhance localized surface plasmon resonances of self-assembled silver nanoparticles (NPs) on the surface of diatom frustules. Theoretical and experimental results show enhanced localized surface plasmons due to the coupling with the guided-mode resonances of the frustules. We observed 2 × stronger optical extinction and over 4 × higher sensitivity of surface-enhanced Raman scattering of Rhodmine 6G from the NPs-on-diatom than the NPs-on-glass structure.
Background
Obesity and impaired exercise tolerance following heart transplantation increase the risk of post‐transplant morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of ...body mass index on markers of exercise capacity in pediatric heart transplant recipients and compare this effect with a healthy pediatric cohort.
Methods
A retrospective analysis of cardiopulmonary exercise test data between 2004 and 2022 was performed. All patients exercised on a treadmill using the Bruce protocol. Inclusion criteria included patients aged 6–21 years, history of heart transplantation (transplant cohort) or no cardiac diagnosis (control cohort) at the time of testing, and a maximal effort test. Patients were further stratified within these two cohorts as underweight, normal, overweight, and obese based on body mass index groups. Two‐way analyses of variance were performed with diagnosis and body mass index category as the independent variables.
Results
A total of 250 exercise tests following heart transplant and 1963 exercise tests of healthy patients were included. Heart transplant patients across all body mass index groups had higher resting heart rate and lower maximal heart rate, heart rate recovery at 1 min, exercise duration, and peak aerobic capacity (VO2peak). Heart transplant patients in the normal and overweight body mass index categories had higher VO2peak and exercise duration when compared to underweight and obese patients.
Conclusion
Underweight status and obesity are strongly associated with lower VO2peak and exercise duration in heart transplant patients. Normal and overweight heart transplant patients had the best markers of exercise capacity.
Pediatric heart transplant patients who are within normal and overweight BMI categories have the best markers of exercise capacity and have reduced fitness compared to peers without heart transplant.
