The aim of the study was to examine the associations of uric acid (UA) in blood and urine with subclinical renal damage (SRD) and its progression in a Chinese cohort.
1) 2342 participants from our ...previously established cohort who were followed up in 2017 were included. Cross-sectional analysis was used to examine the relationships between serum and urinary UA and the risk of SRD. 2) A total of 266 participants were recruited from the same cohort in 2013, and followed up in 2017. Longitudinal analysis was used to determine the relationships of serum and urinary UA with progression of SRD, which was defined as urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (uACR) progression or estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) decline.
In cross-sectional analysis, higher levels of uACR were associated with higher levels of serum uric acid (SUA) and urinary uric acid/creatinine ratio (uUA/Cre). Lower eGFR was associated with higher levels of SUA and fractional excretion of uric acid (FEUA) but lower uUA/Cre levels in all subjects. In addition, the multivariate-adjusted odds ratios for SRD compared with non-SRD were 3.574 (2.255-5.664) for uUA/Cre. Increasing uUA/Cre levels were associated with higher risk of SRD. In longitudinal analysis, 4-year changes of uUA/Cre and SUA were significantly associated with eGFR decline.
This study suggested that urinary UA excretion was significantly associated with the risk of SRD in Chinese adults. Furthermore, 4-year changes of serum and urinary UA were associated with SRD progression. These findings suggest that UA, especially urinary UA, may be used as a simple, noninvasive marker for early detection of decreased renal function in otherwise healthy subjects.

In this work, we propose that lanthanide cations (such as Eu3+ and Tb3+)-doped long-afterglow coordination polymers (CPs) can be an effective tool for designing multimode optical logic gates based on ...their tunable fluorescence/phosphorescence transformation and state-dependent emission. First, multicolor and white-light luminescence across the blue/green/yellow/red visible regions can be obtained by balancing the co-doping ratio of Eu3+/Tb3+ cations and suitable excitations. Additionally, a new tribochromic Eu-Cd-CP was developed based on the mechanism of a change in structural symmetry. Benefitting from long-afterglow, tribochromism, and excitation-dependent emission on the same luminescent CP, a new three-input and three-output logic gate was obtained. Therefore, this work not only provides detailed insights into the interesting fields of tribochromism and tunable photoemission, but also confirms that long-afterglow CPs can serve as a new platform for the construction of smart luminescent systems and multimode optical logic gates.
Improving the green total-factor productivity (GTFP) is a key measure to coordinate industrial development and environmental protection in China. This study adopts the biennial Malmquist–Luenberger ...(BML) productivity index to estimate the GTFP change of China's 34 industrial subsectors covering the period 2005–2015. Subsequently, fixed-effect panel quantile regression is applied to analyze the heterogeneous effects of eight selected influencing factors on China's industrial GTFP change. The results show that China's overall industrial GTFP exhibited an increasing trend during the study period and varied greatly in different sub-sectors. Moreover, technological innovation rather than efficiency promotion was the main contributor to the improvement of industrial GTFP in China. The impact of the scale structure (SS) was significantly positive across the quantiles and maintained a slightly downward trend. The impact of the property rights structure (PTS) was significantly negative and showed an increasing trend across the quantiles. The impact of the energy intensity (EI) slightly increased and was significantly negative at most quantiles. The energy consumption structure (ECS) exhibited an increasing trend and had a significantly negative effect at the middle quantiles. Technological innovation (TI) exerted a significantly positive effect and displayed a downward trend across the quantiles, and it was the most important factor to drive industrial GTFP growth. The “pollution halo” hypothesis and the Porter hypothesis were both verified with a certain range from the analysis of foreign direct investment (FDI) and environmental regulation (ER), as well as the interaction between ER and TI. Our results stress the importance of the heterogeneous effects of these influencing factors on different quantile subsectors when formulating the related measures and policies.

Increasing plant density is an effective way to enhance maize yield, but often increases lodging rate and severity, significantly elevating the risk and cost of maize production. Therefore, lodging ...is a major factor restricting future increases in maize yield through high-density planting. This paper reviewed previous research on the relationships between maize lodging rate and plant morphology, mechanical strength of stalks, anatomical and biochemical characteristics of stalks, root characteristics, damage from pests and diseases, environmental factors, and genomic characteristics. The effects of planting density on these factors and explored possible ways to improve lodging resistance were also analyzed in this paper. The results provide a basis for future research on increasing maize lodging resistance under high-density planting conditions and can be used to develop maize cultivation practices and lodging-resistant maize cultivars.
Neural precursor cell expressed developmentally downregulated 4‐like (NEDD4L), a member of the E3 ubiquitin‐protein ligases, encoded by NEDD4L gene, was found to be involved in in salt sensitivity by ...regulating sodium reabsorption in salt‐sensitive rats. The authors aimed to explore the associations of NEDD4L genetic variants with salt sensitivity, blood pressure (BP) changes and hypertension incidence in Chinese adults. Participants from 124 families in Northern China in the Baoji Salt‐Sensitive Study Cohort in 2004, who received the chronic salt intake intervention, including a 7‐day low‐salt diet (3.0 g/day) and a 7‐day high‐salt diet (18 g/day), were analyzed. Besides, the development of hypertension over 14 years was evaluated. NEDD4L single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs74408486 was shown to be significantly associated with systolic BP (SBP), diastolic BP (DBP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) responses to low‐salt diet, while SNPs rs292449 and rs2288775 were significantly associated with pulse pressure (PP) response to high‐salt diet. In addition, SNP rs4149605, rs73450471, and rs482805 were significantly associated with the longitudinal changes in SBP, DBP, MAP, or PP at 14 years of follow‐up. SNP rs292449 was significantly associated with hypertension incidence over the 14‐year follow‐up. Finally, this gene‐based analysis found that NEDD4L was significantly associated with longitudinal BP changes and the incidence of hypertension over the 14‐year follow‐up. This study indicated that gene polymorphism in NEDD4L serve an important function in salt sensitivity, longitudinal BP change and development of hypertension in the Chinese population.
Cancer cells show constitutive upregulation of glycolysis, and the concentration of lactate thus produced correlates with prognosis. Here, we examined whether lactate concentration and lactate ...transporter expression are related to migration and invasion activity. We found that the expression of the monocarboxylate transporters MCT1 and MCT4, but not MCT5, in human lung cancer cell lines was significantly correlated with invasiveness. To clarify the effects of MCT1 and MCT4 expression on invasion, we performed migration and invasion assays after transfection with siRNA specific for MCT1 or MCT4. Knockdown of MCT1 or MCT4 did not influence cell migration but reduced invasion; this was also observed for knockdown of the lactate transporter‐associated protein basigin. We also demonstrated that both expression and activity of MMP9 and MMP2 were not correlated with invasion activity and not regulated by MCT1, MCT4 and basigin. Furthermore, the addition of lactate did not increase migration and invasion activity, but low concentration of 4,4′‐diisothiocyanatostilbene‐2,2′‐disulphonic acid (DIDS), a general anion channel blocker, as well as other MCT inhibitors quercetin and simvastatin, inhibited cell invasion without influencing migration activity and the cellular expression of MCT1 and MCT4. This is the first report suggesting that lactate transporters are involved in human cancer cell invasiveness. It has been reported that gut probiotics play a major role in the bidirectional communication between the gut and the brain. Probiotics may be essential to people with depression, which remains a ...global health challenge, as depression is a metabolic brain disorder. However, the efficacy of probiotics for depression is controversial. This study aimed to systematically review the existing evidence on the effect of probiotics-based interventions on depression. Randomized, controlled trials, identified through screening multiple databases and grey literature, were included in the meta-analysis. The meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager 5.3 software using a fixed-effects model. The meta-analysis showed that probiotics significantly decreased the depression scale score (MD (depressive disorder) = -0.30, 95% CI (-0.51--0.09), p = 0.005) in the subjects. Probiotics had an effect on both the healthy population (MD = -0.25, 95% CI (-0.47--0.03), p = 0.03) and patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) (MD = -0.73, 95% CI (-1.37--0.09), p = 0.03). Probiotics had an effect on the population aged under 60 (MD = -0.43, 95% CI (-0.72--0.13), p = 0.005), while it had no effect on people aged over 65 (MD = -0.18, 95% CI (-0.47-0.11), p = 0.22). This is the first systematic review and meta-analysis with the goal of determining the effect of probiotics on depression. We found that probiotics were associated with a significant reduction in depression, underscoring the need for additional research on this potential preventive strategy for depression.
Functional constipation (FC), a condition characterized by heterogeneous symptoms (infrequent bowel movements, hard stools, excessive straining, or a sense of incomplete evacuation), is prevalent ...over the world. It is a multifactorial disorder and can be categorized into four subgroups according to different pathological mechanisms: normal transit constipation (NTC), slow transit constipation (STC), defecatory disorders (DD), and mixed type. Recently, growing evidence from human and animals has pointed that there was a strong association between gut microbiota and FC based on the brain-gut-microbiome axis. Studies have reported that the main characteristics of gut microbiota in FC patients were the relative decrease of beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, the relative increase of potential pathogens, and the reduced species richness. Gut microbiota can modulate gut functions through the metabolites of bacterial fermentation, among which short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), secondary bile salts (BAs), and methane occupied more important positions and could trigger the release of gut hormones from enteroendocrine cells (EECs), such as 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), peptide YY (PYY), and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). Subsequently, these gut hormones can influence gut sensation, secretion, and motility, primarily through activating specific receptors distributed on smooth muscle cells, enteric neurons, and epithelial cells. However, research findings were inconsistent and even conflicting, which may be partially due to various confounding factors. Future studies should take the associated confounders into consideration and adopt multiomics research strategies to obtain more complete conclusions and to provide reliable theoretical support for exploring new therapeutic targets.

China has experienced the most serious habitat degradation, especially in fast-growing metropolis cities. Although increasing attentions have been brought to this issue, we still lack the understanding of the quantitative impacts of urbanization and landscape pattern on habitats. In this study, we used the “Integrated Valuation of Environmental Services and Trade-off” (InVEST) model to evaluate the habitat quality in Hangzhou city. We further employed spatial auto-correlation to analyze its spatiotemporal pattern variation characteristics. Finally, the ordinary least squares (OLS) and geographically weighted regression (GWR) models were used to explore the impacts of urbanization and landscape pattern change on habitat quality. The results show that the habitat quality index of Hangzhou decreased from 0.608 to 0.577 during 2004–2015, and these areas mainly located around the suburb decreased significantly. The spatial distribution of habitat quality showed significantly positive spatial auto-correlation, and the overall spatial auto-correlation degree of the habitat quality increased during this time. Rapid urbanization has significant negative effects on habitat quality in various areas, while the magnitude and direction of the impacts of landscape pattern on habitat quality differed in time and space. These results provide decision-making criteria for formulating differential urban development policies and landscape management measures for urban ecological sustainability.
