Two modified TiO2 nanofluids were developed, with either hydrophobic or hydrophilic properties. The hydrophobic TiO2 nanofluid, embedded in an organo-silyl salt, could be transformed into a ...hydrophilic TiO2 nanofluid by exchange of the chloride with an organo-sulphonate ion. Both modified TiO2 nanofluids exhibited high fluidity, thermal stability and photoactivity.
Dietary meats play a crucial role in human health. The objective of this survey was to determine the fatty acid content and omega-6/omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-6/n-3 PUFA) ratio of fresh ...red meat (beef and pork) from four cities (Shanghai, Nanjing, Yinchuan and Hohhot) in China. The results showed that the n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio from all the samples ranged from 6 to 23. The total n-6 PUFA concentrations ranged from 290.54 mg/100 g in beef from Nanjing to 1601.48 mg/100 g in pork from Hohhot, whereas the total concentrations of n-3 PUFA ranged from 46.34 mg/100 g in beef from Nanjing to 96.03 mg/100 g in pork from Nanjing. The results indicated that the n-6/n-3 ratio in the red meat from all four regions is unbalanced and is much higher than that (〈 5:1) rec- ommended by the WHO/FAO. The total amount of n-3 PUFA was far lower than the required daily dose. There- fore, potential solutions to increase the n-3 PUFA content in meat products or to provide alternative source of n-3 PUFA should be explored.

Superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) becomes an enabling and emerging technology for power system application. The increasing demand for conventional energy sources and the green house ...effect are driving societies toward the development of electric vehicles (EVs) and alternate energy sources. This paper aims at investigating the effects of SMES on the smart grid incorporated with EVs.
The adjuvant treatment for patients with isolated stromal invasion after radical hysterectomy and pelvic lymph node dissection (PLND) in FIGO stage IB1 and IIA1 cervical carcinoma has not been ...established. This study assessed the survival outcomes and recurrent patterns in this particular group of patients treated with chemotherapy or radiation-based adjuvant therapy.
The records 133 IB1 and IIA1 postoperative cervical carcinoma patients with histopathology-confirmed isolated deep stromal invasion (DSI) without any other unfavorable pathological finding between June 2010 and March 2013 were analyzed. Sixty-five patients received postoperative adjuvant four to six cycles of cisplatin-based chemotherapy (CT group) and Sixty-eight received postoperative received postoperative adjuvant radiotherapy (RT group). Treatment-related toxicities were evaluated and disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) were analyzed using Kaplan-Meier estimates and statistical significance was determined using the log-rank test.
With a median follow-up of 33.7 months (range 10-62 months), RT group had a significantly improved in DFS rate (P = 0.044), but there was no significant difference in overall survival (P = 0.437). Upon further analysis, patients with outer 1/3 to full-thickness invasion in chemotherapy group exhibited significantly higher recurrence rates compared to the radiotherapy group. Leukocytopenia, nausea and vomiting were the most frequent short-term complications of chemotherapy, whereas colitis/proctitis and cystitis were more frequent in the radiotherapy group (P = 0.000 respectively). No significant differences were found regards to other acute toxicities, including hemoglobin, platelets and ALT/AST, colitis/proctitis, cystitis and dermatitis (P = 0.000 respectively). Fewer late severe side effects in the chemotherapy group were observed compared with the radiation group and significant differences were found at colitis/proctitis, cystitis and dermatitis (P = 0.000 respectively).
Compared to chemotherapy alone, postoperative RT to FIGO stages IB1 and IIA1 cervical carcinoma patients with isolated DSI can reduce risk of recurrence and with acceptable morbidity.

By analyzing the characteristics of intellectual employees and the structural features of their psychological contracts, this article puts forward the necessity of utilizing psychological contract as ...a means of motivation. Managers should focus on the psychological contract, and adopt a dynamic motivation system on the basis of the harmonious psychological contracts. Moreover, this article also sets up a comprehensive motivation model with the same base, and the proposal to establish commitment-focused incentives. If the psychological contract between employees and their employers can be kept, consolidated, revised and developed all the time, the various motivation methods can be effectively integrated, and employees' innovation ability will be virtually stimulated.
Background: It is important to achieve the definitive pathogen identification in hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP), but the traditional culture results always delay the target antibiotic therapy. We ...assessed the method called quantitative loop-mediated isothermal amplification (qLAMP) as a new implement for steering of the antibiotic decision-making in HAP. Methods: Totally, 76 respiratory tract aspiration samples were prospectively collected from 60 HAP patients. DNA was isolated from these samples. Specific DNA fragments for identifying 11 pneumonia-related bacteria were amplified by qLAMP assay. Culture results of these patients were compared with the qLAMP results. Clinical data and treatment strategies were analyzed to evaluate the effects of qLAMP results on clinical data. McNemar test and Fisher's exact test were used for statistical analysis. Results: The detection of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumonia, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Streptococcus pneumonia, and Acinetobacter baumannii by qLAMP was consistent with sputum culture (P 〉 0.05). The qLAMP results of 4 samples for Haemophilus influenzae, Legionella pneumophila, or Mvcoplasma pneumonia (MP) were inconsistent with culture results; however, clinical data revealed that the qLAMP results were all reliable except 1 MP positive sample due to the lack of specific species identified in the final diagnosis. The improvement of clinical condition was more significant (P 〈 0.001) in patients with pathogen target-driven therapy based on qLAMP results than those with empirical therapy. Conclusion: qLAMP is a more promising method for detection of pathogens in an early, rapid, sensitive, and specific manner than culture.
Spin-excited states in an asymmetric magnetic organic co-oligomer diode are investigated theoretically. The results demonstrate that the structural asymmetry of the co-oligomer is modulated by the ...spin-excited states, which is embodied in the wave functions of the eigenstates as well as the spin density wave. By calculating the transport property, a robust spin-current rectification concomitant with a charge-current rectification is observed in all spin-excited states. However, the current through the diode is suppressed distinctly by the spin-excited states, while the rectification ratios may be reduced or enhanced depending on the bias and the excited spins. The intrinsic mechanism is analyzed from the spin-dependent trans- mission combined with the change of molecular eigenstates under bias. Finally, the temperature-induced spin excitation is simulated. Significant rectification behavior is obtained even at room temperature.
Magnetic fluid hyperthermia(MFH) promises to be a viable alternative in the treatment of localized cancerous tumors. The treatment consists of introducing nanoparticles as energy absorbent agents in ...tumor tissue under an oscillating magnetic field, where nanoparticles dissipate energy in the form of heat, causing a localized rise in the temperature and tumor cell death.Traditional magnetic fluid under study is artificial magnetic nanoparticles. This work seeks to introduce the new natural biologic magnetic material bacterial magnetosomes(BMs) to be used in MFH.Properties of magnetosomes and chemically synthesized magnetic nanoparticles(MNPs),such as morphology, magnetic properties and their heating effects under magnetic field were compared.Cytotoxicity studies using human breast cancer cells MCF-7 indicated that cell viability could be significantly decreased by the heat derived from BMs and MNPs under alternative magnetic field.Biocompatibility of BMs and MNPs was compared in terms of evaluating their acute toxicity in mice and their decomposition abilities in vitro, and it showed that magnetosomes exhibit a lower toxicity. These findings provide evidence for beneficial activities of magnetosomes in MFH and support the continued investigation of it to be applied in biomedicine.
Results from the third nationwide cluster sampling survey on the epidemiology of schistosomiasis in the People's Republic of China, conducted by the Ministry of Health in 2004, are presented. A ...stratified cluster random sampling technique was used, and 239 villages were selected in 7 provinces where Schistosoma japonicum remains endemic. A total of 250,987 residents 6-65 years of age were included in the survey. Estimated prevalence rates in the provinces of Hunan, Hubei, Jiangxi, Anhui, Yunnan, Sichuan, and Jiangsu were 4.2%, 3.8%, 3.1%, 2.2%, 1.7%, 0.9%, and 0.3%, respectively. The highest prevalence rates were in the lake and marshland region (3.8%) and the lowest rates were in the plain region with waterway networks (0.06%). Extrapolation to all residents in schistosome-endemic areas indicated 726,112 infections. This indicates a reduction of 16.1% compared with a nationwide survey conducted in 1995. However, human infection rates increased by 3.9% in settings where transmission is ongoing.
